    came across this film today.

what a score (I can't believe I sat through a good chunk of that film just to hear the music)!

What is the release info on this score?

JJ, it's one of those Bay Cities discs that didn't see the light of day for very long. Great score, fun film (childhood favorite). Unfortunately it's way out of print (as I'm sure you know). Catch me on AIM and I'll see about getting you a copy.

Great score, although the 45min. Bay Cities cd samples the 90 odd min. score.

I never could understand why so many people hate this film...it's a nice fantasy overall, and if you don't compare it to WIZARD, it's a very good film.

Shire retooled the album so it plays like a concert work, but there are some nice things missing. Jeffrey Wheeler wrote a great story about this in FSM way back in '94,worth checking out.

Don't expect a reissue though....since the film is almost universally despised, this wonderful score seems to be forgotten as well. It's a miracle Anchor Bay was able to put out a DVD!

    Best,
    Sean

PS....If anyone wants a CDR of this, email me and I'll try to make one for ya!

I think RETURN TO OZ is a VERY fine movie, actually truer to the world of L. Frank Baum than the original WIZARD is (not that WIZARD isn't a great movie too). As for David Shire's score, it's one of the best of the 1980s (it was certainly my pick for best of 1985).

I didn't know people DID hate this film. I think it's glorious, as is the score.
I'm fairly sure that Amazon stocks this CD. Maybe Im thinking of the DVD. Though I've seen the CD for online purchase somewhere.

Personally, (and as much as I love the original movie) I love "Return to Oz".
It's so dark. As a child, Mombi and the wheelies (or was it wheelers?) scared me out of my mind. I've been searching for a copy of this in Australia (Oz...get it? ha!) to watch it again but no one has it.

    *sniff*

this is about the only childhood film I saw that I don't have a certain fondness for.

not like The Goonies or even Back to the Future.

hunting the CD...sound the horn! release the hounds!
