I did a little on-line shopping tonight and would like to get some feedback about the stuff I ordered

    Thunderheart - James Horner

I saw this movie a long time ago and don't really remember much, but at the consistant pestering of someone on my IM, I finally decided to give it a try, what did you guys think? Can I expect something original from Horner?(why am I even asking that? --although deep down I hope to be pleasantly suprised )

    In Dreams - Elliot Goldenthal

When I learned that Elliot Goldenthal was going to be scoring the upcoming movie Final Fantasy I made a mad dash to track down everything I could find by him -- and you know what? I have yet to be dissapointed, hopefully this one won't

    Ever After - George Fenton

I just bought my first George Fenton score recently Dangerous Beauty and was literly blown away, it's a really beautiful score! Follwed that up with Anna and the King and again was not dissapointed, 'The Execution' is probally one of the best cues I've ever heard from Fenton(in the limited experience of those two scores of course ) So how is Ever After?

    Thanks in advance

NP: Out of Africa - John Barry (which is slowly putting me to sleep)

Thunderheart is primarily synth....good themes, a couple great action pieces and fairly original at the time.

In Dreams and Ever After...haven't left much of an impression.

"In Dreams" is a rough Goldenthal suspense score. Either you'll like it, not care for it but have it grow on you, or completely hate it and slap yourself in the head for buying it.

Either way, the pay-off is the last track on the album. "Dream Baby" is a haunting song written by Goldenthal with lyrics by director Jordan. The vocals basically sound like a small ethereal choir. Plus a guitar and drums make it into the mix. It's great.

Ever After is fantastic. I love the movie, and every time I see it I hear only the music. Beautiful themes.

Ever After is a fantastic score, with nice little brass fanfares and a fairy tale like quality (fancy that, in a Cinderella story no less). It was written more or less the same time as the superior Dangerous Beauty in 1998, a great year for Fenton.
Check out his other score from that year, called The Woodlanders.

In Dreams is really appreciated if you are familiar with Goldenthal and/or contemporary classical music. It does suffer from some Horner-type re-uses, but overall it a fantastically powerful score. Especially so in the movie, which is undoubtedly weird.

    NP -- nothing

Thunderheart might be my second favorite James Horner (with Apollo 13 being the first). It's more original than most other things he's done, and in a style far from any of his other scores. I really love the score, but I admit it's probably better if you're at least familliar with the film (I own it).
Note: Run For The Stronghold is the most original Horner action track I've yet heard.

NP: The Caveman's Valentine, Blanchard *****

when you say it was 'original at the time' does that mean Horner has used it in his later scores? where might I have heard it?

I suppose I misspoke...upon further consideration this is a score by Horner that he has not borrowed from...there might be some vague similarities...but vague at best.
