I just watched an excellent 90 minute documentary about Erich Wolfang Korngold on TV. Large parts of it were dedicated solely to his music, much of which obviously had been especially newly recorded - also visually - for the program. It's always great to see the musicians perform the music, and the sound quality was excellent (hard to believe it was just TV). Most of the film music parts were the original recordings (often accompanied by the original movie visuals), but the major part of the concert and opera music was represented by the new recordings, including some of Korngold's very first works and even a piano performance of sketches from his final, unfinished symphony. Among the interviewees were also John Morgan and William Stromberg. The end credits revealed that the documentary was produced by the European arte channel. I've never seen it broadcast on arte though, and I couldn't find anything about it on their website either, so it looks like they haven't yet broadcast it. German and French film music fans: watch out!

Sounds like some great stuff. Way too good for American television.E.W. definitely knew how to compose film music.

Lucky you Marian - I would love to have seen that. I love Korngold - in the 'seventies when I was just a kid, that wonderful Gerhardt album almost singlehandedly got me into film music. His classical stuff is truly spellbinding also - it's unbelievable to think that some of those works were written by a child! Pure genius obviously.
I am currently reading Brendan Carroll's splendid biography of Korngold "The Last Prodigy" -fascinating stuff. And I just cannot get enough of this man's music - totally intoxicating, shamelessly romantic and dreamy gorgeousness! The stuff that our most wonderful dreams are made of.Best,
