Ok, ok, so Horner-bashing can be real fun, and many of his scores can be played back to back without noticing the difference - but at the end of the day Mr. Horner has come up with quite a few emorable themes over the past 20 years or so.

Which would you consider to be Horner's best theme?
Whether this means most beautiful, most whistlable, most fitting etc. is up to you.

Out of the dozens I've heard I'd have to choose the 'Freedom' theme from Braveheart, which appears in 2 tracks, most notably the finale - and which to my knowledge is not ripped-off in any other score of his

    The floor is yours.

Willow's Theme, Spock's Theme, and the main theme from Glory spring to mind.

More recently, I agree with you on "Freedom" from Braveneart, "Rose" from Titanic, and then theme from Bicentennial Man.

These are all good ones. Of those not yet mentioned, I find the main and love themes from KRULL particularly evocative, as well as the "Hymn" from COURAGE UNDER FIRE. And for once I chose not to pounce on Horner for borrowing from himself: the lovely ONCE AROUND is mostly based on the gorgeous opening track from LAND BEFORE TIME, but so differently and persuasively arranged that I was actually GLAD he'd come back to that motif.

Sneakers is great, I'd pick the "possibilities" theme, for lack of a better description. It's the one that plays prominently when Redford meets Kingsley again for the first time, and later during the final confrontation on the roof. Has a certain "space"-kind of sound.

Damn, I still don't have that score!

There is quite a few good ones and picking a favorite is like picking a favorite child, it just doesn't happen

A few of mine would be,

    Theme from Cocoon - Cocoon
Michael's Gift to Karen - Brainstorm
For Love of a Princess - Braveheart
The Wedding - Legends of the Fall
    Preperations for Battle - Glory
    Casper's Lullaby - Casper
Diego's Goodbye - The Mask of Zorro

to name a few granted these are the tracknames and not the actuall theme but you get the idea

    NP: Mulan - Jerry Goldsmith

    Re: "Which One?"

Probably the main theme, but it's the only Horner score, along with Field of Dreams, that I absolutely love 100% so I'd go as far as saying any cue!

Is the "space" reference and in joke? Because Horner re-used parts of that VERY Sneakers cue in Apollo 13. I agree it's a great cue, especially it reaches that haunting "I may even be able to crash the whole damn system" line...

I didn't even know about the Apollo re-use, I'm not very familiar with that score. Thor and I had a little discussion over at the FSM board about what I called the "space sound", something like that Sneakers motif. I find the "space sound" to be among the most inspiring music, it can also be heard at the beginning of Richard Strauss' Aus Italien, and I'm quite sure Philip Glass has it in the opening music for A Brief History of Time, but of course that score has never been released on CD.

"The place where dreams come true- Field of Dreams"

This has always been one of my favorites, too, but a recent revelation qualifies it all. A portion of the music in this cue--specifically underscoring the moment Terry (James Earl Jones, Jr.) grins at the Kinsella family before journeying into the cornfield; and a variation of it in the cue entitled "Doc's Memories", specifically underscoring the moments earlier when young Moonlight Graham (Frank Whaley) turns into Doc Graham (Burt Lancaster)--is lifted from Copland's score to Our Town (1940). The crib makes sense in that both films and the works they're adapted from could be characterized as "pure Americana". Anyway, the music has been cited in a recent FSM hard copy article as the secondary Grovers Corner Theme, the actual notes having been included in an illustration for Mark Leneker's article. You may find to your own dismay as I did that the music (in the exact Dreams Come True incarnation) occurs in Our Town's early scene introducing both Mrs. Gibbs (Fay Bainter) and Mrs. Webb (Beulah Bondi).

cool choices. out of all of my soundtracks he takes the lead with an abundant sum of 7. Apollo 13 is unfortunately on a cassette, and almost ruined. ok, now here are my picks.

    1. Main Title: An American Tail
    2. Zorro's Theme/The Plaza of Execution/The Ride/Elena: The Mask of Zorro
    3. Main Title: Apollo 13
    4. Rose: Titanic
    5. Freedom/Sons of Scotland/Warrior Poets/The Proposal: Braveheart

after reading reviews of The Perfect Storm and hearing samples of things it was compared to, I am kind of sorry I bought it lol

It's no Schumann symphony, at least. Sounds like "true" Horner to me, like Wrath of Khan - the two scores are very similar, but not too similar.
