I got a few presents recently:

GIL MELLE: THE COMPLETE 50s BLUE NOTE SESSIONS (2 CDs): Not film music, but an absolute must-have for those interested in all things Mellesque, like me. Pure jazz, with nary a hint as to what he would later do in films.

GATTACA (Michael Nyman): I am in no way a fan of minimalism, so I was pleasantly taken by this. Only a minimal hint of minimalistic minimalism in this one, in fact it seems to me to be more like an un-gushy John Barry than anything else. It keeps its distance, but it ends up very poignant indeed by keeping its emotions at arms length. I made up a really good film in my head to this, probably everything Gattaca the film wasn't.

    In the mail today...

Pay it Forward - Thomas Newman

Basically, this is yet another American Beauty and Erin Brockovich score. Being a fan of that style, it is good and there is enough variety in comparison to the others to make it a nice listen. That said, it is bit too much like the others in places. Hopefully, T. Newman will try something else for his next score. As good as this is, it is getting used by him too much in his compositions!

    Diablo (PC game)

Haven't played enough to decide one way or another, but I like it so far.

NP: El Cid (Miklos Rozsa) - I just can't seem to get enough of this, I have listened to this probably 20 times since getting it. Sure, I am reviewing it, but it is still great. Highly recommended! *****

    Regards,
    Sean Robert Abbey

Good Ol' John Dunham Replied to Me:

    quote:
    No good reason.
I've never seen Ben Hur, never heard any clips, etc., so I quite literally don't know what I'm missing. As a result, it doesn't get any sort of high priority.
MovieMusic has it for $30. I guess I ought to pick it up... maybe...

whoa man. I consider this to be my favorite film score of all time. $30 is about right. What a great packaging it comes in too. Informative notes about the score, the production of the movie, stills...man.

Big epic main theme, the original "Flag Parade," bad ass action music.

It will not do anything for my long-term health for a so-called film score collector to do without Ben-Hur in any way shape or form.

get it! (when you can afford it!)

NP -- Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Herrmann

Couldn't find the original Captain Blood recording, but:

    • the album of the trailer of the film of monty python and the holy grail - executive version
    • Anton Bruckner: Symphony #4 (Münchner Philharmoniker, Sergiu Celibidache)
    • Anton Bruckner: Te Deum / Motets / Psalm 150 (Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin, Berlin Philharmonic, Eugen Jochum) - I already have a CDR copy of an older release these recordings, but this one is on Deutsche Grammophon's "Originals" series, so I'm hoping for improved sound quality (the old one didn't sound very good). If not, at least I have the lyrics now.

As it so happens, I have some money now and I was gonna order from Moviemusic again anyhow. So I guess I'll add Ben Hur on and place my order in a day or two.

    Bird On A Wire, Zimmer
    Speed 2/Bad Boys, Mancina

    NP: The Jackal, Burwell

    New as of today...

The Mummy Returns - Alan Silvestri

I must say, while I was disappointed upon hearing that Goldsmith would not be returning to do the score. I was looking forward to the music nevertheless. Hearing the samples online, I was interested even further, but still did not think Goldsmith's could be beat.

That said, now that I have heard the entire 70 minute score, I think the samples did the score an injustice. Making them sound hardly as good as they actually are. In fact, this may very well be better than the original. As for what it is like. Just think of a cross between Judge Dredd, Predator and the ethnicity and feeling of Goldsmith's.

NP: The Mummy Returns (Alan Silvestri) ****1/2

Yeah, it is fantastic. If you like the work of Alan Silvestri and the ethnicity of the original, then this should be a welcome addition to your collection.

The only problem I find with the album is the inclusion of a song. Personally, I liked it a lot. It just is totally off-putting within the context of the rest. The song is rather modern pop, with synth elements. Not only does it clash against the previous 70 minutes of score, but I can see it doing even more so to hurt the ending of the film as well.

In any case, it is easy to bypass if needed. I guess my main gripe, is there is no end credit suite this time around!

    Sean Robert Abbey
