Check it out gang. On the FLIM-FLAM MAN/A GIRL NAMED SOONER CD FSM RELEASE go to Track 24 Titled: Becoming a family/Jumping rope. Right at 14 seconds into the cue thru 21 seconds it’s THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW THEME orchestrally instead of the whistle. It’s quick but it’s there. Is this Goldsmith’s Tribute to smalltown Bucolic Mayberry and Excellent Maestro Earle Hagen? Hagen’s old Andy Griffith Scores are truly wonderful and very much like great film scoring. Okay Now get out your BITE THE BULLET ALEX NORTH Prometheus Release. Go to Track 5 titled: Miss Jones. Right at 57 seconds Thru 1:05 seconds You can hear it. Did Alex North actually write the STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE MARCH? It is definitely “it” played very lazy and slow. Now don’t get me wrong. I love Jerry Goldsmith’s Music and believe he is simply an Awesome Composer. I also know that he and Alex North were best friends and North a very strong influence on him. I guess these are Goldsmith’s Homage’s to two of his fellow composer inspirations or did Jerry just watch too many Episodes of Andy with Barney Fife, Gomer, Goober and Opie. And was Jerry Biting the Bullet when he thought of STAR TREK. You make the call…I have more of these for the future. Does anyone else have examples of this stuff?? I find it most interesting and fun. I can't believe no one has answered you, Piero. To my mind, there is indeed a huge debt to Alex North in much of Jerry Goldsmith's earlier wirks. In fact, when I was young and knew zero, I caught a bit of Cleopatra on TV and thought it WAS Jerry (all those growling rhythms. I think Cleo was coming up the river in that bit). And listen to Moon Music from Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf: Goldsmith's opening sighs in Chinatown are very similar. They were great friends, Alex and Jerry. Can't comment on your Earle Hagen thingy. Sorry!I hope I've opened this post up!

I don't have ANY of the specific CDs with on hand here in the wasteland that is Nevada, but I can certainly tell that as I listen more and more to Goldsmith and North, the musical influences are certainly there, and it continues to this day. For some reason, I hear Alex North in such scores as Air Force One. Nothing deliberatly lifted or anything. Music theory wise, North was as smart as you get, and you can tell in his music. And since they were such good friends, I am not surprised at hearing a bit of North in Goldsmith's music (kinda like in ET, you see a Yoda puppet.)probably not the most coherent post, but deal with it. ;-)

This isn't quite the same, I grant, but while listening to Cleopatra for the second time, I'm convinced I did hear North enage in an amusing musical in-joke of sorts when Richard Burton makes his first appearance. It comes to an end with a three note fanfare that sounds exactly like the title song of a Broadway musical Burton had just departed to do the movie (Camelot).My favorite composer's in-joke in a score though, was when Rozsa in "King Of Kings" decided to write in a particular style he hated for the cue involving Satan.
