I went out on a limb today and bought Morricone's VATEL. I haven't seen the movie or heard any music from it. However, I'm very glad that I made the decision and bought it. What a spectacular score! There's some great Baroque imitations by Ennio. I particularly like the tracks that stay closer to in-practice compositional techniques and only borrow from the Baroque era. (tracks like "Kaleidoscope" or "Symphonie Avec Voix" - a track I like so much I have it on repeat right now.) It reminds me a bit of JNH's Restoration. JNH imitates the music of Henry Purcell whereas Morricone imitates French masters like Rameau.

I enjoy Malena quite a bit, don't care for M2M, and haven't heard Canone Inverso. I'm wondering why Malena and not Vatel was nominated for the Oscar? Does it have something to do with one film's success over the other? It seems to me that Vatel is definitely the better film score. Of course it wouldn't have had a chance against Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger, but technically speaking it's definitely as accomplished as that score...

Any thoughts, opinions? (especially from people who aren't utterly and completely obsessed with the man- even though I have no problems with you all expressing your love.)

For my opinion, read my review of this in the database. It's a great score, and you must check out Canone Inverso, probably the most passionate of Morricone's 2000 scores. (Though M2M remains my fave.)

    I definilty agree.

    VATEL is pure Morricone vintage.
And yes, it's better than MALENA, but I still need to see both movies to check how the score works with it.

MISSION TO MARS still is my favorite at the time.

    Cheers!!

I LOVED Canone Inverso -- the violin solos and duets are exceptional.
