Oscar, we all hate him yet we all want him...for ourselves in the future or for THOSE DESERVING. In this case, Julia won even though Ellen and Lura Linney were FAR better and FAR more deserving. CTHD deserved to win and did thankfully. Gladiator was not the best picture yet it won for it? Traffic was a great ballsy ambitious and politically smart film that was fresh and deserved all praise it was up for. It won direction(Which it deserved and won!) acting, screenplay, etc...yet no best picture? Del Toro was great but Dafoe was amazing. Crowe was Crowe, this MAKE UP FOR LAST YEAR crap makes me sick. WHOEVER IS DESERVING SHOULD WIN...but no...this does not happen. I guess I should get used to it right? Ed Harris was amazing, Crowe was just choppng of heads. All in all I still hate the Oscars and Y.C.C.O.M. SHOULD HAVE WON FOR ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY! AHH!

Yeah, I was angry about their Best Actor pick as well. I haven't seen Pollock, though. I was pulling for Tom Hanks. I know that he's Hollywood's Golden Boy and that people want to seem him fail miserably. But, for once, I think he really deserved to win. The amount he put on and then took off for that role is astounding. Most people can't lose even 10 lbs. in 6-8 months time. (Although it could be argued the Crowe also lost a lot of weight going from The Insider to Gladiator) Still, Hanks carried Cast Away on his shoulders. I think any man could've filled Crowe's sandals in Gladiator- even someone as inept as Ben Affleck... Crying and blowing snot all over your face doesn't always equate an Oscar-worthy performance...
And if anything, the ceremony itself showed who the better actor was. Hanks reaction was hilarious when Steve Martin made the joke about him planning to kidnap Crowe. Russell's typical tough-guy/arrogant prick reactions to Martin's pot-shots were stupid.

The neverending debate on the Oscars selecting the least deserving to win year after year.

This is getting boring....

Well, thanks for enlightening us with your comments- they're definitely NOT boring...

And shame on us for talking about the Oscars the day after they aired!! And having opinions about it too... What the heck was I thinking?

If anything I felt Director and Picture should have been reversed...I am glad that Gladiator won, it pulled off so many of the facets that go into film production, and pulled them off well.

Traffic felt like a twisted afterschool special. It was "ballsy and ambitious" but as far as the art of directing goes, I feel Scott did a better job.

Oh well...at least all three (Tiger, Gladiator, Traffic) all came away with a handful of awars so we can all be happy.

Except for an unmitigated robbery in the Visual FX category (they made scenery appear; B.F.D. Damn Stonecutters), last night's ceremony was quite enjoyable. Steve Martin was great as the host; he really should do it more often, and, most important of all, it was short (roughly 3 and 1/4 hours)...well, shorter than expected.

William Goldman said, in an edition of Premiere a few years back, that as far as the Best Actor/Actress vote goes, he doesn't vote for "drunks or retards"....because actors love to do that "stumbling around" stuff--anyone can play drunk.

I don't necessarily subscribe to that view, but considering who he is, and the fact that he's saying it--I can see his point.

Well, I for one had no problem with Russel Crowe winning for Gladiator, and I'm quite happy that Ta Dun won for best original score. The Academy has picked the right score to win.

MALENA would have been my pick, but I've got nothing against Dun winning for CROUCHING TIGER. It's a good score that worked well in the film.

But I ponder... which concert composer will win next year...
