O.K. As you all know over here in the U.K. we're about 6 months behind you with DVD releases etc ( and I'm usually 6 months behing everyone in the U.K.!!
) Anyway, tomorrow is my birthday and I've got a bit of money to splash out with...Yippee!!! I've got my eye on one, maybe two DVD's out on release here tomorrow. Dont forget DVDs over here are £20 (about $30??)...what a con eh? Welcome to the economic island prison we call the U.K. Anyway, the ones I'm looking at are Hollow Man, Tommorrow Never Dies or Dinosaur.
Here's my thoughts on each one...further info and advise would be appreciated thanks!1)Hollow Man....Haven't seen the movie or heard the music but would buy it just for Goldsmith's commentary/isolated score. I've heard mixed reports about the movie but I reckon this I will buy!
2)Tomorrow Never Dies....Not one of my favourite Bond movies but it does contain an Arnold interview plus isolated score. I've got the soundtrack CD release with about 50 mins, but does the extra music justify spending £20 on? I got the impression Arnold was'nt that happy with the score overall.
3)Dinosaur...Haven't seen this at all but I love great effects + dinosaur movies in general and theres loads of extras on the DVD. It says on the extra features there are "music compositions?" Are these isolated samples from the score or just menu music? Also, I've heard that Dinosaur is a bit "cheesy" and geared more at children. Bear in mind I'm 36 tomorrow. Which one (maybe two) should I go for? Thanks for any advice/info. Gae Zulu(and other themes)

DINOSAUR disappointed me. Basically a CGI version of THE LAND BEFORE TIME, although technically a better movie.TND: don't care personally.
HOLLOW MAN: didn't much like the movie, it was far tamer than I hoped, but WILL eventually buy it because of the Goldsmith commentary. Although he is far more articulate as a musician than as a speaker. Still, I'm a Goldsmith completist, so this is a keeper.

I'm one of those who rate the Hollow Man score very highly, and also don't find the movie all that bad. Sure, a no-brainer, but better than all the other no-brainers we have to watch these days. It certainly had be at the edge of my seat during the finale.Add to that the iso score and Goldsmith commentary, and you won't be surprised that I've ordered the DVD myself (but it hasn't shipped yet). I'm not sure though if the European release will have the iso score, and even if it does, I guess it will play 4% faster due to PAL speedup.

Hollow Man and Dinosaur were easily the two biggest disappointments for me last year. HRocco, I'd agree with you when you say that it's a "Land Before Time" remake in CG, however I disagree when you say it's technically better... In my opinion, "The Land Before Time" is far superior. Given the subject matter and director, "Hollow Man" had endless possibilities. It started off fine, but the last 45 minutes may have been the worst 45 minutes of film last year... I also wasn't too fond of Goldsmith's score, however Newton-Howard's score for "Dinosaur" is one of the better last year. Haven't seen "Tomorrow Never Dies", but Arnold's score is solid... far from his best, though... Anyway, my 2 cents!NP: South Park: BL&U (Shaiman) ***/*****

Hollow Man: dumb fun, but even if you don't like it, the DVD is packed to the gills with extras, including Goldsmith's commentary (worth the price of the disc five times over) and his excellent score. Other highlights include several featurettes on the making of the film (okay, on the making of a hollow man, mostly, but still very interesting) and an entertaining commentary track.Dinosaur: like any other Disney DVD SE, this is just crammed with stuff. Everything you could want is on here, with one notable exception: an isolated score. Attention Disney: [b]nobody[b] watches the film with just sound effects! Give us iso scores tracks instead!
The set is still good, but NOT if you're one of the film's detractors (and it has a great many, more than it deserves). Oh, and hearing JNH talk about scoring in a couple places during the second commentary is fun, too.TND: No comment, don't own it.

DO NOT GET ANY OF THOSE FILMS! All three are trash and should be thrown in the trash. The films stink, the scores are mediocre due to the horrible films...hint, do not get them...waste of $$$! I felt ripped off just for renting those three films, DO NOT BUY THEM!Who would buy those films for any reason! They are boring, unoriginal, and paniful to watch. To get them just for the commentary is a waste unless the film is decent. Get better films. Trust me.

Thanks for the replies but I think I'm even more confused now than I was at the start
Kross...Are you a fan of Goldsmiths? I'd have thought that the DVD of "Hollow Man" was worth it just for the isolated score and commentary? Anyway, this is my decision. I love Sci-Fi/horror and most of Goldsmith's scores and I'm even a fan of Kevin Bacon (esp Tremors, River Wild) and you know, I quite often enjoy the odd "dumb-ass" movie if its got great visuals and music. I mean I think "Starship Troopers" is great but I know a load of people who think it SUCKS big time. So my decision is.....(drum roll!!!)...DINOSAUR!!...no, just kidding
HOLLOW MAN of course! Anyway, it makes a refreshing change to find a Fantasy movie these days as opposed to the plethora of Crime/Drugs/Teen flicks movies that are around at the moment! Thanks again! Gae

Starship Troopers is great. A great fun over the top in every way film. I loved it! Great music as well! All the films you are wanting to get are not even on par with Starship Troopers. Out of the three, none of them are worth buying in my eyes. For looks go with Hollow Man, even though I hated it.

Gae, the Hollow Man DVD is worth it just for the iso and Jerry's commentary. Regardless of what Kross thinks of the film, the iso score mixed in 5.1 is to die for.Jeron
PS - And Kross, before you jump all over me, I think Hollow Man was a mediocre film at best.

I've never seen "Hollow Man," but I just bought the DVD for the iso score/commentary. I watched a few sequences, and the effect is fantastic! I'm thinking of watching the movie for the first time with only the iso score and Jerry. If what I've read is correct, absence of dialogue will probably make the movie better. Can anyone confirm this?

LOL Wedge. Once again I have to defend Hollow Man. Sure, it doesn't have much of a script in the second half, but neither has Alien. Now I'm not trying to elevate it to the same level, but I think Hollow Man has substance enough to build up the tension that makes the second half work. For a pure popcorn movie, I consider it a success, and not nearly as annoying like any Bruckheimer action film I've seen.

Jerry obviously despise the movie, as anyone can notice while he keeps saying that how he still try to find something to satisfy him as an artist even with such movies.

Well I bought "The Hollow Man" DVD and I made the right choice. Its great and I haven't even watched the movie yet. I'm talking about the isolated score and Goldsmith's commentary. For the first time I can actually hear the great man talking in depth about his score. I think he comes over as a very down to earth kinda guy who just also happens to be a skilled craftsman/great composer. He does sound a bit nervous in my opinion being in this situation of expressing himself through words instead of music. The most interesting aspect was the times he said how difficult it actually is to talk about music and to convey in words the actual "affect" it has etc. Great feature...worth the price alone. I might even get around to watching the movie sometime too!!

Don't buy TOMORROW NEVER DIES !!!!!!!1) The movie sucks
2) The isolated score is presented like it is in the movie, that means that it goes from loud to quiet if it's to underscore dialogue, it fades in and out when you don't want it to.
Be sure not to buy it for the score if you already have the expanded CD.posted 03-31-2001 12:08 AM PT (US)

Hmmm... I think Tomorrow Never Dies is a great movie. Spottiswood, Brosnan, and Arnold are tops. The storyline was fun. Oh, and let's not forget Terry Hatcher... wow. Michelle Yeow is great, too!!Jeron

I recommend all three. While silly at times they are just movies and that's all they were meant to be.
