And pretty good news, too.The director Shusuke Kaneko, who has cowritten and directed the last three excellent GAMERA films, has been hired to make the next GODZILLA film, due in December 2001.
His usual composer, Ko Otani, who did such a fine job on the GAMERAs, will also do the new GODZILLA.

Yes, the G fans are really looking forward to this saying that the 2 Gamera films made after Gamera Guardian of the Universe (a thumbs up film by Roger Ebert) that weren't shown in the US were even better than this one.Larry's Godzilla music site lists a new Ifukube CD with remastered re-mixed cues from Kaiju films. No new cues but better sound supposedly.

The new Godzilla looks a little like the version from 1954, smaller dorsal fins. Also looks a little more like a dinosaur. I'm curious to see if they re-design Ghidorah, Mothra and Baragon. I can't wait hopefully this will be done well.

Rocco: is this the same Otani that wrote the music for "Darkstalkers" and "Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness?"

Yeppers. I haven't heard those, however. His score for the first new-series GAMERA (1995) bore some distinct Williams/Goldsmith resemblances, but he deployed the music perfectly. (The opening and closing are a bit too much like JURASSIC PARK for comfort, but are still perfect for the scenes. I also wondered, here and there, if the picture hadn't been temped with STARGATE.)I genuinely hope that this time they will NOT use Akira Ifukube's Godzilla theme ... I'd rather they hire him outright than just shoehorn his theme into the movie at certain moments, messing with whatever flow the original score was intended to have. I think Kaneko might just do that (or else he'd have asked Ifukube in the first place.)
Actually, the gratuitous misuse of his music in GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE (1989) is one reason Ifukube decided to score GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH in 1991 -- his daughter pointed out "They're going to use your music no matter what, so why not have some control over it?" I'd be fascinated to see him work with the estimable Shusuke Kaneko, but do sense that he feels kind of burned out on the series. At any rate, of current composers, Ko Otani is as good a choice as anyone in Japan.

Thanks. I haven't heard "Darkstalkers" or his "Gamera" work, but I was impressed by "Daughter of Darkness." Go on Napster and look for "Startica."

RE: Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of DarknessPer Wedge's suggestion, I downloaded "Startica" and am very impressed. Is there a score available for this film?

Yes, there is. And it shouldn't be too hard to find on the internet. If you're curious about the rest of the score, Napster should have more. The sound has quite a range, with several prominent themes and complex variations. Also, a unique incorporation of sound-effects. I recommend it.
