I have the movie Secret of NIMH It's one of my favorite movies and I never knew who did the music until I glanced at it one day wondering who it was because it was so beautiful. I didn't know the soundtrack was available! Can you still find it in stores or do you have to buy it online? I might have to convince my cheapskate brother to buy it for me online. lol. he is so &#&* cheap!

Welcome...do you prefer Anya or Angie?

Secret of Nimh is a wonderful score...in regards to The Grinch...I am one of the avid Horner supporters on this board (along with a good number of others) and I would say this is a fair to good work for him...we need to lose the dialogue though (You'll find many a thread here relating to that very subject.)

Anyway, welcome. I look forward to future discussions.

Hey Angie what's up..listen to the guys get Secret of NIMH right away. Here's my opinion on the other scores:

Christopher Young's Urban Legend is an excellent score. He goes back to his horror roots on this one. Too bad there isn't enough score on that song laden Milan CD. But Intrada released a 50 minute promo of the complete score bout 3 years ago for a limited time and i was lucky to get one and it's worth seeking out.

Horner's The Grinch is a nice score that reminds me a bit of Bicentennial Man at times but Horner tries to go back to his old orchestrial style with this one and it's really good. The song/score album is a joke. There's dialog featured on Horner's music which is sad because the score should've been featured more. There's a promo/boot of it going around featuring the entire score which runs 72 minutes. That's the one to have.

I wasn't too thrilled with Goldenthal's Pet Semetary, but it had some good moments in it. But the music fits the film perfectly and it's a decent horror score.

If you need any help, just drop me a line anytime you want. Laters!

yes, I have seen reports on here about it. I am a Horner supporter too! I love his music.

glad you agree! I love the movie and the score!

really? lol. I would never have expected such a thing from Horner lol just kidding. being sarcastic here. Horner tends to go back to his previous films in a lot of things. Did you notice the similarity of Braveheart in Titanic? The Perfect Storm was very good, but I think it resembles Titanic. I sent the clip of "Enemy at The Gates" that I found on here to my friend Crista who is a die-hard Williams fan, and she said it sounded like Schindler's List! I agree with that completely! I also sense a little Apollo 13 in there too.

    thatnks for answering!

A nice little formula for 'The Grinch'

Take about 40 min(less if I remember right) of mediorce Horner score, add in annoying dialogue from the movie, tack on some songs that really have no relevance to the movie...(oh wait, that's right they were 'Inspired by the movie') and all that equals the Interscope release of the soundtrack.

I would try and track down the promo, it's 71 minutes of dialogue free Horner score although it really doesn't make it much better, lifts and borrows can be heard thoughout and there was also some rather...intersting instrument selection (I personally thought it sounded like someone farting in a couple of the tracks) probally only a good buy if you're a Horner nut.

Personally I would have liked to see what Danny Elfman could have done for a movie like this, he IS the King of Christmas after all

not at all! I meant to say that the Omen is fantastic! I was wondering what everyone's opinions on other horror scores were, ex. Scream, Nightmare on Elm St. etc. The Omen is genius I think! I also like Urban Legend! Have you heard it? Why didn't Mr. Young do the sequel?

URBAN LEGEND is a GREAT score. Young didn't score it because its own director, John Ottman, did. I'm not sure Chris would have wanted to do the sequel anyway -- he just felt like doing a horror film right at that time, and it was a choice betweeen URBAN LEGEND and I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. I think he made the right choice (it probably helped him that director Jamie Blanks is a genuine fan of his and was dying to work with him).

Excellent call Rocco. Director Jaime Blanks actually temped most of the movie with Young's score for Dream Lover which I sadly gave up because it's the stepping stone for Urban Legend and that's why it has the horror quality feel. Young is getting A-List projects now (about damn time) because he's really deserved it.

Adding my voice: Get Secret Of NIMH!

As for the Grinch... I am also a Horner supporter, but I cannot recommend this one. First of all, the song album stinks. Second of all, the complete version has more, but isn't really better. There are two themes in the score: The Grinch theme (where are you, christmas?) and the theme for the Grinch himself. Thing is, while the first one is a nice theme, more or less, Horner almost never uses it, and the song sucks. :b
The second theme is just annoying, and worse, it's used ALL THE TIME! Add to that poorly done generic Horner music and some VERY irritating tracks (The Cheermeister Games... ugh) and The Grinch comes out as a very poor score.
Some people seem to like it; some don't. I clearly fall into the latter catagory.

Another vote for NIMH... which seems to win the race.

(Though I have not heard Goldenthal's "Pet Cemetary" on CD and I've only seen this dreadful movie once long ago, judged by Elliot Goldenthal's track record the music is probably good as well.)

If I can convince my cheapskate brother to buy it for me online I definitely will get it. thank you for the comments. I love the main title; the crescendo is amazing.

I know cialogue tends to clutter up some soundtracks, but what are your thoughts on "More Music from BRAVEHEART?" To me, there isn't that much dialogue on it, compared to others.

Get The Secret of Nimh. Great music.

Alan Menken is overrated, his songs may be good but his scores sound to lame for my liking. The only score he probably should have won an oscar for was Hunch Back.

As for Horner I'm part of a group who either believe he peaked too early in his career and has nothing left to offer or he has just gotten lazy and resorts to throwing a bunch of notes on a page and calling it a score. If you want good Horner get scores like Brainstorm, Str Trek II, Glory, Krull and Cocoon.

The Omen is great and I would recommend the rest of the trilogy as well, scored by Jerry of course. If you want some more horror by Goldsmith try the Mephisto Waltz and Alien.

    Welcome to the board.

I bought "More Music From Braveheart" because I'm a Horner fan and I love the original release.

Frankly, for 30 buck, I felt genuinely raughted. They don't even spell Wallace's name correctly on the packaging...

Although not a score in the true sense of the word, John Carpenter's "Halloween", is for me, the most effective horror film score.
