So I really REALLY love this music. The movie CAN be a tad tedious but I love the mood and the music in the film is good.

But stand-alone music is always a plus and I think this score has legs all its own.

I can't think of anything else Moroder scored (aside from Donna Summer LOL).

What do ya'll think? Am I in the minority...yet again???

    Nope....I love it too Meegle

I was addicted to this score for awhile, and tried to find other good ones Moroder scored....alas all I came up with was
METROPOLIS: the Columbia CD has 8 songs which he did the music for and two score cues...there is a compl.boot out for this ,but I can't get my paws on it

SCARFACE: more songs with a brief score cut or two on an MCA Europe CD....

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS: we all know about this one right?

ELECTRIC DREAMS: same as above, but some good songs this time

CAT PEOPLE is probably the best 'score only' album Moroder has done, and yes I guess it is a guilty pleasure since people diss this guy so much.
Guess ya have to be into electronics....

I like how he uses the blaster beam, sound efx in the score, and contrasts them with more melodic elements....and the fact that James Horner pilfered the love theme here in his score for GORKY PARK!

    Best,
    Sean

Actually, I have this disc, and I DO like it, and think it was the perfect score for that oddball movie. Love the David Bowie song as well. (Years later, Bowie still has fun tweaking Moroder in interviews: "Oh yeah, the guy who put the fascist beat behind Donna Summer!" and an anecdote about Moroder calling director Paul Schrader about "that apartment in AMERICAN GIGOLO, I want mine to look just like that!" "Sure," Schrader replies, "Richard Gere's apartment looked pretty cool." "NO!" Moroder yells, "I mean the PIMP'S apartment!")

Moroder's career is a bit of an oddity, but I can't think of a movie he was chosen for where he seemed out of place: AMERICAN GIGOLO also works, as does MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. And while it's frankly bizarre he won the Oscar that year against such ferocious competition as Williams, Goldsmith and Morricone, that IS precisely the score that movie wanted, and actually was something of a groundbreaker. I found the LP a bit puzzling though, something more akin to a concept album than a faithful representation of the score.

I think Moroder's success helped pave the way for Hans Zimmer's, whatever you think of that. (here comes Andre! )

Yes Your H', I think your right!

having seen a picture of Moroder (circa late 70's) I can believe he wanted the Pimps Apartment

p.s. I too love that score for Cat People!, ...and obviously not influenced by the gorgeous face of the Kinski girl on the album cover?...ooohhh No!

No guilty pleasure here....I love it! Bowie's "Putting out Fire" is sooo cool! One of, if not THE, best thing he's ever done.
I first heard this S.T. back in '82, when I walked through the door of a small music shop, and heard "Irena's Theme" waft over me like a gentle spring breeze. It was soooo sensuous, it literally turned me on right then and there. I immediately had to have it.
At the time, I hadn't even seen the film yet, but the music is so HOT, especially the afore-mentioned "Irena's Theme".
People say, Ravel's "Bolero" is sensual, and I agree, BUT "Irena's Theme" gives "Bolero" a run for the money IMHO.
If you haven't already got this one, I highly recommend it. If you're ready to make out, put "Irena's Theme" on a loop and enjoy!

NP:Cat People (Irena's Theme) on REPEAT MODE...Giorgio Moroder

Didn't he also score Stallone's "Over the Top"?

Without a doubt, that was the most influential and though provoking film of our time.

Giorgio Moroder reminds me the disco era. There he was ok, but in filmscoring is not my kind of music. I own his pop songs albuns Flashdance, Over The Top and of course, Cat People, but this last for just one reason: I'm a crazy Bowie fan. He own version of Putting Out a Fire in his Let's Dance album is not good as the original. He only wrote the lyrics, the music is by our moustache-friend, Moron, oops, Moroder.

...and speaking of REALLY guilty pleasures, I also picked up this weekend(along with Meco's American Werewolf LP) Moroder's FOXES....two lp's of Donna Summer, disco, and, surprisingly, a few score cues. It's not as 'synth' as I would have liked from Moroder, but oh well. In light of how bad pop music is now, I get nostalgic for this stuff....
Some of it sucks hard, other bits are more fun....I will now accept your mocking insults.

Er, keep on trucking and whatnot....

Cat People is definitely a guilty pleasure for me... There are aspects of the film that are amazing, such as the production design, cinematography and the petite little creature known as Tess, er, Nastassia Kinski but on a whole, it's undercooked. I'm a fan of Paul Schrader's and I think of this as a minor entry in his filmography, an opportunity for him to expand and develop the visual style he started using with American Giggolo. I took a film class at SFSU and we spent a good portion of the class studying Paul Schrader. Ah, Nastassia Kinski... I bet every director she worked with in the 80's fell madly in love with her. As for Moroder's score, I love it, although I really can't stand Bowie's song. I think it cheapens Moroder's efforts.
