With the sudden invasion by Fisher on another thread it got me thinking that there are some good Song Soundtracks out there. So what are you favorites?

    There are a few rules though;

    1. Songs must be part of the film, not just crappy remixes or remakes of good songs thrown onto the End Credits to make a few bucks ie: Godzilla, The Album

    2. Songs must be heard for longer than 30 seconds in film ie: Person walks into the room and a song is playing in the background for a few seconds).

    So here are mine:

Ghostbusters (Great mixture of Score and songs)

Purple Rain (Prince's last good album, he's been downhill ever since IMHO)

    Top Gun (Very good)

    Beverly Hills Cop (ditto)

If Great Expectations qualifies, add that to my list!
Another I just thought of: East-West. It has some opera, and one song, and I love it.
And what about A Little Princess?

NP: Men In Black, Elfman ****

    REPO MAN
    THE WARRIORS
    STREETS OF FIRE
BATMAN FOREVER (maybe many of those songs aren't in the finished picture -- I'd have to check the movie again, which I'm not about to do -- or are not heard for long, but I like a lot of them)

I quote Anthony LaPaglia from the 1995 feature film So I Married An Axe Murderer when I say, "You just don't get it, do you?"

JJ, I get the Bill Murray thing. You would have to shoot me if I didn't.

Best songtracks that everybody in the world should own:

    1. Rushmore
    2. Wonder Boys
    3. Saturday Night Fever (I can't get enough of Kool & The Gang's "Open Sesame"; that wicked crazy horn part!)

OK, maybe not Saturday Night Fever for everyone. What the hell else IS there? Ah, thought of another good one. Bringing Out The Dead.

    Shaun

    - Carrie (Deluxe Edition)

    - There's Something About Mary (Is She Really Going Out With Him, Mary's Prayer, Build Me Up Buttercup.)

    - Grease 2 (I have all Michelle Pheifer's albums! )

    - Victor/Victoria (The 1982 film on a GNP re-release disc.)

    - The Rocky Story (But how could they have omitted "Go For It," the rap song in Rocky V? If I understand the term correctly, that song was slammin'!)

The American Pie 2 soundtrack is awesome. I can listen to the entire CD all the way through and not hear a song I don't like as much as the others.... they all rock !

My vote goes to Scorsese, Michael Mann, Wim Wenders and Stanley Kubrick for their use of songs:

    1.Mann:
    (a) Heat is the ultimate song/score experience.
    (b) Ali II is a great mix of Gerrard's score and the film's extensive catalogue of blues hits.
    (c) Insider - since it uses pre-released tracks by Gerrard/Bourke as well as tracks from the incredible Jan Garbarek and a Massive Attack remix to great effect.

    2. Scorsese:
    (a) Bringing out the Dead
    (b) Casino - From Delerue's Camille theme to House of the Rising Sun, this one has it all.
    (c) Gangs of New York - Though I'm sure I'd rather have another great Bernstein score, the film's eclectic mix was by no means unaffecting.

    3. Wim Wenders - here's the 'man'.
    (a) Faraway, So Close
    (b) Wings of Desire
    (c) Beyond the Clouds (w/ Antonioni) - the use of Van Morrison instrumentals and material from the U2/Eno Passengers album is inspired.
    (d) Million Dollar Hotel - Hassell, Bono, Eno and Lanois with the occasional appearance of the rest of U2 and Milla Jovovich. Say no more.
    (e) Buena Vista Social Club - probably doesn't count since it's devoted to the music of the Cubans.
    (f) Until the End of the World - everyone from here to eternity seems to have contributed a song of some kind to the confused film. It certainly wasn't the soundtrack that let it down.

    4. Kubrick
    (a) Eyes Wide Shut - is this album not a great parting gift from the greatest of directors?
    (b) Full Metal Jacket - give me Nancy Sinatra... "These boots are made for walkin' ."

Off the top of my head, a Radiohead instrumental was used to great effect in Unfaithful, and whenever John Barry writes a song, it fits the film pretty well (think 'The Last Valley' or 'The Lion in Winter').

    NP Green Mile (Newman)
