Okay, I'm opening up a inquiry into the best love/romantic theme ever that I could give to my cutie pie.
Unfortunately, I do not have all the Score CDs that would enable me to do so. So bring it on. All suggestions will be considered. Thankx!!!posted 03-04-2001 09:12 PM PT (US)

"I Remember" from THE WIND AND THE LION (Jerry Goldsmith)"Robert and Mary" from ROB ROY (Carter Burwell)
"Luke and Leia" from RETURN OF THE JEDI (John Williams) (I know this is a theme for sibling love as opposed to romantic love, but still think it's a prettier composition than the Han and Leia music from EMPIRE)
"All I Wanted" from OCTOPUSSY (John Barry)
I have to admit I'm quite fond of James Horner's love theme from TITANIC as well. His BRAVEHEART love theme is nice as well -- actually, the love theme has always been one of Horner's principal strengths, at least as far back as GORKY PARK.
Not technically a love theme, but as beautiful as any you'd want to hear: John Barry's prologue from RAISE THE TITANIC.
NP: THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER (Jerry Goldsmith) (none too romantic, this, I'm afraid, though it has so much else to recommend it)

The love theme from Superman is probably one of the best love themes ever composed. I'd go for that... and also, by Williams, would be the highly romantic Sabrina. Awesome score - incredibly (and sadly) underrated. Any love theme from his Star Wars scores, whether it be "Luke and Leia," "Leia's Theme," or "Han Solo and the Princess."Then there's John Barry. I could go on forever about his music, though Somewhere In Time comes to mind as the most logical choice. It's been deemed the most romantic film score of all time. By who? I have no idea... but it definitely fits the bill. Out of Africa would also be worth looking in to. Also, any instrumental version of his Bond themes would probably work. Especially Octopussy, A View to a Kill, and You Only Live Twice.
Morricone has written quite a few good love themes as well, though I'd consult our Morricone experts Alex Cope and Andre Lux on his music. My Morricone collection is still very small.
The love theme from Krull is quite good, though still unmistakably a James Horner composition. Some might consider this a drawback, though if you're giving it to your girlfriend, I'm sure she wouldn't know the difference (forgive me if I've underestimated her!). Let's not forget Titanic, though I almost hesistate to mention it as I got burnt out on the score a long time ago.
Forever Young by Maestro Goldsmith sports a great romantic theme, as does The Russia House, though I'd stay away if you aren't too keen on the saxophone. Great scores, regardless. Goldsmith's love theme from Star Trek: Insurrection a very appropriate inclusion. The love theme from The Wind and the Lion is priceless, as well.
Michael Kamen did some beautiful love theme-like work for 101 Dalmations and What Dreams May Come. Of course, we can't forget his highly recognizable theme from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, "Everything I Do." His orchestral version (as featured on the CD) is great.
The Prince of Tides by James Newton Howard is wonderfully romantic. Incredibly beautiful. Probably one of my most favorite. Check it out.
The love theme from For Love of the Game by Basil Poledouris is great.
Also check out Last of the Dogmen by David Arnold. I'm not sure if the theme qualifies as a love theme, persay, as it serves a double-purpose in the film, but it's still incredible. Also one of my favorites.
How this helps.

Very good picks, Jeron, I should have remembered Horner's KRULL and Kamen's ROBIN HOOD all by my lonesome, but didn't. I'd add to that the beautiful WHAT DREAMS MAY COME theme, based on an old sketch he cowrote with Mark Snow. And speaking of Horner, "Airport Goodbye" from THE PELICAN BRIEF is just astonishing, though perhaps more melancholy than rapturous.NP: CAPRICORN ONE (this has a more typical by-the-numbers Goldsmith love theme in it that I would not recommend over any of those mentioned above)

Nice idea, sir. Two more suggestions, both from the nearly bottomless library of Ennio Morricone: "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" (not a standard romantic theme, but irrepressibly lovely), from THE MISSION; and Morricone's "Monica's Theme" from MARCO POLO, if you have access to it (I personally do not, alas.)[Message edited by H Rocco on 03-04-2001]

Most lovely? Robin and Marian and High Road to China. Two odd ones. Recently watched One-Eyed Jacks. Forgot what a wonderful love theme it had. Same with Tiomkin's love theme in the Unforgiven.
Ben Hur, Cousins, Shadowlands, Dying Young, Legend of 1900, Now Voyager, My Foolish Heart, The Quiet Man.

John Barry, Somewhere in Time.a little obvious perhaps, but there simply is none better, and none more unabashedly romantic. Get either the OST-CD or John Debney's great re-recording on Varese (which has the complete score; lovely).
A secondary choice for me, as fdar as love themes go, is from another John Barry score, The Scarlet Letter. rapturous!
have fun!

Of course Hadrian, you could really show her how you feel (in a purely materialistic way) AND support the original artists by buying all the above mentioned CDs.

Also, "Angel Pen" from The War by T. Newman is a beautiful piece. I haven't seen the film but I don't think it's a "love" theme as such, just damn pretty.
The beginning of "Logan & Rogue" from X-Men could be seen as romantic, outside of the film. There are several tracks on The English Patient, namely "Read me to sleep".
As Joan said, The Legend of 1900 by Moriconne. "Playing Love" is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard.
If you really want to suck up, put on "Greatest Woman on Earth" from As Good as it Gets and highlight the track title if/when you make a track listing for the case.

Morricone's Lolita is beautiful!John Barry's Playing By Heart is great from begining to end and I would even choose this over Somewhere In Time! (JJ, I reckon the Debney recording is even BETTER than the original?!)
For a steamy night in it's got to be Barry's Body Heat

Materialistic? Slightly? But it will not suffice as a B-day gift alone.
Sooo...Keep it coming. I'm writing all these down. Excellent suggestion. Has anyone thought about Graeme Revell's The Saint? Pure joy. Track 5, 10, and 14. Something with a modern edge too, perhaps?
Believe it or not, I actually have some of these CDs. Though burning do seems, more or less, like shoplifting.
Anyway....
The love theme from Frankenstein is not an original theme, but rather a motif. Though it is one that works well all the time. MacKenzie's "The lost Child" has the same exact motivic passage in his score. Granted he wrote it after Frankenstein...When I saw Frankenstein for the first time, I noticed that the love theme was very similar to something, though I have no idea what.posted 03-05-2001 07:34 AM PT (US)

Doyle's "Frankenstein Love Theme" is the perfect expression of the Eternal Love that exists between a Brazilian and his sausage.[1] "I Am You, You Are Me, We Are One" by Fred Karlin. From LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS. It's a pop-guitar tune with flutes. Unavailable on CD.
[2] "Love Theme" from THE BURGLERS by Ennio Morricone. I don't know if it's contained on any compilation CDs.
[3] "Instrumental Theme" from THE HEARTBREAK KID by Garry Sherman. Unavailable on CD.
[4] "Scene Unseen" by John Barry. From PLAYING BY HEART.
[5] "Phil's Love Theme" by The Lovin Spoonful. From WHAT'S UP, TIGER LILY?. There's an understated yearning quality in this guitar tune. Unavailable on CD.

Veronica's Theme from DANGEROUS BEAUTY and the theme from EVER AFTER, both by George Fenton.I must back up every Goldsmith selection mentioned, especially THE WIND AND THE LION.
In addition to the other Morricone scores mentioned, the love theme from CINEMA PARADISO is also quite beautiful.
"Big My Secret" from Michael Nyman's THE PIANO has always been a favorite of mine.
Anything from CITY OF ANGELS or MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE (both by Gabriel Yared) would also be very nice.

Love Theme from "The Mummy" by Jerry Goldsmith is excellent.

Another I like is Han and Leia's theme from Empire Strikes Back.....but there isn't really a track on the CD that performs this theme to it's fullest. The track that comes close is the beginning of "Finale/End Credits."[Message edited by Dylan on 08-21-2001]

One of the most romantic composers of the last decade or so has been George Fenton. There are a number of great titles to choose from, "In Love And War" is one which comes to mind. I listened to "Dangerous Beauty" last evening (hadn't heard in awhile). That is one gorgeous score, start to finish!

I admit that I'm not a real fan of James Horner, but his theme for JENNY in THE ROCKETEER is the very best "love theme" composed for a woman character in the nineties. It has to be experienced within the movie the first time. Ah - all those violins... so perfectly enhance the true beauty of Jennifer Connelly
(- hey, Shaun, this one's for your wife
)George Fenton's score for EVER AFTER is enchanting, and yet its romantic quality doesn't seem as a cliché.
Patrick Doyle's "thousand violins" soar on an autumnal warmth in THE WEDDING NIGHT cue from MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN.
And, yes, the darker side of love music can be experienced on Jerry Goldsmith's BASIC INSTINCT and John Williams' PRESUMED INNOCENT. And if you like to hear "thousand violins" with some "pornographic color", I suggest Pino Donaggio's DRESSED TO KILL
