Ok, this movie looks realy nifty. And the music is the same as in the first, Silvestri's score? If it is, very cool!

I saw one the other day at the movie theatre. MY GOD THAT THING LOOKS CHEAP!

Plus, one of the giveaways of a bad movie, is when, in a trailer, three or four scenes from the movie are chopped up in little pieces, then pasted together to make the movie look as if it has more action than it really does.

What I saw in that trailer was exactly that. The same two or three scenes, interrupting each other and reprising after.

About the only good thing about that "movie" will be Silvestri's score.

Chrono/Kyp/Brian ( ) : No, that's not Silvestri's score. The first part is from Bram Stoker's Dracula. The rest is Cutthroat Island.

    I like the trailer, too.

So have I until The Mummy.

Turned out to be dumber than I expected.

Second one not only looks as silly, it looks cheaper in effects.

Whatever the case, it'll just be another bad movie I'll catch on video.

I agree, too much bad comedy. Thats actually the feedback I heard from alot of people after walking out of the theater where I work. Noone really expected it to take a comedic approach.
And I think that is why alot of people didn't like it, including me. If you are going to make a funny movie, then make sure you hire funny actor/actresses otherwise the whole things just turns out to be one big cartoon, like the first one.

BTW that second trailer looks really cheesy, I mean the special effects look good, but everthing else looks weak. Did anyone noticed that every line that Frasier says in the trailer was stupid? Ecxept for "Honey!, these guys don't use doors!" I liked that one.

The only humor anybody can come up with these days involves sex. I'm also tired of the Adam Sandler and Tom Green-style cheap and dumb 'humor.'

It seems I'm much more a fan of British humor... I love Robert Llewellyn on Junkyard Wars.

Hogan's Heros is much funnier than the sludge that CBS, ABC, or NBC can come up with.

Hmmm... Brendan Fraser is a pretty humorous guy. He's evoked a LOT of laughter from me in every comedic role he's ever played. But then again, I guess Bill Murray would have played a better Indiana Jones-type than Fraser did.

Again, it all depends on your sense of humor...

    Jeron,
Normally you seem to be the voice of reason on this message board, but I think you are reaching on this topic.
I'll agree Brendan Fraser can be a humorous guy, but does that mean all his roles have to be Encino Man. I have seen him do serious roles before like School Ties where he is still good. I think overall the movie would have been a lot better had it been more dramatic, sort of like the trailers were for this movie.

Daniel, thanks for the compliment. I guess I'm a bit biased toward The Mummy. Stephen Sommers, for some reason, strikes me as the type of guy I'd get along with really well. Plus, the film features a score by Jerry Goldsmith. It's like a "Jeron TRAP." Now you all know how to get me. I'm not sure - perhaps it's just a guilty pleasure. We all have them. Brendan Fraser did a great job, in my opinion - though, as we've all heard before, we are entitled to our own.

I do understand the point you make with "Encino Man." That, incidentally, is a film I'm not to keen on.

Perhaps The Mummy may have worked better w/ more of a dramatic edge. I suppose there is always the original...

I could never bring myself to see ENCINO MAN, but that does seem to be the template on which most of which Fraser's subsequent career has been built. But how different is that from how MOST movie stars' careers build? Eastwood plays Eastwood, Cruise plays Cruise, and so on. Fraser additionally has managed to stretch even within the confines of his particular physicality and personality -- I refer you to the vastly overrated (but superbly acted) GODS AND MONSTERS, and the vastly underrated Michael Ritchie/Albert Brooks picture THE SCOUT. I'm hardly interested in at least half the pictures he does, but am far from offended that after THE MUMMY's success, he is considered a big-ticket star ... far less deserving people wear the same moniker, and with considerably less humor and grace. I have no idea whether Fraser will ever really stretch, or even will really want to, but right now he's one of the less offensive topliners the studios are begging us to watch.

if I may chime in with an opinion - this, as they say, is why they make chocolate and vanilla. For myself, I'm with Jeron on this. "The Mummy" has its tongue firmly in its cheek, and frankly that's part of the fun of the movie, and it's one reason why Goldsmith's score is such fun for me as well - with that old "shiek" music woven into the music(I recognize it, not sure what it's called). Brendan Frazier is a perfect casting choice because he CAN do comedy (watch "Blast from the Past"). I think the film was designed as a fun, Saturday night action/adventure, and just like Indiana Jones (okay, not in the same league, but clearly trying for the same thing) it's part cartoon, part action film, part amusement park ride. If the filmmakers took themselves too seriously, you could wind up with something like "The Relic."

I don't think the sequel looks as much "cheesy" as it does "over the top." I see too much money, too many gimmicks, too much forced everything and probably not enough attention to the script. We'll see.

These movies are light-hearted fluff...a throwback to classic B-movies. I welcome a broad spectrum of films...for every Traffic I see I need another Mummy...the world just can't be that grim.

And if anyone cares...$20million of the budget was allocated to ILM...the effects will not be bad...over the top maybe...but when was that ever a bad thing?

I will laugh and enjoy the ride...no more, no less.

    Hei! No pun intended!
I love videogames - just because I am a mature, brilliant and, most of all, humble person it doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good video game!

And the trailer was quite good.
The movie looks much better than the first one - which was quite weak (give me DEEP RISING anytime instead of THE MUMMY!).

Too bad Goldsmith won't score it.
Alan Silvestry is just a hack.

I agree that Silvestry has composed some quite nice scores, like THE ABYSS, JUDGE DREDD, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, FERNGULLY...

But I don't like his bombastica music.

I think Silvestri will do a serviceable job...but he's got a hard act to follow.

As a side note...the Mexican was an entertaining score...his simple theme with the harmonica worked perfectly with the movie.

I know we all have our "love and hate" scores, that is just our opionions. So if someone hates, someone else loves. Anyways, I am looking forward to this movie, haven't even seen the trailer yet. I loved the first movie, but being the guy watcher I am, well, I loved Frasier in The Scout and Encino Man. I love cheesy movies, although I may not consider them cheesy. Like the Haunting/

Hm, parts of Judge Dredd (great indeed) do seem quite bombastic to me?

Sheila, "The Haunting" is a good example. I enjoyed this movie too - and coincidentally, I just got through watching it w/ my Grandmother (she wanted to compare it to the original movie). While the story line as a whole is kinda silly - and the ending is quite retarded, it's still fun. I get spooked out every time - and I know what's gonna happen!
