    3.1.01 = payday baby!!

    I got today.

All The Pretty Horses - Marty Stuart

What a great score!! I love how it combines the acoustic guitar and traditional fiddle with a symphonic orhcestra and a little Spanish flavor(in a couple of the tracks) it's quite the smooth listning experience.

    Red Planet - Graeme Revell

This is actually my first score that I've gotten by Graeme Revell and I'm pretty impressed with the whole 'new-age' electronic feel the whole CD has. One thing is for sure; Emma Shapplin has such a HEAVENLY voice!

I also picked up Waterworld by James Newton Howard but haven't listened to it yet. Anyone want to share their impressions?

I'm sure as the month progresses I'll be posting quite a bit more 'new stuff' in here....ah so many scores; so little money

NP: Red Planet - Graeme Revell

    Hey Drix

WATERWORLD is good, I also picked it up cheap years ago.
Good action cues, nice atmospheric music, some atonal interludes...best track is ____ Story(I cant remember the person's name!). It comes late in the album, and has that pounding drum rhythm...maybe someone can help me since Im still at work

Anyway its a nice buy, although FSM tore it to pieces in a comparison with SUPERMAN in one of their old issues. It showed that contemp. scores don't hold a candle to the classics

    Best,
    Sean

I got Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Tan Dun) today. Quite impressed, though I'm not going overboard yet: maybe after a few more listens. Much of it seems somewhat static compared to what most of us might be used to, but I do believe that that aspect works in its favour, in the sense that it helps to maintain a kind of etherial suspense.

By the way, where do I file this CD? Is he Mr Dun or Mr Tan Dun?

    Nah...it is very good indeed

The Cliffhanger theme is one of the best themes I've ever heard, you just wanna put a rope out your window and begin to climb when you hear it. Hehe.

The action music is very good too, a solid release

Might as well get LAST OF THE MOHICANS ... it's the same thing, only better.

I like Jones's funky KISS OF DEATH, but that's probably not to everyone's taste. I've never heard a CD of THE DARK CRYSTAL, but remember that score fondly.

'Escaping from he Smokers'--Track 2 is my favorite (I'm a sucker for over the top heroic themes ) 'Swimming' is nice soothing track. It was a great buy....although I probally didn't get it as cheap as you did.

    I've gotten,

Star Trek: Insurrection - Jerry Goldsmith

Star Trek: First Contact - Jerry Goldsmith

This is one title I'd love to find just to test my memory of the score. I'm probably one of the few people on the planet who actually saw this unintentionally hilarious movie during it's one week theatrical run before it disappeared forever. (Did the Reverend Goon burn all the prints I wonder)

New additions since my Footlight splurge:

Raiders Of The Lost Ark (Williams)
-Another one I'd put off for too long.

And now on the way from FSM:

    The Exorcist (Schifrin rejected score)
-Finally rented the movie and watched it for the first time ever last night which spurred this choice.
Conquest/Battle Of The Planet Of The Apes (Scott/Rosenmann)
    -Must complete the collection!

The score recording is rather hilarious, too. The performance by the musicians is fine, but the whole orchestra sounds as if it is sitting in the front row. It reminds me of a marching band sound. The liner notes go on to explain that the studio was too small for the orchestra and as a result they had microphone difficulties.

I can't help but laugh at the more 'busy' parts of the score, like the 8th track (The Landing.) The players seem to have plenty of enthusiasm, but it just didn't translate well onto the recording. Some softer tracks sound fine, like the "Love Theme."

I personally love the integration of of 'Korean Folksong' (tracks 3, 10, and others) into the score. In 1998, I was in a band that performed Variations on a Korean Folk Song, which is based on the same theme. It was fun (and surprising) to hear music that I hadn't thought about for about 3 years.

I picked this one up since it's fairly rare and was a reasonable price (brand new, $21.)

    NP: Inchon

Just in: CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES(Tom Scott)/ BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (Leonard Rosenman):

The score to Conquest is quite interesting, though I need a replay. Some of it has a reduced TV feel to it, as if it were for one of those 70s TV Movies done by Robert Drasnin or somebody (that's not a bad thing: 70s TV music was pretty damn good). Some of the lengthier atonal tracks didn't grip me at first, but I'm sure I'll end up loving them. I see that Tom Scott even invented an instrument for this (shades of Gil Melle).

It appears that Tom Scott is a saxophonist. I wonder if he's the Tom Scott who did the sax solos on the Taxi Driver album (not the music in the actual film, that was Ronny Lang, the album being a re-recording).

And BENEATH THE 12 MILE REEF (Bernard Herrmann): Haven't heard it in its entirety yet, but although it seems to have wow, at least it has WOW wow.

Oops! Didn't mean to forget Leonard Rosenman after all that Tom Scott rigmarole. BATTLE is fine! Apart from a strangely circus-ish feel to some of the main title, this is good solid Rosenman. You know what to expect (DUM DUM DUM DUM DUM. DO DEE DO DEE DO DEE DEEEEEEEEEEEE!)

I bet that WAS the same Tom Scott ... don't know for sure, though.

    New arrivals include:

    THE GIFT (Christopher Young)
    SO LO (Danny Elfman) (songs)
    GREAT COMPOSERS: ELMER BERNSTEIN
JOHN BEAL TRAILER PROJECT (John Beal)

and a trio of head-bangers for roomie, one by Husker Du and two by Jesus & Mary In Chains, all of which will no doubt be coming out my ears for weeks to come.

    Bought these 6 scores today:

    Titus - Goldenthal
The Great Escape - Bernstein (Ryko)
    The Ten Commandments - Bernstein

    found this at Wherehouse Records in the used bin but brand new, oh well saved about $11.00 go figure;

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - Williams

I'm kinda disappointed in these two I picked up:

    Mission to Mars - Morricone
    The Untouchables - Morricone

I'm beginning to think only a few can appreciate his music and I may not be one of them.

(where's my head-scratching icon? the pointer will have to do, as it implies the horizontal back-and-forth motion one uses to rub one's own scalp, when vexed, worried, or merely puzzled)

Mark, if you like Ifukube -- or even more stylistically to the point, Masaru Sato -- I think you can get into Morricone as well. THE UNTOUCHABLES isn't, to my ear, one of his more interesting scores. MISSION TO MARS might be a bit too electic for beginners, although as far as film music is concerned, you're obviously not a beginner. Do you know his Western stuff? Horror stuff? I'm quite sure that there's a lot out there you'd like. Unless you've already heard the Western scores and don't like those either, in which case, you are simply a sad, bitter little man who will never know either the meaning of, or the feeling of truest, most impeccable joy -- IMHO of course, as Ford A. Thaxton would say!

    your pal, H.

P.S. This might be better suited to a whole other thread, but I do recognize Morricone can be a kind of an acquired taste. How much of his stuff do you actually know? There are SO MANY indifferently produced albums of his music out there ...

Actually I thought about posting another thread because I do feel Ennio is an acquired taste but I didn't want to bring the wrath of Andre down upon us.

I am familiar with his western work. M2M has it's moments and the organ music doesn't bug me as much as the cue #4 with the electronics mixed over the moaning/hissing sounds. I find that annoying and thought the piece would have worked with only the moaning/hisses.

I must admit I'm kinda disappointed that jaunty little Cajun sounding cue to open the movie isn't included on the score. Must have been an actual song written by someone else.
