I found these two cut-outs in a used bin -- but they both look new to me!

Judge Dredd (Silvestri) - Really great stuff.
JFK (Williams) - Boring as hell. Maybe I haven't listened to it close enough...

... and my non-score purchase... a computer game, "Airline Tycoon." Just what I need to distract me from midterms.

    Bought:

    • Carl Orff: Carmina Burana (Janowitz, Stolze, Fischer-Dieskau; Chor und Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin, Eugen Jochum)
I already had this on CD before (and it is by far the best interpretation I've ever heard), but this is the remastered release from Deutsche Grammophon's "Originals" series, and I just couldn't resist picking it up for the budget price. After a brief comparison, I didn't notice a large difference to the older release, but I know the older one had some glitches, so a more concentrated listen might convince me.
    • A Bug's Life (DVD) - I've never seen the film, but I love every Pixar film I've seen so far, and I also got it for budget price.

Borrowed from the library (probably to be copied):

    • Out of Africa (John Barry)
    • Anton Bruckner: Symphony #6 (Münchner Philharmoniker, Sergiu Celibidache)
I'm continuing to get Celibidache's Bruckner recordings, his 7th is superb, and this one sounds very good as well.

Still waiting for the mail to bring "Inchon" but in the meantime:

"The Day The Earth Stood Still" (Herrmann)
-I found the movie to be hypocritical in the worst way (Alien threatens to murder five billion men, women and children in the name of "peace" if we don't do as he says? Uh, sorry, no) but the score is a true classic of the sci-fi genre paving the way for much that was to come.

"The Spy Who Loved Me" (Hamlisch)
-Just need "Live And Let Die" and "OHMSS" in terms of the original EMI releases. I'm not holding my breath waiting for expansions so I might as well complete my Bond collection as things exist now.

    Received in the mail:
    • Favorite Love Themes of FSM Messageboard Fans - Thanks, Logied!

    From the library:

    • Hellraiser (Christopher Young) - The back cover design looks exactly like that of Varese's Omen discs. I find it funny that Damien Omen II, also released by Silva Screen, does NOT have that design.
    • Anton Bruckner: Symphonies #3 & 4 (Vienna Philharmonic, Karl Böhm)
    • Anton Bruckner: Symphony #4 (Vienna Philharmonic, Bernard Haitink)
    • Anton Bruckner: Symphony #5 (Münchner Philharmoniker, Sergiu Celibidache)

Hmmmm. Do I see a pattern here?

The Escaflowne CDs are very nice. Too bad Chain isn't on either of them. AnimeCastle tells me that Volume One is on backorder, and I'm going to order the Lovers Only cd from them today (cause it has Chain. Great cue).
Ghost in the Shell is... well, unusual. I like it, though.
Incidentally, I'm going to pick up the Eva S2 set soon as well.

ENEMY AT THE GATES (James Horner). Why did I get this? Well, I like Horner (though I'm liking him less and less). Actually, it was one of those situations where I'd spent loads of money on vegetables at the supermarket, and there beside the beans was Enemy At The Gates, nothing else. So I got it. But I have to say that, with twelve Horner CDs in my collection, I think I've pretty much embraced his gamut, shall we say.
(By the way, I hated myself after this. To think I could have got something better for the same price just by pressing a few buttons on the old computer.)

With Lover's Only, you have basically the main cues that are worth having. However, the volume 1 disc, does have some extra tracks that make it an good pick up as well.

As for Ghost in the Shell, it is much like Akira to my ears, plain weird. However, that is part of the charm. I think I'll go and get this eventually, not at the moment though!

The EVA S2 box set is one big set of music, several hours of music on 6 CD'. I hope you have plenty of time to listen to it all!

It should all be great listening either way!

    Sean Robert Abbey

Sean: I actually already ordered Vol. 1 (when I ordered Vols. 2 and 3) but it's on backorder and hasn't come in yet.

GitS... A lot of it is underscore, but it really draws you in. The "Floating Museum" (battle with the tank) is superb. Other notable tracks are "Ghost City" and "Reincarnation." I didn't like opening, "Making Of A Cyborg" at first, but it's grown on me quite a bit. I have to recommend the CD. ****

As for Eva... I won an auction on Ebay yesterday for S2, Vox, Refrain, Day Of The Second Impact, Death, End Of Eva, Eva Vol.2, and Eva Vol.3. So yes, I guess I'll need a lot of time to listen to these.

The track you're referring to is "Deacon's Speech". I agree, its a highlight of the score..very triumphant choral piece with and incessant forward movement. It fits the scene where Dennis Hopper is giving his spiel to the Galley Slaves, while the Mariner(Kostner) creeps around the Hull of the tanker. Great score!

    Starship Troopers (Poledouris)

    Conan the Barbarian (Poledouris)
    Hollywood Heroes (Various)
    Hollywood War themes (various)
    Hollywood thrillers (various)
    Hollow Man (DVD isolated score)
