It's a major new Williams score. And from this it sounds like it could well be a goodie. They always like to nominate Williams if they can.

Well, if the music sounds as good of the teaser suggests then I wouldn't mind him being nominated yet again. Unlike with The Patriot...

Looks and sounds promising. But why the hell didn't they do anything to Harry's hair??

Interesting that the music is kept calm and mysterious, not the usual type of trailer music. Which is a good thing I guess.

I must say while I love fantasy (Draognlance forever!) that this movie intrigues me greatly. The trailer looks great, I must say the Owl/WB logo was cool but I almost had a heart attack when I saw "An AOL Time Warner Company."

At any rate, both film and music look and sound great; I will be seeing this one.

Looks like I get to be the dissenter here. And I just went and said this at Filmtracks, too.
The trailer itself doesn't make me want to see the film. Very bland looking, IMO, with very little of interest (unless you count many close-ups of people with oddly pointed noses and messy hair).
The music seems likewise bland and uninspired. Missing is the engaging, adventurous feel of the Hook trailer, and likewise missing are the memorable themes. The Harry Potter theme (if that even IS the theme) is aimless and rambling. There is little here to recommend the film or its score.
I can only hope future versions of the trailer will contain better music and more interesting scenes. Until then, I'll be listening to the Atlantis trailer.

    John,
Maybe your feelings toward the Williams theme echo my immediate reactions to previous Williams themes (such as Seven Years In Tibet, Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, and The Lost World). My initial reactions toward those themes left me slightly cold (or "overwarmed"), but upon repeated listens, each one of them sunk in. Now I love them all (I hate the Amistad score, but the theme is damn pleasant).
Anyway, I think that you should listen to this trailer music again, man. Imagine this theme with horns. It's great.

    Thanks Wedger!

    Quill and John Dunham...

Regarding your comments about the film itself, have either of you read the books? The only reason I ask is because I thought the teaser seemed to be tailored for people who were already fans of the series.

For instance, my whole family watched it together and we were excitedly making comments such as "Wow! look at the Great Hall!" and "That's Dumbledore!" and "Gringotts looks awesome!" and "Robbie Coltraine looks perfect as Hagrid," and "Was that Draco Malfoy?!" We all thought it was great, but at the same time I don't see much in the trailer that would appeal to people unfamiliar with the stories, settings and characters.

But I'm biased, anyway. In my opinion, if the film is even half as good as the book, it will be a masterpiece.

The music sounds great, just what I had hoped for and expected!

I too thought that about the tailoring of the trailer toward people who read.

Still, I don't think they should've even made an attempt at trying to capture the
book(s) on film. Of course, if Terry Gilliam were at the helm, I'd be whistling a different tune.

Hey, this trailer MADE me want to read the books! I had no intention on reading them but I have tried in the past and couldn't get through the first chapter! Cats that read, owls everwhere....hogwash!
BOOOOOOOOOOORING! Bring on Lord of The Rings anyday............

But after seeing this trailer, I said "WOW..maybe I should give it a good A+ boy-scout go" and I'm on page 90 now.

The book (first one..so far) is great, it's completely engrossing! I can't WAIT to see this film!

After the scene in the hut on top of the rock (The letter is hysterical.. "Harry Potter, The Floor, Hut on top of the rock, the sea" floored me!) I had to re-watch the trailer and when I did I was the same way..... Hagrid looks great, I love the woman playing the Headmistress (Can't remember if thats Dumbledoor..or whatever or Gangreane..whatever her name is..can't remember it).... but I was like a child in a candy store pointing out things. I actually had my 2 neices (Who are in love in Harry BTW) watch this and they were excited but I was just as excited to see it as they were!!!

First time in a LONG time that a movie trailer had me act this way!

The only other ones I can think of were the re-release of Star Wars Eps 4-6, Lord Of The Rings, and Jurassic Park!

    Oh well....thats my .61 cents.

    Peace out peeps

    - John

Keep reading - they get even better! #3 is my personal favourite, I think the 4th wasn't quite as good, although the climax surpasses the rest. But the one book where I sat the whole day reading the last 200 pages in a row was the third. (Though I read the others in a very short time, too).

(I DIG Tolkien and have read LOTR about 8 times so far - I'm going to read it again before the films come out. Potter is different, I don't think you can really compare the two, I'd rather compare Potter to Star Wars. But all are great)

    Ok, ok, I'll stop now.

NP: Harry Potter Trailer.mp3 - After playing it several times, I can't wait for the score. This is fantastic!

Scott and Jeron: My comments on the music were, obviously, restricted to the only music available. I did not say the score would be bad, nor did I attempt to comment on it. I was commenting ONLY on the two minutes in the trailer. (Which is NOT overshadowed by effects and dialogue. There are what, three lines in that trailer? The last minute or so of music doesn't even seem to have effects.)
As for themes, I usually like Williams themes right off the bat. Those you mentioned, and others (Black Sunday, which I just got, is a good example, as is The Witches Of Eastwick, which has a theme much better than the rest of the score). A few I dislike at once (like Rosewood, and um, Schindler's List :cringes: ).
But anyhow, back to Potter: I rewatched the trailer a couple of times. Movie still looks dull and uninteresting. Theme sounds a little better. Still bland, but perhaps if Williams adds a half dozen more themes and motifs and writes a truly epic score, it'll be okay.
And no, I haven't read the books, nor do I have any intention of doing so unless the movie is SO fantastic that I can't do otherwise. The rest of my family, all of whom have read the books, were also standing over my shoulder looking at the trailer and saying things like those already mentioned.
SO, in conclusion, I might see the film, if they release a more generally targeted trailer that appeals to me or if I grow to love Williams' theme. I might get the score, but only if I hear many clips and consider it **** or higher. Right now, the two minutes in the trailer is sitting at a solid ***.
As for STONING me, well, my middle name is Stephen.

It is important to note that this is a custom score for a trailer. It might not be fair to expect it to capsulate every musical idea of the score (the rest of which Williams will not even write until this summer).

Therefore, is this the Harry Potter theme? Maybe so, maybe not. Williams appears to have scored the trailer like an individual scene and it seems he has conveyed the appropriate spirit of the visuals and the forthcoming movie.

I think the material from the Hook trailer does pop up in the score to that movie, but not very prominently. Rumours for the Potter trailer were that Williams was going to write original music using the theme for the movie, though. At least the part that he was scoring the trailer turned out to be true.

BTW, did anyone notice a resemblance of the theme to Schindler's List? (and that sound effect near the end of the trailer sounds very much like a Star Wars sound effect - at least from the X-Wing Alliance game - to me).

Classic, vintage Williams. Based on the trailer, I have little doubts the score will be worthy of at least ****.4/*****

I hadn't noticed it before, but when I listened to it more analytically and played it over and over again in my head (and then played Schindler over and over again in my head) I do indeed hear a resemblance. Right!

BTW, the other score the theme reminds me of is of course Hook. But in style, it's most similiar to Witches of Eastwick I think - only better. I like Witches, but I don't think it's among his best.

I don't know if they're going to make film versions of the later Potter books after this first one (I hope!), but recently, I wondered that if they're going to do it, and if Williams is going to score them, how his scores can adpot the complexity of the books when - as we all know - Williams doesn't read scripts.

I'm delighted that I just found this at the John Williams Webpages:

    quote:
Contrary to his usual practice, Williams read the book on which the film was based and said he "loved it."

But the main reason for him to have her is because every wizard has a "pet" to deliver his/her letters. Of course she's also become his pet, but simply calling her a pet makes it sound as if he got her just for company.
