I just got done finishing Gremlins... What a film? Oh how I'd die for a movie with a heart like this to be released this day in age at theatres... The question is, what is next for Dante? On IMDB there is nothing to speak of. I didn't think Small Soldiers was quite as good as his others (Gremlins/2, the 'burbs), but does anybody have a clue? For the most part I love all of his work, and Goldsmith always seems to provide a pretty kicking score. Anyway peace.NP: Small Soldiers (Goldsmith) ***/*****

Dante's next project is called The Haunted Lighthouse, to the best of my knowledge, and is still in pre-production.Dan

Joe Dante is one of my favorite directors of the last 20 years. But sadly the majority of the moviegoing public does not seem to understand his style of filmmaking, and the movies are therefore not commercially successfull. So in the past 10 years his opportunities have been more limited in Hollywood.
Dante was actually attached to direct the film The 6th Day early in production.I can only imagine what the film could have been had Dante stayed with the project. He was also rumored to be one of the directors in the running to helm the upcoming The Phone Booth, before the job went to Joel Schumacher.
I just hope Dante gets the opportunity to direct more big Hollywood films, because he is truly one of the most underrated directors out there.

If you go to http://eborisk.dusted.net/ and click on "news" up at the top of the page, you'll get some stuff about his latest projects.

Perhaps Dante's big break will arrive when he finally drops the whole "kid happily riding through the neighborhood on his bike" title credit sequence.... Thanks for the link, PD!

Too bad all of the Dante/Goldsmith films get such crappy soundtrack releases. I really want Gremlins and The 'Burbs!
NP: Gremlins 2!

I agree with everybody here: Joe Dante is indeed a great filmmaker. What I like the most of him is the way he's able to put some quite subversive subtexts even on movies for kids.
That's what makes his movies so interesting, even the weak ones. Plus, he works with Jerry Goldsmith - a definitive proof of wisdom...

I basically agree with Andre, but I also find Dante has mellowed a bit too much for my tastes -- though he DID make some kickass movies ... THE HOWLING, GREMLINS 2 (far better than the first, I think, and easily the funniest movie of its year), and the delirious, underrated INNERSPACE. Can you fault a movie for having TOO MUCH imagination? Audiences did. Actually, on balance, most of his movies are pretty good, but only the three I mentioned above really seem to go for the stratosphere. (EXPLORERS might have, were it more coherent, but he seems to have learned his lesson from that one.)

Yeah, Gremlins 2 is much better than it's predecessor. I'm ashamed to say that aside from the two Gremlins, I think I haven't seen any of Dante's films. Just recently, I missed Innerspace on TV once again, damn.NP: Hector Berlioz: Les Troyens (Vickers, Veasey, Lindholm; Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Sir Colin Davis)

Joe Dante is the man...it's a shame that he's pretty much been in limbo for a while especially after 1993's Matinee which bombed at the box office, but it's indeed a gulity pleasure as well as Goldsmith's score. Small Soldiers was a techincal marvel but not the type of film that I would've love to have seen him make as his return to the big screen. He definetly deserves another big time shot. That would've been cool for him to have done The Sixth Day and I agree with Rocco, Gremlins 2 is in most ways better than the original mostly because it doesn't take itself seriously and that's was the best part of the movie. Will we see another Goldsmith/Dante collaboration, you betcha! Hopefully soon.

Gremlins 2 was awesome, I agree... However I don't think it was as good as the original!NP: Stargate (Arnold) ***/*****

Did ANYONE check out the soundtracks section? The "Small Soldiers" liner notes are unparalled! All he needs to do is work on his spelling and he's got my vote for an internship at Varese. Oh, how I wish they'd re-record the score with a foreign orchestra.
