    It's late. I'm upset. I can't sleep.

So, now that I got that out of the way...

When you drive...if you drive...what type of music do you listen to most. Is it the driving force of Zimmer? The unregular rythims of Goldsmith? The smooth pounding of Williams? The four notes of Horner? The excitement of Arnold?

Tell me, tell me...I wanna know.

...now if I could just sleep...but...ahhhhhhhh...teenagers...God's punishment to us all...

    I'm rambling, aren't I? Yep, I am...hmmm...

    Hi Scott,
Mostly the music of my idol, Miklos Rozsa, but my method of choosing what to play in the car, is to take at random, a selection of cds, record them to cassette tape, and play the tapes to death. I don't have a CD player in the car, cos it would cost too much, and I'm not really in favour of the idea anyway. And have had disquieting reports from friends who DO have in-car systems, of damage being how-so-ever caused to their CDs. But this raises another question too. Do YOU find it a distraction, having music playing while you're travelling? Are you for or against? Me? I HAVE to have music, don't like the silence, and actually find it an aid to concentration, particularly on long journeys.

I have a driver's license, but no car (I didn't drive a car since I made the license...). I'd guess listening to Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi could be pretty dangerous, though.

I usually use old compilation tapes, Poledouris's Nuclear Scam is a favourite when it comes on. Pat Metheny is also a driving pleasure.

    Why was 6 scared of 7?...because 7 8 9

Sorry about the lame joke Scotty, hope your not upset anymore

I've been making up a few "mix CDs" of my favorite film music to play in the car.

I just take my favorite tracks/track fragments and crossfade them together... I kinda feel like George Lucas!

Driving is my favorite way to listen to music- having an apartment doesn't really let you let loose on the stereo... I love making composer compilation cdr's to keep in the truck. Alan Silvestri is a great composer to listen too... when listening to a mix of his themes it makes such a great compilation. Zimmer is another great- I have this awesome cd which has:
    Peacemaker
    Thelma and Louise- desert chase
    Days of Thunder
    Chill Factor-end credits
    Rock
    Black Rain
    Green Card
    Power of One

and of course, nothing beats a great James Bond compilation... who doesn't like those driving disco chase rythms from FYEO??

I've always been partial to Goldsmith in the car. Nothing beats driving to great scores lke...
The Wind And The Lion (Lord Of The Rift, nuff said?)
    Capricorn One/Outland
The Challenge (the last 3 cues, you don't want to be in the car with me or on the road AROUND me...)
    Contract On Cherry Street
    Night Crossing
    Star Trek: The Motion Picture
And from Elmer Bernstein, Great Escape or Magnificent 7.
His River Crossing cue from Zulu Dawn. Mein Gott...
I also love driving to Dr. Rozsa's historical stuff, like Ben Hur, Julius Caesar, or Ivanhoe. My favorite Rozsa cue to drive to, by far, is still Fight For Calahara.

If you are at your wit's end, needing to unwind and not be jarred to death by something that would only fuel your anger, check out John Barry. I'd recommend his scores from:

    Across the Sea of Time
    Out of Africa
    High Road to China
    Somewhere in Time
    My Life

    and his non-film music album:

    The Beyondness of Things.

    Hey Jonathan,

first off, my system consists of copying the newest cds I get onto tape and listeing to them in the car , at least twice,(I drive a lot). I also make compilations of several cds. So, all in all I have like 20 tapes in the car that go through the loop. New ones get added all the time, others get retired until they find new life in a compilation. So, I really never know what music I am popping in, kinda keeps the suspense going, especially in LA traffic.

    Now on to your question,
I find music while travelling to be part of my survival stragety. I hate driving without music. Heck, when I fly, I take my scores with me. Sometimes, actually quite often, I play anything from N'Sync to Slipknot. That ususally occurs when I am taking my nieces and nephews from or to school or other places..like the zoo (wish they would stay there). After all, I do expose them to scores, but I don't want to them to wind up behind bars for killing their uncle (although, some of them are doing a good job trying). The 11 year one can now recognize James Newton Howard, knows when the Patriot is playing, love Mighty Joe Young and wanted to know a cd that wasn't even a score: Freedom by Michael W. Smith. The other 16 year old often asks me if I know a particular score...like the other day when he asked if I had Gladiator. He loves the score...(Andre, don't you dare say anything... ).

So, yes, it is essential for me. Let me put it actually this way...having no music is much more of a distraction to me. Besides, playing my scores loud and long, is one way to keep my aunts quite whenever I drive them around...because I am telling you...they can talk, and talk....

being upset, the last thing I wanna do when I get in my car is listen to John Barry. at home maybe, but not in the car.

we don't want Scott to go to sleep at the wheel.

when I'm in my car and mad at the world, which is often these days, I go with a U2 CD called Pop.
why? cause MOFO is somehow therapeutic, and gets out my aggression. Just crank that puppy up, and drive about 80 mph down I-15.

the rest of the songs are pretty good, too.

    Thanks Timmer,
I am still upset, but this will stay for a while, but I do appreciate the joke. I'll try it on my littel neph. The older ones will just look at me...I'm sure.

Being upset has nothing to do with this board by the way, it has to do with a family member. I just hope when these teenagers grow up and have their own kids, they get one just like them. I'll be laughing myself to sleep then...

You know, I really believe teenagers are a curse from the big Guy. I mean really, all logic and normalcy like goes right out the door. They wind up stupid for a few years, turn 20 something and somehow, somewhere use their brain again.

To the teenagers on this board...I am only talking about my kids. Not you guys. SO DON'T YELL AT ME!

Scott, you need upbeat music bro, I think that "Tarzan" should be said here too. That is the only CD that can get me in a better mood, EVER. Anytime I am down, I just press "Disc 1" on my head unit and on comes "Tarzan."

"Son of Man" is a great freeway song too.

Barry's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is one of my favorite trip cds and is good for a long drive. Also residing in my car right now is Arnold's SHAFT (2000) score, but you have to know somebody cool to get one of those.

Jeron is the charismatic young leader of the Branch Goldsmithian cult down in Arlen, TX, where they also film KING OF THE HILL.

Score-wise, I like Bernstein's "Magnificent Seven," and Safan's "Last Starfighter." Of course, "Danger Zone" from "Top Gun" is great to drive to.

Non-scores, I'll go with "Bat Out of Hell" by Meatloaf, or if I just want to cruise, "Legend" by Bob Marley.
