I think I need to keep my mouth shut. Anyway, I am listening to "Alien 3" and I must say, I am very impressed by it. In the past I have resented Goldenthal's music, I do believe that is because of the really bad experiences with "Sphere" and the two "Batman" films he did. And hearing "Alien 3" now, and I hope soon, when I get around to it, "Michael Collins," I am very impressed with the depth and thematic elements to his music.

To boil it all down, my outlook has changed. (Jeron I know your falling out of your chair right now.) And it is for the better. I think it is safe to say that I will pay Goldenthal with more then a deaf ear, and when "Final Fantasy" comes along, I hope and pray that Elliot will do a fine job, because I can tell you, that the score for the film will decide if I will ever listen to his new stuff again. I know that is a harsh thing to say, but I think you all know how much I am looking forward to this movie

    Let the countdown begin.

Brian, I recently got Alien 3 (in mp3, thank god =P) and have given it a few listens so far. It isn't easy, that's for sure. I realize that the majority of people are mixed with this score as it seems to be love or hate (many people I know call it a masterpiece, while almost every review I've read gives it a */*****)... Personally, I have yet to find out what it so darn special about it. Unlike many, I did enjoy the film (though it isn't in Alien(s) league), I just find the score to be an abundance of noise. The theme found in Lento and Adagio is brilliant (the last track is amazing alone, by far the best on the album), but outside of this I find it to be more or less a mess... Sucks for me =(

That's funny. I just wrote a long defense of Alien 3 this past week at the Filmtracks forum.

I think after understanding the score, you'll find that there's much more to it than merely "noise."

Elliot's score to TITUS is one of the greatest scores of all time in my opinion. If one doubts Elliot, listen to a few tracks off of TITUS and you will be forever changed. Some tracks are just Jazz though, for the film, so skip those. His best is the first song, and second to last. Those two tracks are freakin' amazing. Better than anything by Williams I think!

I'm having my problems with this one as well. I mean, Goldenthal is a mixed bag for me. I think the guy is incredibly talented, but his atonal stuff I just can't get into in the way I do with Goldsmith. I'm trying though. Especially since Aaron keeps telling me to. Hehehe.

Better than Williams? I don't think so.

Goldenthal is alot better than most other composers out there these days. It's a real shame though that he has wasted his time on some pretty bad movies. I would have loved to hear him score Hannibal.

If I'm not mistaken I read an interview with Jerry Goldsmith and he was asked about some of the younger composers. Goldenthal was one he had praise for.

His score to TITUS is better than most William's yes. Not that Elliot is better, just TITUS is better than most.

given the disjointedness of the film, Goldenthal's Alien 3 is a masterpiece.

this is a groundbreaking score if I may say so. I mean, sure, you have scary scores like Goldsmith's numerous ones from the 70s, but Alien 3 is so completely different in sound and style. First time I heard it, it scared me (ah, what an impressionable lad I was/ am). I think the orchestration/ instrumentation is phenomenal.

the review at amazon, reprinted from Videohound's Soundtracks is pretty much spot on with what I believe about the score.

Brian, you like Alien³ and DISlike Sphere? That's weird, I'd think Sphere is much easier to like.

I consider the Alien³ score (and yes, the movie, too) a masterpiece. I don't play the CD very often, though. For me, it's one of those scores that are best heard in the film (like Williams' The Fury - though that works very well on album, but still better in the film - and Goldsmith's Planet of the Apes).

Michael Collins is the only score I truly enjoy by Goldenthal...his Batman scores were serviceable, but he had a hard act to follow there.

I truly enjoy maybe three of four tracks from Alien3, but overall when I hear is music I get his strange picture of a demented madman, hair spiraling out like a chaotic maelstrom, eyebrows furrowing into a crazed V, while he howls and bangs on a piano!

Indeed I was. I'm hideous. That Alien 3 happened to be playing didn't help things.

I have to say that I recently saw Titus and, while I have always been partial to Goldenthal's music, this score reached new levels of power.

Titus was an instant classic, I think. Now I'm going to go buy the record...

The TITUS DVD is one of the best DVDs out there in every way. I own it and love it. Mainly because of the POWERFUL score and POWERFUL film, but the DVD presentation is great because it all has so much POWER.

Swashbuckler...you are right. TITUS is the only score I have heard for years upon years upon years that has been so damn powerful. I now claim TITUS to be the most powerful score ever made. It beats CONAN:THE BARARIAN and all of those other beasties! Please people, if you do in fact doubt Elliot...listen to song one and the second to last one, or just see the damn film . For anyone who loves powerful moving emotional scores, TITUS is a godsend!

    NP: TITUS of course
