Hans Zimmer has reportedly signed on to score the new Ridley Scott directed and Jerry Bruckheimer produced film entitled Black Hawk Down, due out later this year.

The film is about a rescue attempt by U.S. forces of two lieutenants trapped in Somalis.

I think the film needs to be rescued from the kinda score Zimmer is going to provide...

Actually, I am reading the book it is based on right now, and it is about the attempted "abduction" of two lieutenants of a Somali warlord by Army Rangers and Delta Force. The US soldiers then get pinned in Mogadishu by Somali forces. So far it is an excellent book. I think that Ridley Scott could make an excellent movie from the book. As with many movies made from books, probably a large amount of the personal descriptions of the different soldiers will have to be left out, which is a shame, because those are some of the best parts. Still, it could be a very good movie.

Actually, what happened was two sergeants dropped in to save the warrant office pilot stil alive at the crash site. The WO survived, protected by a Somali and the two sergeants were both killed when they ran out of ammo. Both were volunteers to go in and do that. Also, the people that came to rescue these had to kill around 1000 people and the Somalis were using women and kids as shields in the battle. Pretty cowardly. Best, John.

The book and TV doc on it were excellent. Score should be by someone else though.

I haven't read the book, but I just got done reading the exhaustive report that was done by the Philadelphia Inquirer that ended up spawning the novel.

It's quite an amazing story and I can't wait to see what Ridley Scott has in store for us, hopefully it won't be the schlocky 'popcorn entertainment' that most Jerry Bruckheimer films are subjected to complete with a 4/4 balls to the wall synthesised rock anthem score by Zimmer.

Here is the report for those intrested, be wary though it's quite a long read and took me a good portion of the night to get through.

Somalia, eh? This will give Zimmer a chance to return to the African style of scoring at which he excels, and which he hasn't really done since THE LION KING, if I remember right. Perhaps something like THE THIN RED LINE meets THE POWER OF ONE (still, along with BACKDRAFT, his best work in movies, I think). We'll see.
