This is silly, but what the hell. Just discovered a page devoted to the "Exotica" albums of Les Baxter. Follow this link, turn your volume up loud - and run your cursor across his name. I just spent the last fifteen minutes there, and my neighbours are very unhappy!

Les Baxter was great composer. Not only is that site fun to visit, it's a great place to become familiar with his music. He's a classic. Be sure to explore more than just the "silly" aspects. It's a whole new world waiting to be discovered... (cue Aladdin love song).

I was amazed how many albums (non-film) he's done. Great covers too! Most of the recordings aren't available, though, which is a great pity. And what's with the audio samples? All I get are huge text files!

Les Baxter was brilliant. I haven't heard any of his Exotica stuff yet, but some of his AIP scores verged on the exotic! Tom Scofield could have written volumes on the subject, but he seems to have gone forever. I wrote to Taylor White when I ordered my copy of Ronald Stein's Haunted Palace/ Premature Burial, and asked about the possibility of seeing a release of the phenomenal scores for Fall Of The House Of Usher and Pit And The Pendulum, but he was charmingly evasive (meaning he didn't mention them at all in his reply!)

Poor Les, he was really upset that people considered him as a cafe orchestra conductor with a violin under his arm. We all know that he was so much more!
