After many years of pondering, "Who the hell is my favorite composer!?" I have finally come to terms with myself.CARTER BURWELL is oficially my favorite composer. His scores with every Coen Bro.s film have always been above amazing. He has his own style, sound, feel. Every single Coen Bros film is done to perfection is every way, especially musically thanks to Burwell's amazing music. Carter, I am oficially your fan. WE ALL LOVE the "big" composers but I become tiresome of their same sound and feel every film a la Williams, Gold., you know, most everyone! They are greats, but Burwell is my favorite, and the best in my opinion, for his scores work the best with the films. I realized this after watching The Hudsucker Proxy on TV tonight for the umpteenth time. What a great film with a great score!

Good to see someone sticking up for Mr. Burwell, who's been one of my very favorites for years. He's certainly in my top 10, perhaps even the top 5. MILLER'S CROSSING remains my favorite film of the 1990s, and Burwell's score concomitantly one of my favorite scores from the same decade.Myself, though, the top position remains split between two very different composers: Jerry Goldsmith and Akira Ifukube.

do I even have to go into why I love Burwell's music?
No, this should be common knowledge by now.
Rob Roy was also on TV tonight.
USA Network I believe.
Good flick with a neat s-word fight at the end.
Burwell's magnificent, albeit repetitive, score more than holds its own with Braveheart and Far & Away, the other great Scottish/ Irish/ Celtic scores. I highly recommend the score CD which is rather inexpensive new.
The Robert and Mary theme is, or will be one day I believe, considered a classic.

I always loved the simple and haunting score to Blood Simple. ALL OF THE COEN BROS FILMS SCORED BY BURWELL ARE AMAZING. It is amazing that they ALL are amazing.

Hans Zimmer is my favorite composer, followed closely by John Williams. Most of my top 10 favorite scores happen to be from Zimmer (Days of Thunder, Gladiator, The Rock), which confirms him as my favorite.

So, we still need these released in some form:
Two Bits
Waterland
Mystery, Alaska
Kiss the Girls, rejected
Fear
It Could Happen to You, really needs to be expanded; sometimes very magical within the film.

Hallo,my favourite composer is Chris Young. He did some marvelous jobs in composing horror scores that at the same time can be absolutely beautiful and scary (think of Hellbound or Haunted Summer or The Dark Half and so on). Beside that he is very gifted in creating melodys I can´t forget (Murder in the First, Hurricane, Gift and so on.)

YES! Mr. Burwell is tops. You can't go wrong with him as a fav.
Incidentally, isn't Richard Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto used prominently in Hudsucker Proxy?

I haven't heard the Waraw Concerto, but I do know that Aram Khachaturian's music is used extensively. The Gayane ballet I think?

indeed there is. Burwell talks about wanting to buy it back from Paramount in that interview book called "Knowing the Score," which I found cheap at Borders a couple weeks ago. Apparently he is very proud of it.someone told me that there is a bootleg disc of it floating around, but I doubt it. Never seen anyone offering it for trades or anything.
Incidentally, at Borders []itoday[/i], I found a book of LP covers for soundtracks. Pretty nice book, and many were printed life size. I think someone named Saul Bass did it?
very interesting.NP -- King Kong, Steiner

Speaking of Burwell, is there a score release for Kalifornia? The suite in the songtrack release is kinda good.

I think it's the adagio from his Spartacus ballet. Also a brief bit of the Sabre Dance is incorporated. Nice score, regardless.

Would it be possible to compare Burwell to Howard Shore? I'm not too up on either of these composers, but their "dark" moments seem to me to share a certain something. Who is the more versatile in your opinion?

Burwell, hands down. He can write better themes and melodies.

oh pool boy,
I'll pretend you didn't say that.:-)
Personally, I think Howard Shore is the more versatile, but their styles, while dark and ominous at times, couldn't be more different.
It's like comparing Williams and Goldsmith.Shore's music is infused with a certain intellectualism and refinement that does not come out in Burwell's.
Not to knock Burwell. Burwell's music, if you listen closely, has a lot of simple, basic chords, just weirdly arranged in favor of the lower parts of the orchestra.
Shore uses a richer harmonic structure.but, hey. Both men write groovy scores for any genre.

JJ, I'd have to agree with you on this one. Shore is the more versatile of the two. I love Burwell's music all the same - but Shore has a ton of creative tricks up his sleeve... and he loves to use them. Also, Shore DOES write beautiful melodies. It's Unfortunately, he rarely gets the opportunity to show off his talent (in that area), as the films he is hired to work on don't require that kind of melodic ear candy.[Message edited by Jeron on 02-24-2001]
