Just wondering if anyone out there has pulled the isolated score off the DVD for this film. What scenes/sections are not included in the Varese reissue of a couple years ago?

    [Tracks would help!]

    Thanks.

A different question - I don't have the score album for 1941, and I hated the film (though I have seen it only once, years ago). Is the iso score worth getting the DVD?

The FILM is worth getting the DVD! The widescreen transfer really enhances the look and feel. In addition, you may not have seen the DVD version of the film, which is a longer cut. And THEN you have to take into account that the film may not be as funny for non-Americans. And even for many Americans the film's broadly manic comedy doesn't appeal to everyone.

Well anyway, I loved it. So I really can't say if it's worth the iso score for the price. I'd say it certainly is -- especially as the original tracks aren't on the official soundtrack and the iso score includes all the wonderful source music -- but you'd need to get an opinion from someone more objective.

This is probably a film which can be HEAVILY messed up by the German dub (which is the one I've seen), so maybe I should really watch it again.

Regarding the price - the difference between CD and DVD prices is so low, I usually prefer DVDs with Iso Scores to the CDs if the Iso Score track doesn't feature heavy cuts. (But at the time when I saw 1941, the score seemed to me to be mainly a repetition of the march)

Marian: it is MUCH more than that! The main march is, in fact, ONLY used for the character of Wild Bill Kelso. There are several additional themes, a ton of great source music, and some of Williams' most inventive scoring ever! Including the send-up of his "Jaws" opening. If the CD and DVD are similarly priced, forget about the underrepresentative album and go for the whole film. You can watch it in English, Spanish or French ... but you must understand that the English actors were VERY carefully chosen. Half the fun is listening to them talk! How could you translate the uber-distinct tones of Robert Stack or Slim Pickens into ANY other language? My recommendation: watch it with sub-titles. Perhaps a region 2 or 3 DVD edition comes with German subs.

In addition, the DVD is PACKED with extras ...a very long documentary, Spielberg's home movies, trailers, outtakes, storyboards, production photos, advertising, marketing and publicity materials. You get a lot for your dollar. Er ... deuschmark.

I've always preferred the film version of "Swing, Swing, Swing" to the album version. I think that the Varese disc does a decent job of representing the score (though having it complete is always welcome), it's just the different version of "Swing, Swing, Swing" that ticks me off. The film version just kicks.

Wedge, I believe the Jaws joke is the only one that works in the German dub.

I'll get the US release, as long as English subtitles are there, I have no problems (and I can also live without them, but sometimes it gets hard - I had to read Henry V to understand Branagh's film).
