I rented the MANHUNTER DVD last night for the first time and to my surprise it was a great film. Granted it was a tad over-stylish due to Mann's style, but that man is a fine filmmaker, so I loved it. All in all Manhunter is the most realistic film out of the three Harris novel adaptions. In Manhunter the "bad guys" are more realistic and believable than in Silence and Hannibal. Is that a good or bad thing? Well, who doesn't love Hopkins as the Cannibal...but I am very happy with (Crap I forgot the actor's name) as Lecter in Manhunter. In fact I migt say that he is even better than Hopkins since Hopkin's Lecter is a tad over the top(in a good way) while the original Lecter is a tad more believable and we never learn of his dinning habits...just that he killed many people brutally and screwed with Ghram's ego.

I guess in best to worst even though I LOVED ALL THREE FILMS here goes

    Best-Manhunter
It is more realistic and "smart" due to Mann's directing and Dante's photo eye. I now love the original Lecter. I find him creepier than Hopkins.

Next Best- Silence of The Lambs
Acting is superb. Direction is amazing. Score is outstanding but Manhunter has the more "realistic" edge. Still, Silence is a new classic that deserves the title amoungst the best.

    Next-Hannibal
Say what you wnat but I loved this film. I found Hopkins to be actually scary in this one while I found him just entertaining in the 2nd film. We all love him as the Cannibal even thougyh this film is out there.

    --CONCLUSION--

All three films are great. I should not compare Manhunter and Silence since they are very differnet in every way except a few, so my conclusion is that all three are great films, either for entertainment value or for a dive into the dark side of the human mind/soul/brain/whatever.

I too find MANHUNTER the better movie.
The actor playing Dr. Lektor is Brian Cox.
And the DVD has a great Widescreen print, finally !!!!!

Ok, so much for the film.

What about the score? How do they compare with each other?

    Scottminds want to know.

Manhunter does not have much of a score. It mainly has synth(which works) and 80s songs(which work). Silence has the better score than Manhunter, but hunter does not really have a score. Silence has the better score than Hannibal as well even though I love the score to that also.

I'll weigh in with my vote for "Manhunter," too. Boy, that Lecter fellow really screwed with people's minds. I've always held my opinion because everybody seemed to like "Silence" better. Glad I can finally come out of the closet.

Regarding the music in "Manhunter" -- very "Miami Vice"-ish. My favorite musical part is the climatic scene at the end in which "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is played.

    Cool.

I saw Manhunter on UK TV the other night and also liked the climactic music. Is it by Iron Butterfly? The credits were tough to read.

Yep, Iron Butterfly. I saw them play Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida live in a concert in Dallas. I think I can still play the drum solo.

Thanks, Marc. Tomorrow I'll be scouring the CD shops for the album it appears on.

Any word on a CD release for MANHUNTER? Or has anyone booted it?
I would love to have this one, since my cassette is almost dead now

Michel Rubini's GRAHAM'S THEME still brings a tear to my eye, although it plays better on album than it's usage in the film.

    Best,
    Sean

Here's some info, OHM. This guy made himself a CD-R, I don't know if he's trading:

    http://website.lineone.net/~manhunter/soundtrack.html

http://www.manhunter.net/soundtrack/soundtrack.htm [section appears to be removed]

Every week MM gets emails from people wanting this soundtrack on CD, even moreso now that Hannibal has come out. Rhino needs to release this one, just as they did The Cutting Edge. A lot of endless email would stop!

    Stephen,

If you haven't left yet, Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida was the name of the alblum. On vinyl, it takes up one whole side of the record.

Thanks (again) Marc. My local shops are a bit naff, so not surprisingly they didn't have it in stock. I can pick it up by mail order a little cheaper anyway.

    Hee hee hee.

Back on-topic, I was really underwhelmed by Manhunter when I first saw it a couple of years back. Watching it this week I really liked it a lot more, but I still prefer Silence though. And why no Oscar for Shore? One of the things I didn't like in Manhunter was the songs - excepting the final shoot-out, which was quite cool. The last bit on the beach is simply horrible IMO.
Haven't been to see Hannibal yet (but definitely will).

I thought it was truer in spirit to Thomas Harris' novel, except...

Michael Mann trashes Harris' great ending and replaces it with a leftover final act out of a Miami Vice episode.

How did Harris end the novel?
