A while back, there was a "disagreement" regarding whether or not a certain score, written by 10 people (give or take 7), could be nominated for an Academy Award. I posted the eligibility rules for submission, but I don't remember anyone "seeing the light". The Mighty Ford posted this link (surprise, surprise) at another forum (oh, OK---it was FILMUS-L), so I thought that in light of all of this new sh*t, we'd read it again:

Only the principal composer(s) or song writer(s) responsible for the conception and execution of the work as a whole shall be eligible for an award. This expressly excludes from eligibility all of the following:

    supervisors (rude interruption #1: phew!)

partial contributors (e.g., any writer not responsible for the over-all design of the work)

    contributors working on speculation

scores diluted by the use of tracked or pre-existing music (rude interruption #2: I guess this rule wasn't in effect when Titanic and The Full Monty were nominated and won the awards)

scores diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs (rude interruption #3: I guess this rule wasn't in effect when The Full Monty was nominated and won the award)

scores assembled from the music of more than one composer.

Rude Summation: I took that last thing to mean that Gladiator (with Zimmer, Gerrard, Badelt, Holst, Rabin, Wagner, Glennie-Smith, Gregson-Williams, Fawcett-Majors, Powell, and Zimmer all contributing 14 seconds of music each) and Chicken Run (Powell/Gregson-Williams, etc.) couldn't be nominated.

What does everyone else make of this? If Gladiator can't be nominated, thank the Lord. If Chicken Run can't be nominated, it's more frustrating. There's a good score in there, but why can't one of the men just take a damned holiday and let the other write the score? Damned "Buddy Scoring"!

    Anyway..........discuss.

    Shaun

    Gladiator will be nominated.

The rules are vauge enough that any score, even a multi-composed MV score can be nominated as long as one person can be the focal point as the composer. Hans Zimmer is the only one on Gladiator who is eligible as a composer (and Lisa Gerrad might be elgible as a song writer?)

Gladiator will be nominated because there is powerful marketing muscle behind it, from the Studio all the way to media ventures. Say what you will about his music, (you will anyway) but Hans Zimmer understands the way the system works and he has no qualms about doing what it takes to get nominated and if nominated will do whatever he can to win.

Do you suppose that it is coincidence that the second volume of Gladiator music is becoming available just in time for the Oscars?

yeah, but isn't the screen credit in Gladiator given to both Zimmer and Gerrard?

that should theoretically make it ineligible.

It is my understanding that Gerrard is only given credit due to her vocals. Her compositions consist of the vocals themselves.

Well, when I read Music by Lisa Gerrard, I think, "Hmmm, Lisa Gerrard wrote some music for this movie." If it said, "Moaning by Lisa Gerrard", I'd think, "This is my kind of album!"

You could interpret the rules so that the only eligible party is "the principal composer(s) or song writer(s) responsible for the conception and execution of the work as a whole shall be eligible for an award."

Basically, this could mean that only the principle composer is eligible. Shag all the rest.

It specifically Excludes: Partial Contibutors, Supervisors,Temp Tracks, Song Tracks, Scores assembled from Classical Music (I am guessing that they mean note for note, not stylistic cribs)

Gladiator, despite how many people may have worked on it is still credited to Zimmer as the primary composer.

To me, these rules say who isn't eligible, not what scores aren't elgible.

The Academy already has deemed GLADIATOR Eligible for the award.

At the moment it's odds on favorite to win.

It's always amusing to see you talk about things you haven't a clue about.

    Regards,
    Ford A. Thaxton

Isn't it hilarious, man? The way I read the rule (I already wrote this), I looked at it as meaning that because Gladiator had 79 composers (with Lisa Gerrard retaining main on-screen credit), it couldn't be credited.

We are about to have virtually the same argument that we had last year, Ford. I'm reading the rule as it's written. And according to the Academy's official list for eligibility (posted by Jonathan Broxton at Filmtracks), Fantasia 2000 is also just as likely to get a nomination as Gladiator. I would think that Fantasia 2000 in particular would go against quite a few of their rules.
Quit emailing me, Ford. You're a pain in the rear.

You guys still trying to figure out the Oscars prize?

Why bother? It is just a nasty popularity contest and an oportunity for the stars to use all those ludicrous dresses, made by drug-adicted fashion designers.

Does anyone have any doubt that the laughable GLADIATOR will win?

    Get real people...

Ford, you can continue to email me once you get a grasp on how to structure a sentence. Reread that first sentence of his and think how someone who could write a sentence like that is out there producing film music. If anything, Ford is showing us all that we don't have to have what is usually called "a functioning brain" to become a record producer.

I wonder if Ford realizes that the conclusion Shaun came to was based on what he read. Something posted by a certain record producer.

I have a master's degree, and I think I can read (that's what the school said anwyay), and I came up with the same conclusion.

according to the way it reads Gladiator can't be nominated.
Of course I realize that's not how the political machinery works. Rules are made to be broken after all, evidenced by the nominations announced this morning.

the two composers that ought to be nominated for Gladiator are Gustav Holst and Henryk Gorecki.

Oh... Didn't know that posting personal e-mails from someone who was banned from a message board because "he is a danger for the comunity" was fun. Isn't it illegal, in the first place??

Well, just let the guy start posting again and have fun with it, instead of blocking him and them copy and paste his personal e-mails...

Andre, do you need to be banned, too, so you can't defend yourself?

Let's see. Three weeks ago, you said you were never coming back. Now you are back, you've posted your obligatory "Hans Zimmer Sucks" thread (which I have no problems with), and you've gone wacka-nuts with all the rest of your posts, calling people all sorts of things, from slime traitor to pathetic. Obviously, this breaks the rules about being civil, and is completely unnecessary, unless all you want to do is stir up trouble. Andre, you are on your way out, and it won't be my choice. It's yours.

Be cool, dood. Calling everyone pathetic and stirring up trouble just to stir up trouble gets as old and as bald as Hans Zimmer and his music (to use your words).
