Less than 24 hours away from being disappointed? Less than 24 hours away from being vindicated? Less than 24 hours away from who cares?

Place your bets! Submit your lists below for what you think will be the five Oscar music nominees announced tomorrow morning.

    Here are mine:

    Gladiator
    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    Malena
    Erin Brockovich
    Billy Elliot

Scores I'd like to see nominated, let's call 'em the "wildcards":

    The Gift
    The Cell
    Quills
    Sunshine
    Traffic

    Using PeterK's choices:

I think Malena will be nominated, and, from what I've heard of it, should go all the way. But I'm afraid either Zimmer or Tan Dun stand a better chance of taking home the prize. I'm guessing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I also have a feeling Erin Brockovich and Billy Elliot will not make the list, but I don't know what will replace them.

Either way, I'm ready to be proven wrong.

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    Billy Elliot
    Malena
    Chocolat
    Gladiator

Scores I wish would be nominated, but am sure they won't:

    Dinosaur
    What Lies Beneath
    Family Man
    Unbreakable
    Bounce

Well the scores I would like to see nominated won't be and the scores that aren't any good will probably get nominated.

The K's choices are as likely as any, although I'd expect THE PATRIOT to be nominated over MALENA.

I didn't see or hear enough last year to make anything like a comprehensive list, but I suppose I'd pick the following:

    HOWARD SHORE, “The Cell”
JOHN POWELL, HARRY GREGSON-WILLIAMS, “Chicken Run”
    JERRY GOLDSMITH, “Hollow Man”
    ENNIO MORRICONE, “Mission To Mars”
    JOHN WILLIAMS, “The Patriot”

Except for THE CELL, though, and CHICKEN RUN, which is definitely growing on me, I don't feel terribly amped about these picks.

Of my choices Crouching Tiger and Unbrekable are probably the only ones that'll get nominated. Although I will hope (futilly?) for Shore's The Cell.

I won't like it, but seeing as Gladiator is inexplicabally (to me anyway) gaining steam in the Oscar race as early as it is, Zimmer might just win it. Even though Tan Dun, James Newton Howard or Howard Shore deserve it much better.

On Oscar night, I will be rooting for Tan Dun, cause I love "Night Fight" and "To the South"

If Tan Dun is nominated, I'm pretty sure he'll win, as he'll represent the "classy" vote, as John Corigliano did for THE RED VIOLIN (not that I think Corigliano didn't deserve the award). Additionally, CROUCHING TIGER is one of those movies everybody seems to love. I hope to see it tonight or tomorrow.

But in the event of a GLADIATOR sweep, which seems to me bizarre but increasingly possible ... well ... we'll have a better idea this time tomorrow. It's liable to clean up in the tech categories.

Haven't heard all the possible nominees, but James Newton Howard's "Dinosaur" sure deserves a nod (see my other thread below).
I haven't enjoyed a score this much in a long, long time.

As for "Gladiator," my guess it will be nominated on the power of the film, not because the score deserves it (which, IMHO, it does not).

Posted the exact same thing at Filmtracks, but here goes:

I'm making two sets of predictions. One that goes by one composer to a film. Another that contains Media Ventures clones. These don't necessarily reflect what I think are the best scores of the year, just what I think the Academy will recognize.

    1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    2. Chocolat
    3. The Patriot
    4. Dinosaur
    5. Cast Away (alternate would be Sunshine)

If Media Ventures has their way....
    1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    2. Chocolat
    3. Dinosaur
    4. Gladiator
    5. The Patriot (alternate: Chicken Run)

As good a bunch of guesses as any, Shaun -- except I don't think the Academy will recognize DINOSAUR. I'd put GLADIATOR in that space. Not that I care, but as I said, GLADIATOR looks likely to sweep the tech nominees, and the album probably sold a lot better than DINOSAUR, and that seems to have a lot to do with how these decisions are made nowadays.

CHOCOLAT is a good bet for a nomination, probably much more likely than MALENA. And if the Comedy Score category still existed, I'm sure CHICKEN RUN would be up there.

oh well, it's mere hours till we know ...

I bet there will be a Jarre (Sunshine) or Morricone (Malena/Vatel) score in the bunch, and "Chocolat" might have a nod because of the Golden Globes.

    My bets:
    1. Chocolat
    2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    3. Gladiator
    4. Malena
    5. The Patriot

    Long Shots:
    1. Chicken Run
    2. Dinosaur
    3. Unbreakable
    4. Sunshine

Real Long Shot but deserves it!
    1. Titus (1999) [had a limited release and came out in January--like anyone will remember]

The most "original" of the lot is probably the Tan Dun score. "Chicken Run" really fit the film wonderfully and deserves a nomination! The rest revisit the composer's styles or rehash old models.

    Gladiator
    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    Chocolat
    Sunshine
    Erin Brokovich*

*or otherwise: The Patriot, Quills, All The Pretty Horses, Traffic (as if), Autumn In New York, Dinosaur. Maybe Unbreakable, but I dont think the Academy will be as nice to the M Night Whatever team as they were last year, given his arrogance.

The winner will be Gladiator, if nominated, or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
As if the academy wouldn't nominate Gladiator, given its wide release and the fact that so many non-score owners love it and know not what MV is. But then again, the Golden Globes, in awarding/nominating certain scores in the last few years, give a pretty good indication of what won't be awarded come Oscar time - Truman Show, Legend of 1900, Insider, and the other 8 (?) nominations last year.

Somehow I don't think Cast Away has a shadow of a chance, given that there was one track of music in the film.

That's 2 years in a row that I've managed to pick them correctly...hehehehe....and I think last year's thread about who would win, I was one of the first to predict Corigliano's "The Red Violin". Send your checks...lol
