The newly reconstructed Director's Version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture is soon coming on DVD, and its director, Robert Wise, has been talking about it.

While talking to the Los Angeles New Times Wise spoke of his dissatisfaction as well as his newfound acceptance with the film, saying, "At the time I made it, I was pretty unhappy. There were some unfortunate things going on. We had problems with the script -- we were rewriting the script all the way through -- and I got along well with the actors, but it was not one of my happiest experiences, so I always had a bit of a downer on it. There were so many things taken out I don't think should have been taken out, so when I had a chance to go back belatedly and put some of those scenes back in, that made me much happier about the film. With all my other films, everything went fine -- I got my cut on them and got along with the studios. This is the only one I had this experience with."

Wise participated in the creation of the upcoming newly wrought version of the film, which uses newly created CG material as well as carefully recutting the film to bring in previous cut footage as well as snipping out redundant material. After finally seeing the new version, Wise said, "When I did West Side Story, we screened it for the cast and crew before we took it to the Midwest for a couple of sneak previews. I'll never forget, Sam Goldwyn and his wife were there, and Mrs. Goldwyn said to me after the showing, "The minute I sat down in the theater, I wasn't in that theater. I was in that film, all the way through it.' That's the greatest compliment you can pay any film. It grabs the audience from the very beginning and never lets them go. They forget they're looking at a film. That's what you try for. And I've finally done that with Star Trek."
    end of article

Thats a bit hard for me to swallow but it would be nice to see that huh?

If they cut out the "redundant" stuff...where does that leave Goldsmith's music??? Like when Scotty and Kirk take that LONG LONG trip around the Enterprise the first time?

Would it be a bad move to rerelease the film in the theatre like with the Exorcist or the upcoming rerelease of Superman:The Movie???

    Is it still rated "G"???

    Hmmm?

    Curiouser and curiouser

    What a great article!!!

You know though, I wonder if the original will be released on DVD as well. It would be great but I doubt it.

Why did I post this stuff to the "Just Movies" forum yesterday, if it doesn't get read and someone else posts it here?

I like the exposure that this has and besides, this DVD release REALLY (imho) touches on Goldsmith's score more than we may realize....yet.

The Star Trek:TMP has been re-rated by the MPAA as PG. I have no idea that that says about the new content! We will have to see. The bad thing about this release is that it is a Paramount Picture. We all know that they could have a few more extras on their dvds. An isolated score would be idea for them.

Aaron, I read that Paramount is giving Wise full control on this one, in which there WILL be a lot of extras. This is the Special Edition of the ST:TMP disc. It is also rumored that after this DVD is released, all the other Trek DVDs will be recieving a similar "SE" treatment. So don't waste your money on the ones that are currently available.

I'm gonna second what Jeron said.

I've only got Kahn, and that's because it's my favorite, and it's autographed by Kahn himself, Ricardo!

But I'm wondering something. When ST:TMP is done, will my original movie poster still be worth anything? It's signed by Robert Wise, after all.

I hope this is true! I've got the US Khan and the European DVDs for #7 to #9, because these have anamorphic transfers with superb image and sound quality (even if they don't have any extras, #7 doesn't even have a trailer). But not only does the upcoming European release of Undiscovered Country not have any extras (of course), this time they didn't even care to make an anamorphic transfer this time (and that for one of my favourite Trek movies). F*** Paramount!

Regerding playing ST:TMP on a big screen, I don't think it's likely. The Heartland Film Festival tried to get Mr. Wise to attend, and to screen this new edition of the film. He has attended the festival before, and is a native of Indiana, where it is held. The President of Heartland said that he was told that a screening would be impossible because the new effects were only being completed with enough resolution for DVD presentation. Cost, don't you know.

Technically hearsay, and given the time we have yet to wait (these arrangements were being attempted in September for late October) perhaps things have changed. If SUPERMAN hits and does well, maybe they will.

I read some more info about the rumoured Box today. Reportedly, these were officially confirmed, but don't sue ME if they're wrong.

    • The box will contain an empty space for Trek X
    • All movies will be remastered and 16:9 (which means anamorphic, I suppose)
    • ST-1 will DEFINITELY have Seamless Branching
    • ST-2 SHOULD have Seamless Branching
    • ST-4 SHOULD have Seamless Branching
    • ST 2 & 3 should have remastered sound
    • Paramount consider making DTS tracks for ST-7, 8, 9

I hope this is true. And I hope we don't have to wait too long for it...

    Marian,

As you know I was among the lucky Home Theater Forum members in LA last year. On our day at Paramount studios we asked about re-issues of the others, and it's basically a "not in the near future" situation. They dont believe in re-issuing discs so soon after they already put them out on the shelves. There won't be a box or DTS tracks, and last I heard TMP would be the new cut only.

Dan: Dammit. I want a decent Undiscovered Country!! (Thanks for the info, though )

"Seamless Branching" is the ability to "go in different directions" from one point of a movie on a DVD. E.g. Stigmata uses SB to let you choose between original and alternate ending. When watching the movie, you don't notice the change, therefore "seamless".

Paramount, being manufactured and distributed by Pioneer, who also own Dolby Labs, will probably not be putting a DTS track on any of their releases.

    From www.Cinescape.com

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (DVD): Rumours are flying that this much anticipated release has been put on hold. According to Trekweb it seems that the original camera negatives were damagd during the telecine process to lay down the film on digital tape. So what does this mean? Basically there'll be no new live action footage from the film in the new DVD, only segments garnered from the extended cut which aired on ABC in the mid-80s. One glaring omission - the famous 'Memory Wall' sequence for which the negative is still nice and intact, yet there's still no plans to include it. The new CG footage will be included and in fact the more graphically violent transporter room accident is the reason the DVD has been upgraded from G to PG. Theatrical re-release plans have also been canned. Thanks to 'Gustavo'
    End article

    DAMN!!!!!
