Guys! The specs for the ST:TMP DVD just were announced, and there is going to be a "A group commentary by Wise, special photographic effects director Douglas Trumbull, special photographic effects supervisor John Dykstra, music composer Jerry Goldsmith and actor Stephen Collins."
Cool! I can't wait for November!

Got to love Progression. Some may like to know that Paramount have now been considering re-visiting all the rest for SE treatment in the now not too distant future due to obvious demand in light of the response to those, then false, rumours earlier in the year.HTF has got another LA meet coming up next month. We've been invited to Paramount again to discuss their future projects, so I'll try and get as much info on these possible SEs as I can.

Thanks for that info Dan. I love hearing this stuff.it always amazes me (although it shouldn't, I guess) that the bigshots at Paramount (and other places) don't know what a huge fan base there is for certain things.
Sure, it might take a little extra money to put a SE together with lots of goodies, but it will sell. It's funy, but a guy I know here, when I told him about the TMP DVD and what was on it, immediately went out and bought a DVD player.
So the consumer base is there. It's just convincing the silly studio heads to approve making a good product.

From www.DARKHORIZONS.comStar Trek: The Motion Picture (DVD): Specific details of the upcoming DVD Director's Cut have been put out in a press release and here's the details: Disc One contains the new 136 minute version of the film presented in anamorphic 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 Surround. Along with it is an audio commentary by Director Robert Wise, FX Supervisors Douglas Trumbull and John Dykstra, composer Jerry Goldsmith and actor Stephen Collins. One rather different thing is a text based commentary by Trek-spert Michael Okuda. Disc Two has three new retrospective documentaries, the original teaser & trailer, the director's cut trailer, eight TV commercials, five scenes from the 1979 theatrical version cut out of this new version of the film, eleven deleted scenes restored in the ABC 1983 TV version, storyboards, outtakes and a promo for "Enterprise". The disc goes on sale in the US on November 6th.

And the news about this DVD made CNN.com. YOu can read the article.Bascially it says what has been mentioned here, but also somewhat echoes Dan's news that
quote:
Paramount senior VP of marketing Michael Arkin said that since the studio released standard DVD versions of the "Star Trek" movies in reverse order of their theatrical release, the studio is considering working its way back through the series in chronological order with special DVD editions of each.I'll say it again - I'm psyched!

Wow!!!!What a great disc.
Not really cleaned up in as much as its been filed down to not feel drawn out anymore.
Its still the best Star Trek score of all!!!!
A "better" version it is.
I might still have gone "Huh?" as a kid had I seen this version instead.......but oh well.
Worth the wait and you know what......I think I'll watch it again. I still gotta listen to Mr. Goldsmith talk on the othe tracks.
Go out and get it already!!!!!!!

It's pretty cool, Goldsmith is the first to speak on the commentary. The trailer music for TMP is from Black Sunday, in case anybody gives a crap.

Well, I picked up the disc last night and was quite impressed. Normally with these big DVD releases I watch all the extras first, then the film, but in this case I had to sit down and view this revised version from start to finish. The film certainly moves along at a brisker pace than before. I noticed in some scenes there were just short lines cut here and there. After they exit the wormhole, Chekov had stated "We're out of it", but now it just goes to Sulu's line. And some scenes have music that did not before, specifically two scenes with Ilia (when she help Chekov with is pain and slips on that headband as a probe).
The sound mix is great! Jerry's music just explodes in every scene! The blaster beam never sounded so threatening, in conjunction with the V'ger visuals. It made several sequences that much more gripping or moving. During the final "Meld" scene, those soaring string passages sound so rich and evocative. It's more memorable.
And I believe I read recently how they actually did use the music tracks from the recent CD release for certain scenes, due to the fact the on the original film the music and sound effects were on a single track together and could not separated out. The score sounds cleaner in this new cut as a result.
So, next up, I will take time for all the extras! Bring on the rest of the series!

OK, bad wording up there, I meant new music in the scene where Ilia helps Chekov with his pain (forgot the 'h') and also when she wears the headband (instead of 'slips on headband' which makes it sound like a banana peel incident). I should read through my posts better! Also, did anyone else notice the slight blurring effect in some shots. For instance, Spock's first entrance on the bridge, whenever the shot is on Kirk, there is a blur in the middle of the screen. I know I read something about this last week and for the life of me cannot remember where. It had something to do with fudging the ratio aspect for this DVD or something like that? Anyone else know?
What did everyone think of the new V'ger effects at the end, when the crew walks towards the central complex?
Also, were there any scenes that you wished had still been included? Do you think the DVD accomplishes Wise's new goal of presenting a more character-oriented film?

I can watch my widescreen VHS tape of the "un-directors' cut.
