Just received this through the eWire:

    quote:
On Saturday, February 10th, Duesseldorf's (Germany) METROPOL theater presents excerpts from Stanley Kubrik's 2001, scored with Alex North's unused original music. Due the partial work on this movie, there is no full score available.

I'm ashamed to say that I still haven't heard North's score (though the Goldsmith recording should be among my next purchases). But from everything I've read, it appears that North scored an entirely different cut of the film, as Kubrick re-cut the film to fit the classical pieces he used instead of the North score.

So, how are they going to show the film with the original score?

But as it seems this has to work some way - let's all hope for an inclusion of the North score in some future DVD release!

(BTW, 2001 is coming back to German cinemas in April or June, in a restored print - I hope to Austria, too)

I've synched North's score to a laserdisc playback of the film and actually for the "Dawn of Man" sequences and for the shuttle trip to the monolith, the North cues still fit to the cut of the film perfectly. Only in the space station and flight to the moon sequences does it not work.

I think it's a shame what Kubrick did to North. I think North's score deserved a better fate. If I'm not mistaken North only completed around 1/2 or 3/4 of the score before Kubrick told him the rest of the movie would have not include music only that damn breathing sound. I think the CD notes mention that. In my opinion the score is far better than the movie it was written for.

I think North got a srew job, too.

but Kubrick should have been more upfront about his musical intentions for the film, rather than let Mr North find out at the premier (according to the story I heard anyway).

You fellas are right about Kubrick. He lied to North from the start. All along he intended to use classical music to score the film, but to please the suits at M-G-M, he hired North to compose an original score.
    It was a coldhearted betrayal.
In my view, the absolutely 'perfect" 2001 would utilize both North's music, and a few classical pieces, like "The Blue Danube".
Kubrick could have made his film even better, if his ice-cold heart had been in the right place.

Hmmmmmm...........a few years back, I had synched up "Moon Rocket Bus" to the film and it worked OK. It's been a while, or else I'd post where I began the piece.

North's Main Title also synched perfectly with the opening title of the film, right down to the loud blast as the title of the film appeared onscreen.

I think only the Ligeti piece for the monolith works among the classical pieces. North's score helped give the scenes it was meant for the kind of narrative coherency that is so lacking in the film.

I agree about Ligeti, Eric, but I also find the Blue Danube to be irreplacable. Aside from those two selections, my opinion is that if you replace the rest with North's music, the movie is vastly improved.

BTW Chris, are you still in need of a laser dub of the restored "1776" or were you able to get that straightened out?
