Yikes! Ever since Prince Valiant came out, I've been meaning to place another order at FSM (I only have Poseidon Adventure so far).I have to get Valiant, the two Rosenman discs, all the Goldsmith westerns (though I haven't even heard most of the stuff I listed here), and now there's yet another disc. There's a huge order at the horizon, but I can't afford it at the moment.

I'm overcome with joy, here at my desk. 12-Mile Reef was my favorite of the "unreleased" Herrmann soundtracks; the suites previously released were SO tantalizing, but SO short. The harp pieces are the most glittering I've ever heard. And even though it appears to be a wretched movie, often I've flipped to the Fox Movie Channel just to listen to th underscore when the movie's playing.I'd had my fingers crossed for some time that FSM would pull this one out of their magic hat. I'm so thrilled, in fact, that out of sheer good will I ordered several other FSM releases that really hadn't juiced me earlier (Take a Hard Ride, etc.). But 12-Mile Reef will get the first and longest "airplay." Bravo!
[The above not to be construed as an endorsement of FSM over MM.com as a site from which to purchase soundtracks.]

I've never seen the film, but the clips FSM provided on their site are terrific. (I take it Herrmann reused portions of "The Fire" in JASON.) I'm a big fan of Herrmann's music, so I'll be sure to order this as soon as possible.Looks like I'll also need to find a copy of the film.

Rang,You can get the film(its nothing to write home about)at any local retailer on DVD...its a budget reissue, and I see it everywhere for about $6.
The Gerhardt RCA suite(on CITIZEN KANE)runs about 12mins, and is a fantastic preview...this is a major release! We are incredibly spoiled!

Thanks, Sean. I'll be sure to check that out. I can't argue with a price like that even if the film doesn't completely deliver the goods.

So what's next....WHITE WITCH DOCTOR?If only collectors could build up a grounswell of support for other composers, then it wouldn't just be the incredibly random Herrmann scores that get released. There's just something about Herrmann that has encouraged such a loud and supportive fan base--that's clearly why the labels seem to be tripping over themselves to issue new Herrmann recordings.
So what is it about Herrmann? Is it the fact that he produced (relative to Steiner or Newman or Waxman) fewer soundtracks, which means that more people would be willing to become Herrmann collectors? Or is it some quality germane to the music itself? I think it's a combination of both, but was wondering what others think.

Hats off to everyone at FSM.REEF was a weak film, to be sure, but Herrmann found something there that got his creative juices going.
If you're someone who thinks of Herrmann mainly in terms of his Hitchcock scores or the darker, more fantastic music he wrote, this will be a major revelation.
This is the Herrmann that put such wonderful lyricism into MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, GHOST & MRS. MUIR, andFAHRENHEIT 451.
Enjoy!
