I did a similar post about 6 - 7 months ago. Yesterday I picked up Dinosaur on DVD (2 disc set). So my wife, 3 year old boy and I watched it for the first time last night. Good movie, not what this post is about though.

Anyway, this morning I put the soundtrack for Dinosaur in the car. On the way to taking my boy to daycare, the music started and he said "UH!! This is Dinosaur!" Soooo cool. Makes me so proud. He's seen the movie once, and recognized the music from the first time hearing the soundtrack. Anyway, that's all.

I know the feeling. I took both my boys (six and three) for an outing to the hardware store Saturday.

The oldest immediately requested the "Conan the Barbarian" tape. When the "Anvil of Crom" part was playing, the youngest was nodding to the beat. When it was over, he said, "That was good, Daddy!"

P.S. They listen to "Dinosaur" and "Muppet Treasure Island" in the Mommy-mobile van.

My son used to hum Akira Ifukube's Godzilla theme whenever he was watching a movie and the big guy came on screen. Now my kids are both 13 and 11 and we still play movie music trivia. My daughter gets the upperhand on my son.

The next generation of film composers?

Marc, are there only songs on Muppet Treasure Island, or are also at least parts of the score included?

It is quite a feeling. Who knows if it'll last, but it's so cool. Hopefully hearing scores all of the time will carry on with him. He definately likes them.

    Marian:

"Muppet Treasure Island" has both songs and score. I don't know if it's a complete score, but it has ALL my favorite parts of the score. And the songs are great, too. It even has the "Boom Shaka-laka" chant.

Great! I'm not a Zimmer fan, but I have to get this one. (And usually, most of the Muppet songs are great. I've only seen the film in the German dub, which is horrible, with even more horrible songs, but I guess they're good in English)

I get the same thing from my 6-year-old sister. One time when she was 5 I started playing "Breakfast Machine" from Pee Wee's Big Adventure, a movie she had seen for the first time a week before (but I didn't know it then). As soon as it began, she said, "Hey, this sounds like when Pee Wee was making breakfast." Now it's not uncommon for me to intentionally start playing something she might know, and then I quiz her; usually, she gets it right.

One of the cutest (but unfortunately saddest) times she commented on film music was after we had watched The Rescuers Down Under. I left the credits rolling and she began dancing to the music, and then enthusiastically told me I should get the CD. When I had to explain to her that they didn't make it anymore, she started crying!

    Continuing the saga:

My kids, now 5 and 8, are now BIG fans of Danny Elfman -- with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" prominent in their universe.

It gets played in the car, at bedtime, before school, after school. They've even learned the words to the songs.

It's great. What's better is that the music is also great and I haven't tired of listening to it. (My wife, however, wouldn't say the same.)

It started when the 5-year-old picked up a children's book version of the story at the library. I mentioned that I had the music to the story and it took off from there.

At the risk of going off-topic, I also ended up tracking down and buying a "Special Edition" DVD of the movie. However, to keep it on-topic I will emphasize that they like listening to the soundtrack more than watching the movie.

Well, at least in the two years that's passed Disney has reissued Rescuers Down Under. I still bawl every time I see/hear The Black Hole, though...

Seeing this post shocked me. I saw my name and was like "What the hell is this". Well, my boy is almost 6 now, and still almost immediately tells me what soundtrack I'm listening too (if he's seen the movie) and what is happening during the music. Still awesome.

We can only hope for a generation of kids that appreciate film and tv scores.

With so many video games having orchastra scores maybe there will be a lot more of us in 5 or ten years.

I go with PeterK, thumbs waaaayyyyyyy up!

Back when I had napster I would download some random cues from scores I ahve never heard to see if the score was worth a purchase. Some cues I forgot to delete and one day years later I was refreashing myself in it by listening to a cue from Amazing Stories, from the official release and my cousin's daughter said she liked it.

My cousin I have tried to pull in a bit. Cause she liked "Scully's Theme" by Mark Snow and see enjoyed Moulin Rouge by Armstrong. Maybe one dya I can get her to my level of appreciation and she will have a bunch of film scores. I can only hope.

    SEBULBA:

It took me two WEEKS to find this thread and resurrect it. I thought, "Why start a new thread on the same subject?" Then it became an obsession. I was a little surprised at how long it had been, too. Especially when I have trouble remembering more important things.
