I was think bout something interesting to talk bout on this board and this is what I've come up with. Okay 2000, wasn't the greatest year for movies in general, but, but composers built up their portfolios and box office creditials this past year. Here's a list of winners and overachievers: (Remember this list is just based on money and not the quality of the music.)Winners:
James Horner (The Grinch, The Perfect Storm)
James Newton Howard (Dinosaur, Vertical Limit, and Unbreakable)
Alan Silvestri (What Women Want, Reindeer Games, What Lies Beneath and Castaway)
Michael Kamen (Frequency and The X-Men)
Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, The Road to El Dorado, Mission Impossible 2, and An Everlasting Piece)
John Williams (The Patriot)
Thomas Newman (Erin Brockovich and Pay It Foward)
David Newman (102 Dalmatians, The Klumps:Nutty Professor 2, The Flintstones:Viva Rock Vegas and Duets)
Randy Newman (Meet the Parents)
Trevor Rabin (Gone In 60 Seconds, The 6th Day and Remember the Titans)
Christopher Young (Bless the Child, The Big Kahuna, Wonderboys, and The Gift)
John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams (Chicken Run)Overachievers
The Hollow Man (Jerry Goldsmith)
Shaft (David Arnold)
Marc Shaiman (The Kid)
John Debney (Emperor's New Groove, The Replacements)
Lennie Niehaus (Space Cowboys)
David Kitay (Scary Movie, Dude, Where's My Car and Loser)
Howard Shore (The Cell, High Fidelity)
Mission To Mars (Ennio Morricone)
Mychael Danna (Bounce)
Danny Elfman (The Family Man and Proof of Life)
Rolfe Kent (Nurse Betty)
Carter Burwell (Hamlet, Blair Witch 2, Before Night Falls and O Brother, Where Art Thou?)
Mark Isham (Men of Honer and Rules of Engagement)
Thirteen Days (Trevor Jones)Underachievers
Marco Beltrami (Scream 3)
Mark Mancina (Bait)
Elmer Bernstein (Keeping the Faith)
Elia Cmiral (Battlefield Earth)
Randy Edelman (The Skulls, Whole Nine Yards, Passion of Mind)
Jan Kacemarek (Lost Souls)
Gabriel Yared (Autumn In New York)
let me know what you guys think of this. I'm sure you guys have some opinions bout this. after all money is everything lol.posted 01-25-2001 05:25 PM PT (US)

Ok, I am REALLY going to have to take issue with the placement of Randy Edelman in the "Underachievers" category....Though "The Whole Nine Yards" was something of a different approach for him, I still think that in addition to "Passion of Mind" (Have you actually listened to this??) and "Shanghai Noon", (which you carelessly omitted) all in the first half of 2000--I hardly think that relegates him to underachiever status. (The latter two being of *excellent* quality, not mere quantity.)

Ok....[cooling down, a bit]...going back and reading the *first* half of your posting, I think I will still say that Edelman must have done at least well.....(?) Still wouldn't relegate him to underachiever, no?

I didn't mention Shanghai Noon because that was a good score, but Edelman's other work was well really average. But I can sum this up in two words, THE SKULLS!!!!posted 01-25-2001 08:21 PM PT (US)

Read what i said at the top, this is mostly based on the financial successes of the movies they scored for NOT, I REPEAT NOT the quality of the score period.Overachiving means that those composers who scored those films overachived their films financial goals like David Kitay who I should've put in the winners catagory with Scary Movie.

Pete as far Beltrami goes, He really somewhat disappointed me in a way. Don't get me wrong I enjoy his music very much, but 2000 just wasn't his year. Okay I loved The Watcher, which is the most underrated film of the year and one for critics panned. And honestly is much better than most of the crap that did come out last year. Scream 3, I did enjoy but it's pretty much everything you've heard before with new themes and a little more balls. Crow:Salvation DIDN'T even get a theatrical release for some reason I guess it must be really bad then and I won't comment on Dracula 2000 but it looks like a major league bomb to me. And let's not get into Texas Rangers which got rejected. Beltrami will go on I granantee you Pete with even better projects.

Not certain what your standards are here. If anything I'd put Goldsmith in the "underachiever" category, at least as far as movies this year, since he only did ONE picture, HOLLOW MAN -- which was a modest financial success, too.

I hate to tell ya Rocco, but Hollow Man was surprisingly successful overseas where it's grossed over 100 million which is a total shock even to me because it's made bout 70 million here in the U.S. and now that the DVD and the video rentals are hot for this film they'll boost it even more. Funny how this business works. Will Battlefield Earth recoup it's cost through DVD, Video and rentals, Hell no. lol

I knew that, Mr. Target. However, by the same standards, if I'm understanding them, how does Trevor Jones count as an "overachiever" for 13 DAYS? The film is faltering considerably, at present, although I've little doubt it will at least break even. It's clear that I simply don't get the meaning of your categories.

Okay, if you'r talking about the quality of the films he's done, I concede your point about Beltrami. I really loved Scream 3, though. Thought it was the best of the series in lots of ways. Just a shame it wasn't very tense or scary.
