    O.K. Not really.

Some of you may have heard the name as one of the more well-known in contemporary Christian music. What you may not know, however, is that he has recently released an instrumental album called "Freedom."

I have to say that I really like this CD. It's quite thematic, and a few tracks center around the main "freedom" theme established in the first/title track. Anyway, the reason I attached the "film composer" tag to the subject is that, to listen to much of this CD, it does in fact sound like a film score. With the "freedom" theme, one might draw comparisons to "The Patriot," and similar, heroic-type, scores.

Even if you're not a fan of contemporary Christian music, I highly suggest that you at least give it a listen.

Awesome. I'm a fan of Michael W. Smith's work. Rockettown, baby! yeah! I'll have to check out this disc. As far as the film composer comments? Hmmmm... we'll have to see about that. Thanks for the post!

I know Smith regards composers like Horner and Williams highly. I recently read an article online about his new album, "Freedom," and in it he mentions recent soundtracks he's being listening to (ANGELA'S ASHES being one of them). I'm sorry I can't remember where I read the article, but if anyone is interested I can try and track it down for you.

And he has mentioned before that he'd be interested in writing a score for a film someday. Again, I've lost the source but I'm sure it would be easy enough to find for those interested.

My brother is a big fan of Smith's, so for his birthday last November I picked up "Freedom" for him. I had a chance to listen to the CD and thought it was mildly entertaining on the whole, but uneven. It lacked a certain vibrant energy and directness which Smith's music usually exudes in doses, instead sounding very watered-down. My brother was even a little disappointed in it, which surprised me. But it's an interesting experiment from Smith, who has wanted to do an instrumental album for quite a while.

(Curiously, the "Freedom" I purchased included a free CD of instrumental performances of what I think is some of Smith's past work, but this CD must have been a special bonus because not every "Freedom" CD contained it. S Smith, did you get this other CD?)

Nope. I didn't get the bonus CD. I had a heck of a time tracking it down in the stores though, so I ordered it online.

The very first Smitty CD I ever bought was Christmas, which I have listened to probably a thousand times, and I have also shared it with many other music lovers.
Christmas plays like a film score about Christmas, with interwoven themes and subtexts. It's a masterpiece.I'll Lead You Home remains my very favorite Michael W. Smith CD...the trilogy perfectly defines my heart's cry to my wife, and it's impossible for me to hear it without weeping.
Smith is a powerful worship leader as well. When he leads out, singing Oh God, You Are My God!, I am transported into heaven! And when he shouts, "Lift Him UP!", my spirit cries out, "YES!"

    I love the man...

...well now, ya' went and done it.

It's almost midnight, and I'm listening to Smitty's Cry For Love...

I may not get to sleep tonight!
