Lisa Gerrard's reaction would be attributed to being Australian (just like me!) and not really used to all the attention that the Golden Globes attracts. But that's my opinion anyway! Who knows why apart from her.

A complicated tune does not necessarily mean a good one. If you want proof of this, look at "Jaws". The theme is primarily made up of two notes and look at how effective it is.
Just becuase Zimmer doesn't write music in 9/7 time this doesn't make him any less a composer than John Williams.
Whether or not you like his melodies doesn't matter, because he is a film composer and the question you should be asking isn't "do I want to buy this score on CD because of it's originality and how much I like the themes" but "is this enhancing the film and it's content."
Zimmer isn't exactly hard-up for work which leads me to believe that both film makers and the public react in a positive way to his music.
Zimmer's music seems to always suit the film perfectly IMHO (with the exception of M:I 2 which was way out of place) and so in that reguard, he is a talented musician.
He's been scoring films for almost 20years, so I guess he can't be too bad at what he does.
If he fiddles with melodies on a sampler, then he must be writing the melodies that work with the tone colour of the instrument he has sampled.
Elmer Bernstenin once said...
"...good film music isn't about playing a series of tunes, its about creating atmosphere, manipulating the emotions of the audiance...".

As for the Elfman interview, I haven't seen it, I only know the story. All I'm saying is that just because you use orchestrators or happen to create a melody in your head instead of on a piano, this doesn't mean that you are not a real composer.
I don't think these "Zimmer is not a real composer" posting have anything to do with anything aside from the fact you don't like Hans Zimmer and you don't think its fair someone you don't like should win an award.
Boo hoo hoo!

I agree 100% Richard. I think the people(person) who are bashing Zimmer don't quite know all the facts. Zimmer was a classically trained musician during the course of his childhood before he entered the rock world. And although he might not have known much about film scoring and the orchestra after he enetered the film scoring industry, people like Shirley Walker took him under her wing and taught him all the essentials that he needed to know. Like Danny Elfman, he's come a long way over the course of 15-20 years.

My hearty congratulations go to Hans Zimmer (MCMS) for winning his Golden Globe award. It is always immensely gratifying when a skilled, innovative, versatile, imaginative, successful and accomplished leader of his profession is honoured in this way. I was similarly thrilled when James Horner won his Oscar for TITANIC.
Considering Media Ventures was conceived during Zimmer’s time in England, one hopes that Zimmer will one day be made a Knight of the British Empire for ‘services to cinema, the progression of the art of film composing and the further sophistication and enrichment of popular culture’.

I don't really think that's a reason to be knighted.... Heck, even Spielberg's knighting is somewhat silly.....Dan

Mr. 2 recently printed an exhaustive list of honors the British government gave to persons from all walks of life ... this might not be as far-fetched as it sounds. Why not John Scott, though, who's been at it for much longer, or John Barry obviously, or even Michael Kamen, who actually resides in London?

I'd rather be knighted than snookered, myself. Those cueballs don't give much.

Being snookered also beats being run over by a truck, or so I've heard.

Does this sort of thread HAVE to happen every time Zimmer is mentioned?!!!

I don't know. Interesting hypothesis, though. Shall we test it? I may go mention 'Zimmer' in random threads and see what happens.

Nice job Richard...I really enjoyed re-reading this thread.Question - do you have to dig through all the threads now that the search function has gone?

I'm not sure, maybe. There was a link to this thread on another topic. If I recall correctly, at the time, a link to this page was posted frequently and in non-related subjects."I have to remember. It helps me to remember."
