Believe it or not, I really hate coming to this board to post negative stuff. Down on re-records, down on the way the site's run, down on Horner & Zimmer, etc. etc. etc.So, I'm thrilled when I can come here and actually say something good about something or someone.
This time, the thumbs up goes to The Plague of the Zombies (of all things), but first some back story:
I walked into the local Media Play and found they had a $.99 video remainders section!
And what was currently on it? Vidoes from the Hammer Collection (for a buck!). They had Four-Sided Triangle, which I had already bought at a higher price to hear it's great Malcolm Arnold score. They had The Witches with a score by Richard Rodney Bennett. And they had The Plague of the Zombies with a score by James Bernard. So I bought these last two.
As a film, Plague is OK, I like the cast, but the plot's kind of been there done that. Still, with Plague's score, James Bernard hits the mark again.
GDI hasn't issued this one completely yet, but let's hope. As much as I like the Dracula motif, it's nice to have a Bernard score that doesn't include it for a change--just lots of percussion (even voodoo drums!)and tense swirling strings.
And it seemed that of the 90 minute film, at least 60 minutes were scored.
And like I said, all for a buck at Media Play.
The film's entire sound mix will fit onto a 90 minute cassette, so I figure I'll play that until GDI comes around to issuing this.
I haven't watched The Witches yet, but hopefully it'll be a find as well. Speaking of which, has anyone picked up the new Chandos recording of RRB scores?

Lou, Just thought you'd be interested in this quote from a few weeks ago by myself in the "Just Movies" James Bernard post."I always remember the music in the "dream" sequence of "Plague of the Zombies". What a brilliantly atmospheric piece of film-scoring...that scene is still eerie to watch. The music starts with an ostinato bass figure ( a precursor to "Jaws" perhaps?) and continues building up the tension with sporadic stabbs of dissonant brass chords. So simple and yet so complex and powerful at the same time. A great moment of music/film working succesfully in unison. Does anyone remember the scene and agree?" Gae

Thumbs up for Plague Of The Zombies! I haven't seen it in years but the score has stayed with me more or less (can't be specific about the bit you mention though, Gae). GDI's Main Title on the second of their compilations sounds distant and muffled, so if the rest of the score is in such a bad state I imagine that there won't be a full score release. Pity.

Yes! Plague of the Zombies is well wicked. I found it recently at Blockbuster in the sale for £2.98, which I thought was a bargain - but compared to $.99? I really love this score too, & would definately love to see a full release of it.
Incidentally, we showed it last term at our Uni's Film Society (at my suggestion), & it was really great to see it on the big screen. The dream sequence was really excellent that way. Unfortunately, though, the print they had was a black & white one. I really don't know why that was.np The Omen

I love the Bernard scores and all the hammer

I just had the suite on the CNA album
"Horrors of the black museum".
Is good that the British people is preserving this scores.
Is excelent music.
THere should be also a label to release scores for TV british series such
The Saint, The Professionals, The Champions
and so on...
All are in my wish list.
Until then, we have the videos and re runs...posted 01-27-2001 08:18 PM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
