I'm trying to "discover" more of Elmer Bernstein's music. My current collection looks like this:

    Age of Innocence, The
    Concerto for Guitar
Deep End of the Ocean, The
    Good Son, The
    Great Escape, The
    Grifters, The
    Hoodlum
    Last Man Standing
    Magnificent Seven, The
    Return of the Magnificent Seven
    Spies Like Us
    Ten Commandments, The
    To Kill a Mockingbird
    Wild Wild West

It's a decent collection, though I know the man has composed more that just what I own. Heck, he's done over 200 motion pictures. What's available? What's a must-have? What are your favorites? and why?

    Jeron

PS - Oh and before you say it: Heavy Metal is on my list! I know how great it is!

Admittedly, my only Bernstein score so far is Magnificient Seven (the Sedares recording, coupled with the Hallelujah Trail ouverture).

A must-have for me is his Oscar score, mainly based on Rossini's Barber of Seville.

There's a CD from the German semi-boot label Tsunami. I nearly picked it up once, but didn't in the end, and now I can't find it anymore.

    My top 5:

Heavy Metal - great epic fantasy music
The Black Cauldron - incredibly dark score for a Disney cartoon
Marie Ward - also known as The Black Cauldron 2, musically to me at least!
Airplane - due to the parodies he does of other scores, not to mention the music that's not parodied is quite impressive for a comedy
Ghostbusters - another somewhat dark score for yet another comedy

    Honorable mention:
Stripes - yet another comedy score which doesn't seem like one away from the film

Zulu Dawn is also one of mine. Great score. Several really great cues on there. Also, just about anything else I don't have, which is around 25 CDs. Best, John.

Bernstein is one of my favs.

A lot of scores I like by him, like Men in War, Where's Jack?, Some Came Running, etc. are only available on OOP LPs or CDs.

Given what you already have and what's available I suggest these:

The Rainmaker (recent Coppola film, not to be confused with 50s film scored by Alex North)

    The Commancheros

Bernstein by Bernstein on Denon Records--these are re-recorded suites of the key scores, including Heavy Metal and Hawaii.

House: After 5 Years of Living--the absolutely great music from this short is available on 2 different CDs:
The Midas Run/House/The Night Visitor on Citadel records
The Films of Charles and Ray Eames Volume One on Amber records (Bernstein's own record label)

Summer and Smoke--this was reissued in Spain not long ago and you might be able to find a copy of it somewhere

Lastly, despite the thumbs up from both Rocco and JJH, I'm not as big a fan of From The Terrace as they are.

I love all of Bernstein’s western scores. One very similar to
Magnificent Seven is Sons of Katie Elder. Really a fine score.
Also like Amazing Grace and Chuck. (And all the others listed above.)

    Not Available to my knowledge:
I enjoy the main melody to Love With a Proper Stranger. I was going
to turn off an old 50’s soap opera movie tonight until the narrator mentioned the
music was by Elmer Bernstein, so I watched about 15 minutes of it before
we had to leave. The movie was By Love Possessed, and the music was
    gorgeous.

Hey, I'm a contrarian--you don't want to agree with me. And I didn't say From The Terrace was bad, just not as great to me as it was to you. I thought the waltz theme was a turn off (even if appropriate for the character) and the other love theme nice but ordinary. All the best music comes when neither of those themes are playing. I think IMHO that Jeron could pick up better EB scores first.

Joan--I'm kicking myself for not taping this tonight. I'm fond of the Sturges-Bernstein collaborations on Mag 7, Girl Named Tamiko, Great Escape, and H. Trail and this is one I've never seen or heard (I was going to record it, got distracted, and the film had already started before I realized).

I wish the sound quality was a little better on the CD. I would love for Elmer to put this out on his label. Along with a CD of his cheesy sci fi work from the 80's, titles like...
    Slipstream
    Spacehunter
    Saturn 3
    Go, Elmer!

The sound quality of the ZULU DAWN Lp was not that great either. It also was missing one of my favorite cues -- where the Zulu scouts are moving through the high ground above the river crossing, then one of them fires his gun and asks why they have come to the land of the Zulus. I don't think this cue was on the CD either.

I already have two of Bernstein's rarer titles: Genocide and Bernstein by Bernstein.
