I'm feeling quite pleased with myself. Until recently I seem to have been just buying loats of albums by the same composers - Goldsmith, Williams, Elfman etc, but within the last six months or so, I have branched out loads by getting my first albums by all these composers:
Craig Armstrong (Best Laid Plans, Plunkett & Macleane),
    Mark Ayres (The Innocent Sleep),
    Simon Boswell (Shallow Grave),
    Bill Conti (FYEO),
Pino Donaggio (Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Up at the Villa),
    Fionan Hanvey/Maurice Seezer (The Boxer),
    Michael Giacchino (both MoH's),
    Goblin (Suspiria, Tenebrae on order),
    Isaac Hayes (Shaft),
    Joseph LoDuca (Hercules vol 3),
Alan Menken (Hunchback of Notre Dame),
Thomas Newman (Scent of a Woman),
    Zbigniew Preisner (Preisner's Music),
    Philippe Sarde (Tess/The Tenant),
Lalo Schifrin (Enter the Dragon 57 min),
    John Scott (Antony & Cleopatra),
    Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love),
    Debbie Wiseman (Wilde).
Next I think I'd like to start getting some Jean-Claude Petit, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jon Brion, Jan A.P. Kaczamarek, maybe a couple of others.
So, I suppose my question is this:
what have you bought recently by a composer that's new to you, & are there any composers you don't have any albums by that you think you may get sometime soon?

np Bentley Rhythm Ace (Not a score, but it is the first thing of theirs' I've bought, so...)

Definitely on top of my list is Christopher Gordon with his Moby Dick score, I can't wait to check out On The Beach.

Aside from that, there's only the occasional "lonely composer" in my recent additions, but at least I always try to find something new (which is fortunately much easier when doing CDR trades, this way I can get scores I wouldn't "risk" to buy blindly).

NP: Anton Bruckner: Symphony in D minor "Nullte" (Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim)

Lordy lordy, what is one to do when one goes to the shops and one sees all those loverly things by our faves and, nestling beside them, something by...Gabriel Yared or somebody? I had that problem quite recently, and I picked up the Yared, just to try to expand my horizons a bit. I wish I had the guts to do that a bit more often (not that the Yared turned out to be a revelation or anything, but it was a learning experience.)

Good thing about going to bad shops: more often than not the Yared is going to be the ONLY thing that's even remotely worth taking a chance on, so you get it anyway if you have the right cash. I'd never take a chance ordering online however: too many must-haves, none of them scored by Gabriel Yared.

I would love to regularly try out stuff by newer names like Christopher Gordon for example, but unless I see it in the local record store it's unlikely I'd ever get it, which is a shame.

JJ, Kaczmarek is terrific. I wish he was getting more work. Run, don't walk, and buy his supremely beautiful scores for Bliss and Washington Square.

Pete, I don't think he's scored any other films, but "Magnolia" by Jon Brion is one I will recommend until the end of time.
Without a doubt one of the finest scores of the 1990's!

    Get it!

I'd like to check out some Christopher Young, hear more from Richard Marvin because he has the same first name as me and also some more Morricone & Barry.

Yeah, with Jon Brion, it was Magnolia that I was thinking about. I really loved the film, A would very much like the score. Unfortunately, local HMV only just got a copy of the score album in - for around £20. I hope to pick it up online sometime soon though (maybe as a birthday present from me to me).
Christopher Gordon is another that I'd quite like to try out, having heard such good things about. Oh, good grief. I need more money.

My copy arrived from amazon.com two days ago.
I think their price is about $14.99 $U.S.

If you order it from there is should still work out cheaper than 20pounds, though I'm not sure about P+H. Maybe you should order several CDs.
    Just a thought.

Well, just a little "bring up to date" with how well my collecting is going. Crazily, I have still failed to obtain any Petit, Sakamoto or Kaczamarek, hoever, I have done quite well otherwise, since the first post I have now got:
    Jon Brion - Magnolia
    Ry Cooder - Music by...
    John Corigliano - Altered States
    Michael Danna - Bounce
    Don Davis - The Matrix
    Keith Emerson - Inferno
    Joel Goldsmith - Shiloh
Richard G. Mitchell - The Bridge
Julian Nott - A Respectable Trade
Nicola Piovani - La Vita e Bella
Stanislas Syrewicz - The Clandestine Marriage
Dmitri Tiomkin - Giant (definitely need more of his stuff)
Alan Williams - Island of the Sharks

Gosh, I love hearing music from a composer that's new to me. Quite pleased with most of these, with the Corigiano, Emerson, Mitchell, Nott & Brion scores the stand outs. Anyone else been adventurous?

I want to get Sarde's Tess. The theme sounds like one of the most beautiful things ever written. I just need to flop out the cash to pick up the French disc.

jonathan, TESS is an astounding score, try and get hold of it. Robert Townson of Varese considers Sarde one of the best composers writing today!...and I agree!

Pete M (how ya doing bud ), check out Sakamoto's LITTLE BUDDHA, exotic , dramatic and varied it's a lovely score and my personal favourite by him.

My god, how do you people buy all those sountracks in so little time? I mean- don't you save money for anything like food? Ah, but at least you'd die happy-
I suppose my opinion of sountrack purchasing is rather skewed. I'm 14, which means not a heck of a lot of money. I usually shop around, and won't hesitate to refure to buy anything unless I think its a very good deal. It's taking me weeks just to find a good price for a sountrack I'd get a lot out of. At this rate... dear god, I need to get some money-

Tess is a magnificent score... The theme is only the tip of a really beautiful iceberg. It remains one of the best scores I've ever heard from Sarde.

Food? I spend $1300 a semester on food! I'd so much rather buy film scores with that cash. I've eaten... umm, zero times this month in the school's cafeteria. I'm really getting my monies worth out of that.

Well, from SecondSpin, I've ordered Robert Cobert's "The Night Stalker And Other Classic Thrillers". Admittedly it's primarily to bump up the order so the postage rate doesn't bite as much, but it'll also be interesting as the only piece I know Cobert for is the theme to "The Winds Of War".

Also I recently obtained Chapter III's double-header of Ortolaini's "The Biggest Bundle Of Them All" and Oliver Nelson's "Zigzag"; both composers I'm entirely unfamilar with. "Zigzag" in particular is interesting; the main title is a ferocious piece of percussion mayhem.

Having said that, this morning I took delivery of three Jerry Goldsmiths and a Bruce Broughton. So much for adventurous (though they are pretty good...)

Well, most of those I actually got second hand for about maybe £3->5. Being adventurous is so much easier when there's no so much money at stake.

Plus, I too have been busy with more familiar stuff, with two Goldsmiths, a Beltrami & a Badalamenti on the way. They're all good stuff, though.

Tess is really lovely, yeah. I should probably listen to it more. But there's loads of CD's I really need to listen to more.

NP Jurassic Park (don't listen to this very much either)

    Wooohooooooooooo!!!!
Good grief. Just discovered that this was my 1001st post!!! Wow, kinda crazy how that crept up on me. Jeez, wonder how long it'll take me to get another 1000? Hmmm, I feel a topic coming on...

Once is an accident, but twice is just plain stupid. Sorry, everyone.

And no, this is not just a blatant attempt to get more posts for no reason. At all. (Honest.) It was a genuine mistake (which makes it all the more embarassing, sadly). Me just got no brain today methinks.
