Supposedly this film will be rereleased in February and the DVD will be out in March. Here's a great article about that AND Williams' work...

This film is a forgotten classic, if it returns to theaters that will be fantastic.Looking forward to hearing those 10 alternate cues on the DVD
(by my reckoning, that should mean 4 which were not on the Rhino CD)posted 01-05-2001 12:11 PM PT (US)

The ORIGINAL mix? I was disappointed by the sound quality on the expanded Superman album (they didn't have access to the original masters or something like that). Maybe the DVD has better sound? And 10 alternate tracks?!I've never seen Superman, and I really don't know if I'd enjoy it, but it looks like this DVD is a must for me, too.

The Rhino release used a mix prepared for the film (and the LP master for some tracks).

So the newly-discovered mix should be "more original" than the film mix used for the Rhino album, right?NP: Moby Dick (Christopher Gordon)

This pisses me off. Why couldn't the people making the damned SOUNDTRACK find these "original mix" tapes? Same thing with North By Northwest. And people wonder why we prefer to do these things ourselves (with isolated scores).Bastards,

LOL@Shaun
I was 9 years old when I saw the first one in the theater. IT WAS GREAT!!!! From the opening seconds the music was captivating. Everyone was so into it to. Such a great film and an even better experience for a kid on opening night!!!!! Even the opening night of Superman 2 was exciting!!!!posted 01-05-2001 10:50 PM PT (US)

Marian, you haven't seen it? One of the great British/International ambitious productions of all-time.

But I think Rhino DID have the original masters for NBNW, it's just that the technical equipment has been improved during the last years and allowed the producers of the DVD to make the score sound better.
Fart: I haven't seen it, but it looks like I will soon.
Unless it's very different from what I expect, I doubt I'll like it though - not my type of movie.Marian.

Come on Marian!
SUPERMAN is one of the best comic book inspired movie - if not the best.Close to it movies like BATMAN are nothing less than mediocre.
And a movie cannot be bad with THAT score!

Yep, this is the best comic-book movie, outstanding.
I didn't think there was anything wrong with the Rhino sound quality considering the age of the material, Star Wars: ANH sounded no better IMO.

Well, I'll let you know what I think of it when I have the DVD!
BTW, I like the score a lot, but don't rank it as high as most of here do. The second half of the original album wasn't that fascinating, and the expanded edition only added a couple of really good cues.
(I absolutely love certain parts of the score, though, like the main title, the flying music, the Americana tracks (very reminiscent of The Cowboys, one of Williams' very best scores), and particularly Fortress of Solitude).

It's a tragedy.
If you don't collect classical, let me tell you that there are some recordings from the late '50s that sound great, and MANY recordings from the '60s and '70s that sound like they were recorded yesterday. Great results can be obtained when the carefully preserved first-generation tape is digitally stored and remixed.

Indeed. I have a Bernstein CD from the late 50's that sounds better than many scores released today.NP: Kundun (Philip Glass)

I forgot to mention the opening fanfare of "The Planet Krypton" above - one of my very favourite Williams cues.A.G., I think Superman's sound isn't as good as Star Wars, at least not in the louder parts. Star Wars sounds much clearer, which remains one of the most important aspects of sound quality for me (I still find the sound quality on Phantom Menace bad).

Here's a scoop from today at www.DARKHORIZONS.com---Superman Re-Release: Here's a piece of news that'll get fans excited before the DVD release mid-year:
"Warner's has decided to do a test theatrical release of Superman: The Movie special edition in San Antonio, Texas the weekend of March 23rd. If it's successful in this relative market they're going to go wide with it as they did with Exorcist. Needless to say, Donner and crew are trying our best to get everyone hyped for it".---I live in San Antonio and urge anyone close to here to come down in March. We cant let The Exorcist beat Supes!!!!
(Wow, I've never known San Antonio to be a test market for anything...except for "Clear Pepsi" ten years ago LOL!!!)
