Oscar® Nominee

I just thought I might ask for some opinions here. Um, I'm trading in some of my other CDs, non-soundtracks, at the Wherehouse this coming Tuesday night and I was wondering if you guys could recommend at least 7 film scores for me?Cause the trade in deal at the Wherehouse is 3 CDs for 1 (new, old, cheap, expensive). I have enough CDs to trade to get 7 soundtracks in return. So could guys please help me out here and give me some suggestions on what soundtracks to get? Thanks.

Well firstly, how many film scores do you have? Here's a list of what *I* would buy, but you may already have them or consider me "stupid" for liking them, but oh well.
BATMAN - Elfman
MAGNOLIA - Brion
TOTAL RECALL - Goldsmith
RAISE THE TITANIC - Barry
AMERICAN BEAUTY or THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION - Newman
RONIN - Cmiral
BRAVEHEART or LEGENDS OF THE FALL - HornerI hope this is of some help, but if you have some of these or don't like them, let me know and I'll gladly alter them for ya.
Yep, just the sorta top guy I am.

How good is "The Shawshank Redemption"? Is it as good as American Beauty or better?

I got Shawshank Redemption a few months ago, only listened to it once... There are a few standout tracks, but it's kinda a hard listen (like American Beauty)... I just gotta give it more time, but outside those few tracks I'm not sure if there is much thematic material... Watch the film (one of my favorites), if you like the score, buy the CD.

Shawshank Redemption is a wonderful with a classic reprisal of the main theme at the end. Worth the price for the last 2 tracks alone. It also works much better if you see the film (but then, who really hasn't at this stage?)
serious Thomas Newman fans all pretty much agree that this is a good score.

Well, this is hard because I'm having to make assumptions about your score buying habits....so I will assume you are a relative newbie.
Here are the seven I would get (assuming of Wherehouse has them):
Dangerous Beauty, George FentonHeaven & Earth, Kitaro, as I listen to it, great stuff
Playing by Heart, John Barry
Raise the Titanic, John Barry
Wonderland, Michael Nyman; Nyman critics should give this one a try; very emotional score that proves Nyman knows what he is doing
Total Recall: Deluxe Edition, you gotta get a Goldsmith
The Straight Story, Angelo Badalamenti
hmm, actually most of this is pretty downbeat stuff. The only real actioner there is Total Recall. Dangerous Beauty is a lush, playful romantic score that will leave you wondering just why the hell Fenton did not receive so much as an Oscar nomination. Reminds me, I need to get another copy cuz has gone the way of the dodo; nowhere to be found.

"The Shawshank Redemption" was a difficult listen the first time I heard it, but then when I gave it another try it just seemed to "click" with me. The last 2 tracks certainly are outstanding, but the whole score is just amazing IMHO. I think it's just as good as "American Beauty", but it's really like comparing steak and necterines. They both taste good, but they are both very different to each other.Wasn't "Playing by Heart" only available in bootleg or promo?
