There are always themes in scores, but with all the other material, what stands out in some of the scores for you guys? I was just listening to Willow and realized that this piece was simply badass, and several scores contain those occasions... Even if it's just a score or two, what are your favorite piece(s) in them outside of the themes?

Willow (Track 2) - 1:12... This piece just gets makes me want to break stuff, I just start waving my hands like a conductor whenever I hear it!

Sneakers (Track 7) - 2:01... This piece is so incredible to me, and I'm not so sure why... It is very simple, but stands out above the rest of the material on the score... Odd.

Mighty Joe Young (Track 8) - 5:10... Such rousing music, it just flows so well with the film and on CD.. Maybe it's the use of those drums, not quite sure...

Legends of the Fall (Track 3) - 1:27 & 5:40... This score is a masterpiece, and these are my 2 favorite pieces (this track is definately the best on the CD). It also helps that this was one of the only good scenes in the film.

The Perfect Storm (Track 8) - 2:37... Lasts about a minute or so, and is easily the most emotional peiece on the CD. It goes wonderfully in the film as well.

Glory (Track 9) - 3:00... Lasts a minute or so... It is so incredibly emotional in the film I can't explain . =)

Deep Impact (Track 8) - 2:32... A beautiful Horner piano solo.. then it leads into the soft orchestra... Deeply emotional in one of Horner's most underrated scores.

I'll stop there, there are so many more but I don't want to waste your time as most of you probably won't even care (or read this thread because "Horner" is in the title). Even so, tell me what your guys' are so I can pop in my CD's and give em a listen! =)

I'm skeptical of Horner, but two of my very favorites will always be the opening cue from THE LAND BEFORE TIME and the amazing "Airport Goodbye" from the otherwise unremarkable THE PELICAN BRIEF. The "Hymn" from COURAGE UNDER FIRE is gorgeous as well.

STAR TREK II, KRULL and SNEAKERS are probably my favorite overall albums by Horner.

My favourite will always be the 'Freedom' bit in Braveheart.

I agree with Rocco about "Airport Goodbye" from Pelican Brief. All the way through that film I kept thinking, cue after cue, "Hm, no reason to buy the CD..." And then, in that final scene, which I found the only truly affecting one in the entire movie, I thought "I've GOT to get this CD."

The whole of SNEAKERS gets a lot of plays - as well as being just downright good, it brings back memories of living in LA with a roomie who became a good friend, and we played this all the time.

The chase cues from GORKY PARK are pretty fine too - I'm a sucker for heavily percussive chase music and these get the ol' blood pumping pretty good.

I like the gallumphing music in LEGENDS OF THE FALL as Brad Pitt rides back into everyone's life with the horses. Actually that whole score is a favourite - seem to remember my roomie loved it too, and it was one of the first film scores he ever bought. I'm afraid I infected him with the collecting disease and he's now totally incurable.

My CDs of STAR TREK 2 and KRULL would be dead by now, if CDs could get worn down. I never tire of the Genesis Countdown sequence, one of the best race-against time-cues I've ever heard.

And the final scene in WOLFEN, as Albert Finney displays his sympathy for the critters by smashing the model buildings, and the wolves are seen running back to their church in slow motion ... that music always rivets me, even if it is a "homage" to Ives' Unanswered Question.

My God so many, but I'll try to keep it rather short, I must say Hasta this is a great topic, it inspired me to pull out all my Horner stuff that was sitting away collecting dust.

    Casper- Track 10- Casper's Lullaby
This is by far my favorite Horner theme ever written, every single second of it is pure beauty, but if a gun was placed to my head and forced to pick a favorite moment from it, I would have to choose the grand orchestra build up at 2:48.

The Land Before Time- Track 3- Whispering Winds
I really didn't care for the playfulness that began about the 3:40 mark and ended about 4:44. My favorite part of the cue begins about the 5:04 mark and continues all the way until the 7:50 mark, the orchestra and choir build up about 7:16 is pure musical bliss

Braveheart- Track 11- For Love of a Princess
Not really much I can say about this one except that it's AMAZING. The entire track is amazing and the best on the CD IMO. My favorite part would have to gear up about the 1:45 mark and carry the entire theme all the way until the end of the track, I'm listning to it right now and can't get enough of it--definitly some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard!

Legends of the Fall- Track 5- Samuel's Death

Now I actually didn't even like the ENTIRE track, The percussion for the first 1:53 is AMAZING, one of my favorite Horner action cues, I listen to this one when I seem to have trouble 'getting going' during the day, it never fails to get the job done

While there are so many more that I can think of I would probally be typing all night if I listed ALL of them.

    NP: Braveheart -James Horner

Krull main title is the cue that made me love Horner even in his bad days.
But don't forget Michael's Gift To Karen, from Brainstorm, one of the most amazing piano cues in filmmusic.
    And the list goes on...

Everybody on here (who has read my profile) must know by now that my favorite Horner score is Searching for Bobby Fischer. I have a review somewhere on this site if you wanna read why

Definitley the last part of "Deciding to Build the Field" on Field of DReams, and "The Drive HOme" from the same. Also, the Wind Song in Mighty Joe Young was great!
Casper is good, especially Casper's Lullaby and where he takes Kat to the lighthouse.

The last track from In Country is a compelling piece, and from what I have heard of Horner, the seed from which he has composed all his other lyrical scores (Titanic, Apollo 13, Braveheart, etc).

It's interesting to notice how Horner is still able to compose some very beatiful themes and them bury them bellow tons of recicled stuff from his previous works and other people's.

Just like in DEEP IMPACT where we have to wait for almost 75 minutes of ludicrous boring recicled material to hear the 3 minutes full rendition of the gorgeous theme with chorus in the last track...

Definitly something is very wrong with this guy's head!

blaaaah, DEEP IMPACT ... wall-to-wall syrup. Even my mother, who rarely mentions film music, was offended by that one ("Who WROTE this crap?"). On the plus side, she does like "Casper's Lullaby" -- although her favorite appears to be Goldsmith's "Kick the Can" from TWILIGHT ZONE THE MOVIE. Runs in the family?

I happen to think the majority of Deep Impact is wonderful stuff, and the last track is far from one of the highlights on the album. When I first heard the score, it didn't sound like much... After hearing it 15 times or so, I'm in love with it. Give it another try maybe?

Rocketeer has some great material. It's bright and energetic and brassy. Everyone has this, right?

STII is still my favorite Hornor score, I guess, although I hate the CD (it's a sound-quality disaster).

    "Spock" from STAR TREK 2.
Horner's bombast bores me to tears, but I dig this groovy piece of exotica.
