This great actor (whose formal name was actually Jason Robards Jr.) has just left us. News story available at:http://www.nydailynews.com/2000-12-27/News_and_Views/Beyond_the_City/a-93791.asp
Filmography available at:
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Robards,+Jason
I thought him tremendous in last year's MAGNOLIA, and thought he more deserved the Oscar nomination that went to Tom Cruise; but he already had two awards of his own (a rare back-to-back Supporting Oscar winner for ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and JULIA.
Following MAGNOLIA (which he shot while ailing from lung cancer), he managed to appear in one final film, the TV production GOING HOME (2000).
Rest in peace, sir.

It seems no one wants to mention the films I enjoy Robards in the most, especially his participation in Western films directed by visionaries Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone, as well as John Sturges and Alan J. Pakula. The Ballad of Cable Hogue, Once Upon a Time in the West, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Hour of the Gun and Comes a Horseman.
Robards immensely added to my enjoyment of these films, and is one of the reasons why I love Cable Hogue so much. There's just so much there....
Missed, but never forgotten!

I would add to that list Mike Hodges' great and woefully little-known BLACK RAINBOW (1990). A terrific movie with knockout performances by Robards, Rosanna Arquette and Tom Hulce, and sporting as well a fine score by John Scott.

Peter K says it all for me though I'd have to include A Thousand Clowns and All The President's Men among the films he was great in. And Rocco is right--Julia is a "woman's" picture and yet as 'Dash', he's the best thing in it. Robards led a better wild life: lots of manly drinking, and a marriage to Lauren Bacall, and he almost made it to 80 besides....sounds fine to me.[Message edited by Lou Goldberg on 12-27-2000]

I'm in total agreement with you, Pete. I love Cable Hogue so much... This is my favorite Robards performance and also one of my favorite films. Not only do you get a great performance from Robards, but you also get great performances from David Warner and Stella Stevens. Ah, Stella... And from when I was growing up, I always loved Robards as the father in Something Wicked This Way Comes. In both performances, he exudes a strength and sincerity that is totally believable. I wonder if he ever published anything. I bet he had some great stories to tell...

I agree, he was a great actor, and he deserved praise just like every other actor in Magnolia. A great film with great performences by all. The best ensamble in years.

MAGNOLIA boasted a tremendous ensemble indeed ... among its strengths is that its writer/director obviously liked all his characters, even when they were personally loathsome. Paul Thomas Anderson has a sympathy and an empathy rare in a man still so young. Here is an amusing story about Jason Robards meeting Richard Nixon:
