Um...... man I gotta be honest with you. 3 or 4 years ago Danny Elfman was kidnaped. And some other guy stole his identity, but doesn't know how to write music!

I mean this has too be the case right? Listen to Edward Scissor Hands,Batman, Black Beauty, Sommersby. Then listen to A Simple Plan, Civil Action, and Proof of Life. This can't possibly be done by the same person.

Apprently people are catching on, and the real Elfman was asked bythe fake Elfman, "How do you do it?!" And for more food and water the real Elfman gave out some musical tips for Sleepy Hollow, and Instinct.

Proof of Life, is mostly noise. With no real melody, other than a little sublte motif on Woodwinds that I know I heard in Isham's Galapogos that you probably won't notice! The score is also electronic heavy, and lots of purcussion, but it goes absolutly nowhere. The only thing I liked was the South American flavor in it, with the spanish guitars, and woodwinds.
The action is head-ache bringing, the slow parts make no sense.

    Please free Elfman!

I don't know. The movie was pretty good. The score, as far as I could tell, was pretty original for Elfman. I love Elfman, though, so I can't really say anything bad about him.

I totally agree with Tim. The main titles were pretty cool with the percussion and the very simple woodwind motif, but the rest of it is just noise for the film. The only sections of score that really add anything to the film are the percussive ones, but even then the other instruments playing along don't do much.

    In one word? "Bleh."

I'm going to disagree here. I just returned from listening to "The Rescue" (cue number 8). It's relentless! But, if you're a fan of "themes", don't get this.

I just want to add, that my comments above about the score to Proof of Life are based on the listening experience of the score outside the movie.

I'd have to agree, that some of the score in context worked, which is usually the case with all scores. I think Elfman just really wanted to create a certain atmosphere for each situation that would work just as good as a theme. I bethe asked himself two questions when scoring this movie. Is a big theme, really nesasary for a movie of this fashion? As fast as this movie moves, where would I put one without intruding on the entire atmosphere of the film and would I have time to develop it before the next scene?

I can't comment on PROOF OF LIFE, but WILL say this about the "transformation" of Elfman: I think A SIMPLE PLAN is one of the best things he's ever done, and I say that as a HUGE fan of his earlier SCISSORHANDS/BATMAN etc. period. I also thought A CIVIL ACTION was fascinating, and, frankly, based on the above remarks, suspect I will like PROOF OF LIFE as well.

Most composers try to do more than one thing. The better ones succeed. I believe Elfman is one of the better ones.

A Simple Plan was a GREAT I mean a GREAT haunting and simple film with a GREAT I mean GREAT score for the film. Outside of the film I dunno, but it worked so well and even made the film so much better for its haunting sounds. A Simple Plan and Ravenous are the two best eerie scores for me.

Now I've never heard A Simple Plan, I've only read the reviews. But I feel the sameway about Instinct. A brilliant score that was perfect for the movie.

Actually, "Proof of Life" isn't Elfman's newest - "The Family Man" is.

Went to "The Family Man" expecting to hear more of the typical mediocre Elfman of late, but was stunned by his score. The themes are well-developed and very good, and the many choral parts reminded me of "Edward Scissorhands". Very moving and thematic.

Anyone know about a score album for this one? There are only two score tracks on the CD release, and they aren't CLOSE to being the best parts of the score.
