How much music (if any) did Jerry Goldsmith write for Judge Dredd? I don't remember Alan Silvestri score. I wouldn't mine hearing how Goldsmith would have scored another film with Sly.

While still intending to do the film (he had to leave for scheduling reasons), Goldsmith wrote trailer music for JUDGE DREDD, three version of which are available for easy downloading at the DECONSTRUCTING GOLDSMITH website. Click the "audio" at the top left, then click "Misc I."http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Academy/9059/scoresframe.htm

Jerry Goldsmith did not write any music for Judge Dredd. His music was used for the trailer, however.-Racerprose

I thought I just said that. One could argue Goldsmith DID "write music for JUDGE DREDD" inasmuch as the trailer serves as a preview for what he MIGHT have done if he'd had time to score the whole thing.
I don't know for sure whose idea it was to hire Goldsmith for JUDGE DREDD, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Stallone, who's very proactive when it comes to scores for his films ... he worked directly with Goldsmith on the RAMBO sequels, and personally asked for John Barry to score THE SPECIALIST. And of course, his ROCKY tunester Bill Conti was asked back for pictures Stallone neither produced nor directed, e.g. FIST, VICTORY and LOCK UP (a fine, woefully unreleased piece of work.)

Judge Dredd is perhaps Alan Silvestri's best action score ( I prefer it over the Back to the Future scores and the over rated Mission Impossible rejected). The theme is great fun, and the driving Block War cue is awesome. The desert cues are simliar to Predator and the final cue ends in a wonderful rendition of the main theme. There is a bootleg of this out there with great sound quality. I believe it has around 15-20 minutes not on the original album (I'm not positive cause I didn't bring it home for xmas vacation). There are no track titles.Supposedly there is a 2 cd Judge Dredd boot of the recording sessions out there, but I can't seem to get a hold on it

I've to agree with Boba on this one.
JUDGE DREDD is indeed Silvestri finest action score. He was obviously influencied by the trailer music Jerry Goldsmith composed, which is just brilliant!I like the movie too, with its astonishing visuals and efx. The only let down is, of course, Stallone who ruins the character with his cheesy act and Dredd makes no sense without the helmet.
This score deserves an expanded release!

Yeah andre, Stallone couldn't wait to get out of the costume and into a vest for the usual testosterone filled crap that this picture was, I was originaly looking forward to this, but as soon as I heard Stallone was demanding rewrites this and character changes that, I just knew a stinker was on it's way! Silvestri's score is a fine effort

I haven't seen or heard this, but might give it a shot, since I've warmed up to Silvestri (esp. his action stuff) somewhat more over the years.Interesting how often that when Goldsmith can't do a film, producers turn to Silvestri: JUDGE DREDD, REINDEER GAMES, THE MUMMY RETURNS ... nowadays I can see where they're coming from. For sheer relentlessness and variousness, BLOWN AWAY and VOLCANO (for example) could as easily have come from Goldsmith's pen. (I don't mean Silvestri is copying Goldsmith, I mean that they both have refreshingly idiosyncratic approaches.)
JUDGE DREDD's director Danny Cannon's previous film THE YOUNG AMERICANS gave a new composer his first shot at a movie. His name? David Arnold.

First off, the score is fine the way it is; IMO, any bootlegs are very unnecessary.Second, I saw the film a while back (months after purchasing the CD) and it reminded me of THE ABYSS - Silvestri's score, though terrific, is so chopped up in the final film, it is truly a miracle that a coherent soundtrack was constructed. (Example: the first 1:30 or so of "New World" occurs toward the film's beginning, introducing Rico in prison).
Third, to paraphrase myself, the score is wonderful. Nowadays, it's a rare and beautiful thing when Silvestri gets to do an action film (along with witches, ghosts and holy men, he's used parent traps to go mouse hunting), but when he does, look out!
I find "Judgment Day" and "Council Chaos" to be particularly addictive. I think the score should have come with a Surgeon General's warning.

The "Block War" cue is different from the one used in the movie. I prefer the movie version. And which version is the bootleg using?
