Just got this great score (coupled with a couple other goodies (In Country and Testament).

Now, of course... there are plenty of "Hornerisms" throughout this one. Star Trek 3, The Land Before Time, Willow, etc... BUT, the big surprise was in track 9, which sounds VERY similar to part of the opening theme from "The Goonies" by Mr. Grusin.

    Anyone hear this?

Yes Jeron it does indeed sound like Horner ripped off Grusin. It is the scene where they find the cookie in the backyard.

Yeah... I couldn't believe I was hearing it, but hey - he did a decent job "translating" it. Actually, I wasn't all that surprised... it was just rather blatant (and from another composer, not himself!).

No doubt I will be jumped on by Ford A. Thaxton or some other genius for telling this story, but here goes:

The most blatant steal, other than the repeated Carl Stalling cribbings, in HONEY was from Nino Rota's AMARCORD -- so blatant and obvious that Rota's estate actually sued. Supposedly (I have not compared film vs. video tracks) Disney asked Horner to rerecord the theme for video rerelease; then when Disney thought of putting the score up for an Oscar nomination, Horner reminded them that they had not paid for an album of the score, and he did not approve of having scores nominated for which there were no albums.

Scurrilous gossip -- isn't it fun? (I don't know Horner personally, but know enough people who do that told me this story was absolutely true.) I am going to catch SUCH hell for posting this ... but not from friends who know.

    Ok wait a minute...

you are saying he refused to have the score nominated because Disney did not pay the money to release the score? Now tell me if I sound rather oberboard here, but he seems to be a little of a spoiled brat, doesn't he?

Scott: as unbelievable as it sounds, that is precisely how the story was told to me, way back when.

Remember that Horner is the same man who dropped the great Shawn Murphy as his sound mixer, because Murphy would not drop a prior job he'd already agreed to, in order to fit Jamie's schedule. Horner didn't say "okay, next time," he said "never again."
