Welp, as some of you know, I'm not the biggest Goldsmith fan. I haven't really gave the man much of a chance, I'll admit. Well, I own around 100 scores, and not "1" is Goldsmith. Until yesterday (and today, when I purchased Rudy), when I picked up Congo in the used department. Now, from what I've read, I've come to the conclusion many of you hate this score, even you Goldsmith freaks out there (with the exception of Jeron, who I've read positive comments about this score). Anyway, I am really taking a liking to it, and the only score I really have heard from him with a similar sound is Ghost and the Darkness, along with a tid bit of The 13th Warrior. Well, my question is what is similar to Congo from Goldsmith other than these two? I will be ranking in the cash come Xmas time and will probably be getting a lot of scores, and look foward to getting alot of Goldsmith scores. So far, I'm set to get Ghost and the Darkness, Small Soldiers, Mulan, and The 13th Warrior... What would you all recommend to me (an avid Horner and Zimmer lover), considering what I thought about Congo... Also, Jeron sent me an mp3 suite of Legend and I didn't like it as much as Congo.... Weird eh? Anyway thanks.

Hey Jason... Here are some of Goldsmith "Classics" I'd recommend. In my book, they are must-haves:

    -Total Recall (Deluxe Edition)
    -Explorers
    -Basic Instinct
-Star Trek I, V, VIII, and IX (I'll send clips, as I know you aren't a Trek fan)
    -Supergirl
    -Legend (You've heard this)
    -Forever Young
    -First Knight
    -Night Crossing
    -Lionheart
    -Air Force One
    -Patton
-The Mummy (if you like The 13th Warrior)
-Rambo I, II, and III (Rambo II is the most popular)

And, scores that aren't as highly-acclaimed, but still very good:

    -US Marshalls
    -Dennis the Menace
    -Executive Decision
-Chain Reaction (if only for the "Ice Chase"!)
-Bad Girls (if you can find it)
-Hollow Man (ya gotta work up to this one)

These titles are just a start... I certainly wouldn't expect you to get all of them! This should provide more or less a nice selection to choose from and zero in on. You're wanting something that resembles The Ghost and the Darkness (better than Congo), Small Soldiers (refers to Patton in a few places), Mulan, and The 13th Warrior... and I all can do is refer you to pretty much everything else he's done. In each his scores, he almost always provides new colors to a familiar canvas.

Take your pick from the ones I listed above! I have a lot of confidence in Jerry's music - and I think you would find something in all of them that you could enjoy. I'm sure others will be able to contribute other ideas as well. If you need clips, just lemme know! You know me... I love to share. Also, another good source for clips and info is "Deconstructing Goldsmith." Check it out.

    J-Man

NP- Total Recall Deluxe Edition (Thanks, Kyp!! You're the best.)
PS- I highly suggest you check out the Mulan link. Trust me!

    Try Medicine Man.

It is similiar to Congo, using some of the same kind of themes. The film is set in a South American jungle, so its inspiration is similar.

Many have opined that it is better than Congo, but I don't hear it.

I like Congo as well. Goldsmith's music MAKES the climax of the movie enjoyable. The two action tracks underscoring it are worth the price of the disc. First there's the fantastic killer apes horror march, pure chaos, and then Goldsmith goes all out turning the main theme into a brief but rousing "western-like" theme.
Anyone who's seen the movie and likes Jerry Goldsmith will enjoy this scene. Even if you think its quite cheesy, deep down you're loving it...

"Put em on the endangered species list!"

Also, Hasta, if you can find it, "The River Wild" is a must have as well. It has a beautiful main theme. The suspense music isn't as entertaining, but if you've seen the film you can appreciate how the jagged rhythms of the music perfectly match the unpredictable rapids and sharp rocks which constantly endanger the movie's characters.

There are two stand-out action tracks, but if you get this one, you're getting it for the main theme.

    Well, heck,

just get any Goldsmith score for crying out loud. He always does a great job (no matter what Daniel 2 says).

The Final Conflict (gotta get that).
Star Trek (all of 'em, whether you like Star Trek or not...btw...why wouldn't you like Star Trek...)

    I don't know....

I like Rudy myself. One of his better overall scores in the '90s. Now I have liked most of his work from 1962-1988. Since then, there are several I Have not liked much including Angie and some others. But he has come back with some great stuff in the last part of the '90s with Small Soldiers, Mummy, 13th Warrior and others. Best, John.

LOL... I was going to mention The Edge, The River Wild, The Shadow, Medicine Man, The Omen(s), Rudy, etc... but I felt as if I was beginning to list everything! Ah well... Jason, they're right. Anything you get by JG is an excellent purchase.

With respect to both Goldsmith and Jeron--I'd just take a moment to clarify, so that "true seekers" in the future might avoid confustion--

The other Stallone 80's franchise goes like this:

First Blood - (The first Rambo Movie)
    Rambo: First Blood, Part II
    Rambo III

It's a goofy thing, but it helps while scanning the aisles at Best Buy...(Though you won't find "Rambo III" there, yet.)
