I just made a list of all the CDs I posted in the various "What's new in your collection" threads this year. January is missing, as I joined this board only in February, but from then on, nearly everything should be here (I forgot to mention a couple of discs, not many), including self-made copies and trades, so I didn't pay the full price for everything in the list.Anyway, I was surprised, and a bit shocked. Since February, I got 100 new CDs (exactly 100 in my list, but as I said, it was in fact a couple more)! That means that about a third of my collection (well, maybe a little bit less, as it may have grown since I last counted it; maybe a quarter now) wasn't there one year ago.
Please, anybody tell me he got more this year, so I don't feel so insane.

I started this year with 150-200 score CD's.
I have 500 now.

Back in January, my collection had just passed the 300 mark. As it stands now, I've got 430+.
I'm trying to cut back, though! Really! (Especially cause I don't have room for 500+ cds, and the number is fast approaching.)NP: Dinosaur, JNH *****

Let me tell you, even though I have wanted to figure this out for sometime. I always put off doing so, in sake of my health! Not wanting a heart attack, you know!?
While, I can't figure the exact amount. I have gone from about 300 CD', about an year to a year and a half ago. Upwards to 600 of them. Maybe others have experienced the same, but for me, each year I seem to get more and more soundtracks than the previous years before. Mostly, because of all the great recommendations you all give, but my tastes have really improved this last year or so. Even if a bit harsh on my wallet!

All in all, I almost did have a heart attack. Having over 100, in just the first 3 months did not look well! Sheesh! And I kept wondering why I was running out of space! Doh!

Anyway, after taking out the titles that were bought during late 1999, and any ones listed more than once, such as review or extra copies. I counted approx. 225 for this last year. Unfortunately, that is not even all of them! I guess you can all feel better now, It looks like I am the insane one here!

Brother Abbey, I share your illness.I just ran a quey against my database it returned a count of 235 new entries recorded this year so far.
Actually, I have about 35 more that haven't been entered yet, so the year looks like it will top out at around 270.
Isn't there a support group for this? Soundtracks Anonymous?

(I wouldn't go, because I can stop whenever I want to.)

Harsh and judgemental statement. The really cool thing is that I qualify by even THAT warped criteria: as I am retired, it's score CD's all day long in House Hatfield![Message edited by Mark Hatfield on 12-10-2000]

Hah! At least I can say I have less than 10 -- that's TEN -- new scores in my year 2000 purchases. How's that for quality control???Alas, however....there's at least ten times that number of scores from the past -- from last year all the way back into the 1940s...
Nope! No moral superiority here....

Rather presumptious don't you think?1999 was a fallow year for me...hardly spent a dime on music. So, this year, I decided to play catch-up; going from 500 odd soundtracks to 600 and something, most of it 'Golden Age' stuff I'd put on the back burner for years and years. For example, I can now sleep soundly at night knowing I finally have original copies of 'The Guns of Navarone' and '55 Days in Peking'. Still, there remains a significant gap in my collection of both old and new which remains to be filled. 2001, please say hello to my wallet!

Well I went back to last December amd since then I've added about 59 Scores counting CDR's. Overall I would say I've added 78 CDs if you throw in other music. Of course I have a list of probably 30 or so I haven't gotten around to getting yet.

For all of you who've purchased more than sixty in the past 12 months, they don't really count as being in your collection if you haven't heard them at least 15 times and become intimately aquainted with the music of each track. Will: Yes, I appreciate my music.
Skiletic: Oddly enough, even though I have a job AND a social life, I meet your standards!
Many of my CDs get entesive playtime in the first few days, and then drop off as I get newer ones. CDs I don't like only get about three cycles before I stop listening to them and get rid of them. But, let's take an average CD:
Works: I - I got this some months ago. I played 35+ times in the first four days. Since then, I have played it about 15 times at varying intervals. With over 50 listens, I can safely say I am well aquianted with the music in every track.
Even CDs that only get five-ten cycles in the first week get picked up at least five more times in the next month or two, so they exceed 15 as well.
Therefor, ALL 130+ CDs I've gotten in the last twelve months count as part of my collection.NP: Just Cause, JNH ***½

I DO listen to my CDs. I've found that to be increasingly difficult recently, that's why I'm trying to cut back, too.Joan, you never fail to make me laugh!
Anyway, we wouldn't discuss these matters in front of our Mommy, would we? Also, as far as I am concerned, I fear Thor is read when he mentioned film music being a reparation for girlfriends...

I use a simple method to determine whether I should get a score.Do I think it will be available 2 or 3 years from now?
The answer is almost always NO. I don't think it will be available. If I want it, I will have to get it now. Does anybody really think that all those Marco Polo scores will still be available three years from now.
As to whether I enjoy them, I sure thought I did. I didn't realize that there was only one way to listen to scores. After all, I listen to them in the movie, a couple of times when I get them and then when the mood strikes me.
I am sorry if my conspicous consumtion bothers some. I'll try to be more conservative and only buy 1 score a month.
(Oh wait, that's my good twin. I thought I locked him up! I will acquire whatever score strikes my fancy at whatever rate I deem appropriate for me. And thus my evil soundtrack empire will grow and grow until all are assimilated into the collective.)

The answer is almost always NO...Well, oddly enough, I find that about half the scores I bought two years ago are still around and quite prolific. On the other hand, stuff like the Amanda promo, the U-571 promo, and the assorted Prometheus Club releases almost always vanishes quickly. The Inspector Gadget promo I picked up a while back is now selling for more than twice it's original price at the places that still have it.
NP: Works: II, Hisaishi - We're off to a good start with the first two tracks being from Princess Mononoke. The proformance here is better than the OST, and probably on par with the Symphony Album. I'm eagerly awaiting the next tracks. (Incidentally, the CD cover art is very nice. "Works II" is spelled out in shells, leaves, stones, starfish, etc.)

I suspect, there are a lot of us film music junkies. Probably would be more, if money was not a problem.

Of course we do! We just don't get to listen to it often!

Seriously though, biased as I am, I don't see how buying a lot, would mean one does not appreciate the music. Sure, in most cases we can not get as many listens out of it, than we would otherwise. However, that does not detract from the emotional response and enjoyment, one gets from the music.
IMO, if someone can spend lots of money on something they like, more power to them. In my case, I just get quite a bit of free CD' and lower priced ones. Fortunately, I can give enough attention to each score I listen to. Which is good enough for me.

I am only in the 100's. Unlike some, I am very careful as to what I purchase. I am the type who wants to hear the score before I buy it and I don't just buy a new score because it just comes out or because of the name of the composer! If you check out the list of scores I have you will mostly see ***, ****, & ***** ratings (this is the range I like). Also, I live in wonderful Canada where the average film score CD costs $25-$30 and though I am not cheap it is rather ridiculous.-Racerprose
