went to see Vertical Limit this afternoon, cuz I had nothing better to do.serviceable movie, with a serviceable score.
I thought it one of the weaker JNH scores of the last 2 years, being just a notch above Stir of Echoes and Mumford, in my humble opinon.
It just sounds like something Goldsmith would write on a very bad day, rather than something JNH on a great day would do.
It lacks a good, strong theme to tie it all together. I really kept wanting to hear something along the lines of Total Recall while watching the action sequences, of which there are many.
but hey, it was good to see the doc from DS9 on the big screen. (I also kept wishing Robin Tunney would just blink once, she's got that goofy stare).BTW -
The movie also had the trailer for Finding Forrester attached. looks goodposted 12-08-2000 02:37 PM PT (US)

Finding Forrester looks MOST excellent. Sean Connery's performance will be stellar, I'm sure.

JJH, you were far too kind to this film- I found it to be horrible! I was really looking forward to this film. I'm a big fan of Stallone's Cliffhanger, I love Campbell's other films (Zorro and Goldeneye), and after Dinosaur and Unbreakable, I hoping for a great new James Newton-Howard score.BUT..this film failed on every level
***Spoilers***
-it was one of the few action films that is actually BORING! No big set pieces, nothing that builds tension. Everything happens suddenly and then cuts away to another boring part.
-why did no one that worked on the film say that the scene where they find the dead frozen wife after 4 years was rediculous? The whole theater started laughing!
-for a movie where a deadline is so important, why does the rescue group take such long breaks? Every other shot they're crying, talking, flying around in copters,or sleeping! Hurry Up! This film had no tension at all!
-nitro blows up in sunlight? and why was nitro on the guys boot? I was so confused!the only good thing: the fact that the babe from Goldeneye (the russian one) is in it...and looks amazing. I love that woman..although I can never remember her name

ps..the trailer for Tomb Raider is cool

BobaMike, you scored a direct hit (or several). I was thinking all those same things.
Although I'm no huge fan of the first Mummy the trailer for The Mummy Returns looks like a gigantic scoring opportunity for Silvestri. I do wish Jerry Goldsmith were doing this one but, well, he had such a bad time on the first one and he knows better. Pity. But still, I really liked what Alan did for Judge Dredd in Goldsmith's absense so this should be good too.

I went into the film with very low expectations, thus I was satisfied by it. I think the score will be a good listen apart from the film...I look forward to buying it.

I went to see Vertical Limit because my wife is a Nicholas Lea fan.
I had no intention of seeing this one, but then I love my wife...I loved this movie!
The plot is totally preposterous, the script is thoroughly pedestrian, the characters are chestnuts as old as sin, absolutely. In spite of all those strikes, the movie scores hits by being tautly directed, well acted and beautifully scored. The climbing scenes had me on the edge of my seat. Chris O'Donnell and Robin Tunney are very engaging actors, and I was swept away with their performances even in spite of the silly dialogue.
When they got to the part with the nitroglycerine, I thought, "All we need now is Wile E. Coyote!" But even still, I was wonderfully entertained. The location cinematography is breathtaking, and I loved James Newton Howard's (underdeveloped...I'll give you that, JJH) score. I like the main theme very much. It somewhat reminded me of Goldsmith's sweeping theme from The Edge.
Sure, it's a stupid movie...I loved it anyway![Message edited by Chris Kinsinger on 12-09-2000]
