I was reading over at http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/ and according to them, Elliot Goldenthal has landed the job of scoring the upcoming CG animated feature FINAL FANTASY. Now being somewhat new to film scores, I'm not too familier with the works of Elliot Goldenthal and to be honest am somewhat dissapointed that Nobuo Uematsu who has scored the 9 video games didn't get scoring duties on this one. Could anyone fill me in on Elliot Goldenthal? and can he put together a memorable sci-fi score?

Goldenthal is a fine composer...if not eccentric in his style (which I have no problem with) The only sci-fi score (that I know of) that he has done is Alien 3--not your standard sci-fi score to be sure. But given the look and subject matter of Final Fantasy I think he'll do a fine job.

Oh my... lol. I know someone who's gonna be REALLY unhappy! Goldenthal is DEFINITELY NOT Uematsu... lol. I can't stop laughing. Kyp, perhaps this'll be the score that will get you into Goldenthal's work. Or maybe it'll be the one that will cause you to dislike his music even more!

I'm not quite sure what to think of this, myself... but for some reason, I kind of figured it would happen this way. Goldenthal's style is just abstract enough to fit this FF tale like a glove (from what I've seen in the trailers). Interesting...

    GOLDENTHAL?!

    WOW. THANK YOU!

    This is guh-reat news.

This movie may be even better than I thought, seeing as the filmmakers are smart enough to get Elliot G.

If you've seen the trailer, you know that he has some very surreal visions to deliver inspiration.

Who knows what he'll come up with.

    Bring it on.

Well after posting this today I decided to go out and get 'educated' I bought Titus and Interview with a Vampire. Being a fan of the music from the FF series of videogames there still is a dissapointment there about Nobuo Uematsu not composing the music for this movie(if anyone has heard Liberi Fatali you know what I mean )

But I have to say that I'm pretty impressed of what little Goldenthal work I've heard. The first and Finale tracks from Titus are AMAZING! I love the pounding percussion, huge brass hits and my god a mail choir in that first track. As for Interview with a Vampire--I love this sucker Libera Me, Born into Darkness and it's reprise are all great tracks. As much as I'm dissapointed about Uematsu not being able to step into this one, it seems like a solid move on the part of Sakaguchi bringing in Goldenthal. Either way bring in 2001 baby!!

    Drix,

The reason why Nobuo Uematsu is not composing the music for the film is because he dosen't like doing scores for movies.

Uematsu not doing film scores sounds logical, but what press release or fact book did you read that in, Kyp? I'm curious...

As logical as it sounds the potential is definitly there. Pieces like Liberi Fatali, the last 6 minutes or so of the FFVIII Ending theme and The Main Theme of FFVII(Orchestrated) actually sound ALOT better then some movie scores. My dissapointment really seems to stem that this score could have made people sit up and take notice of this 'video game' composer.

This is indeed a big surprise to me. But, I am ecstatic over this news. Goldenthal is one of my favorite composers and I think he will compose another awesome score. He is one of the only few film composers that is not afraid to venture into the art music and avant garde arena.

This is awesome news! By the way, you have not heard his concert works, by all means, GO GET THEM!

But anyway, I personally know the good Doc has never been involved in psychology on a certified level. I never saw those kinds of diplomas. Uhh, Toons, a.k.a. Doctor Mumford, if you will.

    okay, back on topic:

Nobuo Uematsu has written some fine stuff for a viedogame.

    but let's face it:
obvioualy the producers of the film want it ot be somewhat forward thinking, and Goldenthal's music is perfect for just that.
he's at the forefront of classical and film scoring when it comse to pushing the compositional envelope.

for me, Liberi Fatali is impressive, but pales in comparison to, say, the opening of Goldenthal's Titus.

I think this is really excellent news. Goldenthal is far from being the most obvious choice for this film, but good grief, I can just see it working. It's great to see a bit of invention when choosing a composer for a project. I'm quite looking forward to this now...
